Appearance:

Standing at a modest three-feet and ten-inches, Boldwin is just a tad shorter than the average dwarf; a fact that irks him to no end. Though short, he is in remarkable physical shape, having a barrel-chested physique. Both of his arms are covered in solid muscle, as well as dozens of faded scars, ranging from bite marks to old stab wounds. His hands are callused from years of fighting and hard work, particularly his scarred knuckles. Boldwin’s face is not a pretty sight – having it smashed in numerous times has not helped. His nose is crooked and his lip is partially torn at one end, having failed to heal over completely. He has a wild mane of brown hair, as well as a beard that is by contrast usually well-trimmed.

Boldwin typically wears a simple outfit consisting of a short-sleeved shirt and loose pants, both colored in earthy tones. He does not usually wear shoes, instead tying bandages around his feet; they have grown hard and callused as a result. When serving on ships as a sailor, he wears an armored coat for protection, particularly since it can be removed quickly. At such times he also carries a sword at his belt, though he almost never uses it. (Some have joked that it is rusted in its sheath.)

Background/Personality:

Boldwin never learned exactly how his father had gotten exiled from his birth land – the one time he ever bothered to ask him, he was given a black eye. With no real grasp of his dwarven heritage, the Shackles were all he ever came to know. That was just as well, for the dangers that his neighborhood posed were well-suited for him. Perhaps taking after his father, Boldwin the Second was hardheaded and reckless to a fault, often winding up in fistfights with other children. Fortunately, he was also rather resilient, so he never got off with anything worse than a broken nose. As he got older, he learned to better choose his battles, though the introduction of alcohol into his lifestyle often befuddled his common sense. Brawls eventually became more of a pastime than a fight for survival; Boldwin got into the habit of buying his opponents a drink when everything was said and done (after they regained consciousness, of course). Boldwin’s reputation as a ruffian was rather useful when it came to finding work – plenty of captains had room for another hard-as-nails sailor. However, the majority of them were shrewd enough to not keep the dwarf on board for too long, knowing how volatile he could be. Nonetheless, combined with the pittance of an inheritance his father left him, his earnings were sufficient to support his day to day life. A life that he often spent at the Formidably Maid, where he often laughed and fought (and probably made his ancestors proud).

On one such day, a drunken sailor somehow managed to badmouth Boldwin’s height, mother, and intestinal fortitude, all in the same sentence. Naturally, a massive bar brawl ensued. As usual, the dwarf did an excellent job of pounding the sailor’s face in, intending to buy him a drink afterward. However, the fight soon escalated when a number of patrons interfered, proceeding to gang up on him. There was no room for rules in a bar fight, but this struck even Boldwin as being rather low. It was not as though he could afford to buy all of them drinks. He put up a good fight, but already a little worse for wear from drink and fight, it was not long before he was left drooling on the hard wood floor, battered and bruised.

Hit Point Calculations:

1 - 1d10 (Max) + 2 (Con bonus) + 1 (FC bonus) + 3 (Toughness) = 16
2 - 16 + 1d10 (Half) + 2 (Con bonus) + 1 (FC bonus) = 24
