Five Things About Rurisa:

1) She is the daughter of two ex-soldiers of the Chelish army who retired to Longacre; she had an older brother who chose the soldiering life, but he was killed in Isger three years ago by Milil-worshipping "freedom fighters". Unlike some of the retirees of Longacre, her parents remain loyal to the House of Thrune and raised children to value hierarchy and the concept of "peace through strength". She still has a much younger sister, only twelve.

2) She was originally apprenticed to one of the local smiths, and while she liked the work she grew restless at every rumor or report of banditry, monsters, and unrest and chafed at her inability to do more to further the cause of her country.

3) One day a few recruiters for the Hellrazors came through town--tough, feared enforcers of the House of Thrune, they got their start as a ruthless mercenary company during the Chelish civil war that threw in with now-ruling family, and today act as the muscle for many operations against would-be rebels, agents of rival states, and monstrous raiders like orcs, gnolls, etc. Inspired by their rhetoric of patriotism, and desirous of their social status and power Rurisa immediately signed up.

4) The Hellrazors train their recruits in a grueling six-month process, the conclusion of which is the drink from the Horned Chalice. The dark metal cup is filled with the blood of the bound horned devil Ku'kastraalz, and by drinking of its blood the Hellrazors gain phenomenal powers of both might and magic. The brutal training roots out those without the determination & vicious streak required to take the last necessary step, and those who refuse to drink are arrested and sold into slavery.

5) While not quite what one could call "chivalrous", Rurisa is uninterested in killing civilians or other wasteful behaviors associated with the behavior of "evil". Captured civilians are potential workers and slaves, and there is no challenge or glory in their deaths. By the same token, unnecessarily brutalizing enemies who have surrendered hardens the resolve those who remain, dragging out the conflict and tying up resources that could be used elsewhere. If necessary--for example, to flush out would-be heroes who have gone to ground--she would execute as many civilians as she needed to despite her distaste, but her preference is to seek out worthy enemies and cut them down to prove the superiority of herself, her country, and her god Asmodeus.

Rurisa's Goals:

1) Rurisa wants to command armies--while she doesn't have the background for it and her lack of political influence makes it very unlikely, she's always been charming and good at reading people, and the Hellrazor training including large-unit tactics & campaign strategy as well as small-unit tactics and personal combat. If offered the chance to lead even a small number of forces she would leap at the opportunity.

2) Rurisa is more concerned about internal enemies than external ones. She would like to see the Empire cleansed of monsters, rebels, and other undesirables in preference to battling external enemies--Cheliax must clean its own house before it can realistically look to expand, if that is the will of the Majestrix. If given a choice, she will pursue those she perceives to be "fifth columns" with relentless fury over enemies without like Andoran, Radahoum, or the pirates of the Shackles.

Rurisa's Secrets:

1) Thanks to the infrequent letters she exchanged with her brother, Rurisa is aware that he was strongly influenced by the creed of Iomedae before he died, going so far as to renounce Asmodeus barely more than a week before being killed in an engagement with Milil's agents. Rurisa burned all the letters, and her fierce pride in her brother hides a secret shame that he was, at the end, a traitor in thought if not in deed. To protect her family's reputation with the authorities she has told no one of his doubts, and in her heart she blames Iomedae for sowing the doubts that likely led indirectly to his death. If he'd been less distracted, he might still be alive...

2) Unbeknownst to her--or indeed to anyone outside of the Hellrazors' command staff and very high-ranking members of the Church of Asmodeus & Chelish government--Ku'kastraalz is not bound by the company as a prisoner but in fact its secret master and a loyal servant of Gortholkek. He takes advantage of the Chelish desire to "master" Hell to manipulate these mortals and offers his blood willingly to not only empower them, but to claim their souls for his own.

Friends & Enemies:

Rurisa's most valued people are of course her family: her parents and surviving sibling, for whom there is nothing she would not do.

Rurisa's hero and role model is the dashing Hellrazor Commander Talis Ollaran, whom she openly admires and secretly desires. She strives to emulate his demeanor: charming amongst friends and comrades, a highly competent servant to those above him, coldly unyielding to civilians and other inferiors, and relentless in the pursuit of personal ambition.

While she has never met one (that she knows of) Rurisa hates the followers of Milil with an intense passion, and longs to one day avenge her brother's death at the hands of those professional insurgents.

On a more personal note, the Hellrazors are intense rivals of most of the Hellknight Orders, as the two organizations often fill similar roles in Chelish operations. While coldly professional in their public dealings with Law's most infamous servants, the Hellrazors quietly raise doubts about the Hellknights' loyalty to Thrune, and during her training Rurisa and other recruits brawled with squires of the Order of the Chain.
