About Rougar
The village of Kyshkallyk lies on vast grasslands that act as transitionary geography between ancient, untamed jungle and a well traveled sea. On the darkest of nights, the lights of merchant ships can be seen by the villagers. Every so often though, lights are seen coming not from the sea, but from the land.
A minor trade route passes through Kyshkallyk. This road connects two ports that lie on either side of the jungle. In the days when the route was established, sailing took too long and the jungle was dangerous, so the fastest way between the ports was the grassland. The Catfolk of Kyshkallyk have always welcomed visitors warmly and so the village became a stop on the road.
With the influx of visitors, learning came to Kyshkallyk and several schools were established there. Three were the most influential: Wizardry, the Monastic tradition, and the Arts. The leaders of these schools were considered the wisest of the villagers and lead them as their chiefs.
When faster ships began arriving in the area, the land route fell out of favor and Kyshkallyk fell back into isolation, but the schools were not abandoned. The Catfolk are an extremely curious people and diversity of learning was encouraged.
Rougar is the third child of Rouqar and Sheelak. At 20 years, he is tall for his people, just under five and a half feet. He has a coat of yellow-blond fur spotted with brown-black spots and has slit green eyes. While others of the village indulged their curiosity in nature or ranging, ancient texts or artistic expression, Rougar's curiosity led him to study people: their origins and motivations.
Ever since he was young, when rare travelers would come to his village, Rougar would be the first to greet them. He was intensely curious about these strange folk. He rarely understood their ways, only finding a kinship with elves, but found the ways of humans, dwarves, and others fascinating.
He chose to follow the Monastic tradition. He saw this school as the gateway to understanding mind, body, and soul. He felt that understanding these things about himself would give him insight into others, which he saw as his true goal in life.
Upon completion of his training in the school, Rougar decided to leave the village. This was not wholly uncommon for his people, but those who left rarely returned. His friends and family were saddened to see him go, as was Rougar to leave, but they all understood that Rougar was following his own path.
Before leaving the village though, Rougar took a vow. Of all the differences Rougar noticed between his people and outsiders, money and possessions Rougar was most aware of. Travelers often had a great many possessions with them and were often on a quest to gather more. His people had very little in comparison and wanted for very little. He vowed to remain like his people in that fashion. For as long as his lived, he would accumulate very little and would only possess something if it held personal value to him.
So, Rougar left Kyshkallyk on the road he would always greet visitors on wearing a simple robe, carrying some simple items. He walked until he reached a port and from there booked passage to where ever he could go. He would travel from port to port meeting people, some friendly but many not. He took work as he could find it, but would never stay in one place for very long. He did this for many months until he booked passage towards a place that sounded very exotic to him: the Moonshae Isles.
He knew not what would await him, but felt there would be many interesting people to meet there.
