Background
Born to a middle class family with high aspirations, Sal's future as a doctor was all but a foregone conclusion to his parents. With little personal motivation beyond his own thirst for learning and love of puzzles, his parents ideals won through despite their strained relationships.
His father was a pushy, often drunk owner of a construction company, who worked 'long nights' (a euphemism for barhopping with his employees, and an older Sal suspects liaisons with mistresses) and, though never physically violent, was often surly and outright mean to his family. His mother was a demure, often sickly housewife who would never stand up to her husband. As an only child, his family interactions colored his perception of people as either liars or people too weak to accept reality.
His school life taught him little else, his intellectual pursuits and already negative, condescending demeanor perhaps making the prophecy self-fulfilling. Even in med school it continued, and he only made a very small suite of friends throughout his life that act more as his caretakers than his companions.
He currently works as a general practitioner in a small hospital in Massachusetts, trying to keep his abrasive personality and tendency to shirk responsibility under control long enough to hold down a job.
His best friend, Owen Phillips, a psychiatrist by profession, has convinced Sal to accompany him on a trip to a psychiatric convalescent home in South Maine.
Personality
Sal enjoys intellectual puzzles, the pursuit of knowledge, and prizes rational thought. Everything else is irrelevant at best and foolishness at worst. Though not truly an introvert, he enjoys being alone.
He is condescending and abrasive, though not actually arrogant - he sees all human beings, including himself, in the same (largely negative) light. He is sarcastic, rude, and sees little point in normal social mores.
In a word, curmudgeon.
