The girl found Rukn sobbing in an alley. "Why did you let them do that, kid?" she said. "I've been seeing you around the souk for some time. You are quick and smart, I'm sure you could have run or even set a nasty surprise for them. Why did you let those thugs beat you?" Rukn turned his head to her. He was sitting on the ground, arms around his knees. A tear was running down his cheek. The girl standing beside him was young, but older than him. She had kind features and pointy ears, and seemed to be genuinely worried and curious. "Had I ran, they would've gotten mad at me, and it would've been worse. Whatever I do, if it prevents them from beating me, will only delay the final result. It always happens, because I was born with this green hair." Haleen stared at the kid, carefully chewing his answer. It was not the answer she would have expected from a 10-ish year old. "I'm Haleen." She offered her hand to help him get back on his feet. "What's your name? Where is your family?" "Rukn." The kid accepted her help and used his sleeve to wipe the tear from his face."I have no family now." "Ok, Rukn. If you want to come", she smiled, "I can offer you a warm meal and some goat milk." Rukn thought maybe the day was not as bad as he had thought. He followed Haleen, taking care that she didn't notice the blood on the seat of his pants. Rukn and Bhishma:
"Hey Rukn, how you doing today? Listen, I know someone who you might want to talk to." Rukn looked at the young elf, confused. Haleen had been his friend since that day in the alley, three years ago. Rukn had lost his family to slave traders, and had been abused by some boys, when Haleen offered him help. First, a warm meal, then some shelter. Then she became an older sister, always looking after him. Actually, not only for him - Haleen's house had become a haven for people like Rukn, children who had nowhere and no one to go to. Together, they were a family. To Rukn, anything Haleen said was hundred percent proof, but he wasn't sure what she really meant with that phrase. "May the Dawnflower touch you gently, Haleen" he said with a smile. "What kind of 'someone', and why should I be interested?" A tall man entered the house at that very moment. He was dark skinned and bald, and seemed middle aged. His features, typical from the Vudrani people. All his clothings seemed to belong to a kind of ascetic or monk. He greeted both with his hands palm against palm in front of him. "Namaste, Rukn and Haleen." "Rukn, this is Bhishma. He is a monk from far Jalmeray. He's been living here for some time, and has earned my trust." The monk talked with calm and patience. "Rukn, I am here because I heard from Haleen of your condition. My mission in this life is to find lost Devas, people like you, and assist them. To teach you how to manage in life, and how to avoid the destiny that awaits you if some particular people know of your existance." Haleen spoke in turn. "He wants to be your mentor. He can teach you things, and you'll learn how to shoot a bow, that's what you wanted, right? And, if you go with him, you'll learn how to defend your colleagues... and we'll have room for one more here." Rukn understood. Haleen was procuring him an opportunity, a priceless gift like no other one - the chance to give another kid from the streets, like him, a life. "Alright. I'm going with you." Rukn on his own:
Haleen put a hand on Rukn's shoulder. "What happened?" Rukn turned away from the altar and faced his old friend. "We were at the Sunny Day Oasis - Bhishma was looking for some rare herbs. Three strangers approached us. Bhishma knew, now I know - that's why he sent me to a nearby place to look for some other things." Rukn was struggling to pull the words out of his throat. "Rukn, he saved you." Haleen was always kind. Always knew what to say. Rukn told the rest of the story, how the strangers assaulted Bhishma and killed him, and how he bought time for Rukn to escape. He was too far away to be of any help, but he saw it. The strangers were looking for Rukn. He had to flee, he had to go to somewhere where he could feel safe - what better place than Haleen's? "Rukn... of course you can stay here. This is your home, it will always be." "I promise I'll bring something to help. I'll apply to the militia, or the city guard, I don't know. I don't want to be a beggar." Rukn produced his bow. "This is all that's left of him, a gift he made me when I turned 18. He's taught me how to use it, and we've travelled all around Katapesh and beyond. He's been a father for me. And yet I couldn't do anything to save him. You've been a sister for me, I promise I won't let you down, Haleen." Rukn kissed her on the forehead while thinking that the next time they'd come for him, he wouldn't let a friend pay his price. Rukn:
Rukn is a bit taller than average, strong built and with sharp facial shapes. Though he had some Garuda features when he was a kid, like green hair or some feathers, he has lost them over time, and now he could pass for one of the exotic and multiethnic inhabitants of Katapesh without a problem - dark skin and black hair and beard. He tends to be polite but frank, and usually straight to the point, unless he wants to teach something, in which case he tries to make the other one think for himself through accurate questions. |
