FLAW:
Samara has two flaws. First, she is prideful to the point of stubbornness. She spent five years as an anchoress because she was unwilling to say what her sheik wanted to hear. When she’s right, she doesn’t like bending. She is also proud of her people and traditions… so slights to the Bedine will get her hackles up. Second, she has lived in a small tribe or by herself for her entire life. So, crowds make her uneasy. I wouldn’t call it a phobia but if she were in a crowded tavern, she would grow increasingly uncomfortable until she was compelled to get outside and away from any crowds for awhile. If those aren’t suitably heroic flaws, I’m happy to work with you to create some. Appearance:
Female Human (Bedine) Age: 22 (Adult), 5'7", 140 lbs Samara is a pretty and slender – almost wiry – tanned and olive-skinned, Bedine woman. She wears the sand-colored abaya (loose robe) and hijab (hood-scarf) of her people beneath a brown bisht (outer cloak). As the traditional, face-covering burka is off-putting to the people of the Heartlands, Samara has adopted the use of a sheer black khimar (veil), to maintain her privacy while still allowing others to see her face. Below her coal black eyes, Samara has a line of tattoos across her cheekbones. Despite it being largely hidden beneath her hijab, her lustrous mane of wavy black hair stretches halfway down her back and is a point of pride. Her gear is minimal. When she isn’t wearing her finely crafted backpack, all Samara’s equipment hangs from a dual set of worn leather belts around her waist, below her bisht. There are bespoke holders for a folded sansetsukon and a scroll case, along with a spell component pouch and a belt pouch. When her traditional waveblade isn’t concealed in it’s wrist sheath, it can be seen tucked into the front of her belt. Personality & Motivations:
Samara is a product of the harsh environment she comes from. She is tough, physically and mentally. She is level-headed and neither sentimental nor particularly emotional. She doesn’t waste time on should be’s. She accepts situations and the world as they are, then plots a course of action based on that. She sees crying over spilt milk as a pointless effort that wastes energy. She is capable of pragmatic and ruthless decisions, when necessary. In those moments, Samara considers herself something of a scorpion. However, she is not unkind or exploitative. Like all Bedine, Samara is generous to those who need hospitality. She has a sizeable good streak and generally tries to do the right thing, even at great risk to herself. She believes this impulse is a result of the dragon’s blood in her veins. She is motivated to learn more magic and learn more about the world. Also, she is cautiously moving toward making friends and gathering allies that could help the Bedine in the future. The fate of her tribe (and the Bedine in general) is a frequent worry of hers. While she is trying to adapt to the culture she finds herself in, her Bedine beliefs are very strong in her. The more casual expressions of affection in the eastern lands bother her. And gods help the person who thinks they have a right to remove her veil, touch her face, or put a hand on her in a more intimate fashion without her express permission! History (apologies if this is too detailed):
Samara was born to the Bedine somewhere between The Saiyaddar and The Sword in the burning sands of southern Anauroch. Her tribe wasn’t particularly large or prosperous but no one went hungry. Her childhood and adolescent years were much like any other child’s among the nomadic Bedine… though the tribe watched her closely. It was known that a dragon had entered their family line in the distant past and every few generations a child was born with unnatural talents. While such children weren’t ostracized, they were a source of concern for the superstitious Bedine. It didn’t help that Samara displayed the truth of her blood (Bloodline: Draconic, Trait: Blood of Dragons) while she was quite young. Compounding the problem and increasing the sheik’s suspicions, Samara’s parents tried – and failed – to conceal the fact that genies of fire and sand showed an interest in the young girl as well (Trait: Magical Knack). Things changed suddenly in her teenage years when Samara’s gifts manifested fully (Class: Sorcerer, Feat: Fortune Teller). In general, the Bedine – and the sheik in particular – were suspicious of non-godly magic so her skills were greeted with great consternation. When she predicted and publicly stated that many Bedine would fall into a long darkness, subjugated by a foreign oppressor, it was too much for the sheik to tolerate. He believed Samara was under the sway of evil djinn who fed her these lies. She would have to ‘stand apart’ from the tribe until she was able to dispel the djinn and separate the truth from the lies. It was decided that she needed a solitary period of holy reflection where the gods would, or would not, show her the truth. Samara was 16. Samara was bitter about this turn of fate. She had spoken a truth that both pyromancy and geomancy had revealed to her. There were no nefarious djinn. As she climbed the Scimitar Spires looking for a cave that would serve as home to the newly minted anchoress, Samara wondered if Elah would change her mind or the sheik’s… It turned out, the goddess would do neither. From her perch on the mountain, Samara watched the various Bedine tribes, including her own, migrate through the area on their yearly cycles. When her tribe was close, her parents or a friend would sneak up the mountain to visit her - bringing gifts of food and tribal gossip. Aside from these visitors, her only companions were the genies, the desert creatures that shared the mountain with her, or the predators (two-legged and four-legged) that tried to kill her. In the five years that followed, watching the world from her cave, Samara learned much and changed much. She was toughened by the desert, abraded by its constant dangers. She learned to fight under the tutelage of her genie mentors paired with the examples of the desert creatures (Class: Scaled Fist uMonk). She practiced magic without restraint. She meditated. She studied the epic tales, reading and re-reading the one book she had. But, more than almost anything, Samara practiced divination. And the answer was always the same – the Bedine would be brought to heel and that tragedy would last for many years. And so it was, in 1372 DR, on the heights of the Scimitar Spires, that Samara saw a great shadow move across the desert. Thultanthar, the floating City of Shade, bastion of the ancient Netherese Empire, had emerged from the Plane of Shadow to reclaim and reshape Anauroch. Samara grabbed her few belongings and ran. She warned the tribes she crossed as she fled down the mountains and across the desert. The tribes chose to head north or west, deeper into the desert, to isolate as their people had always done. The fire had shown Samara this tactic wouldn’t work. She kept moving east, out of the desert, into the softer Heartlands… where there were more people, more warriors, and more spellcasters who might have the power to fight the Netherese. The weapons of the Bedine weren’t enough to fight wizards that could move an entire city. Magic was needed to counter magic. From 1372 into the spring of 1373, Samara wandered throughout the Heartlands learning more magic, absorbing (and trying to adjust to) local customs, and trying to learn more about the Netherese. She had only the kernel of a plan, to befriend powerful people and organizations that might be willing to help the Bedine or oppose the Netherese (Trait: Friend in Every Town). If the fire spoke true, her efforts would be largely in vain… or at least they wouldn’t bear fruit until many years later. But, given the choice of doing nothing or doing something, she chose the latter. Allies & Associations:
