Elon Dewers is a young man who lived his entire life in Kassen and followed his mother into the clergy of Pharasma. As an aspirant to the church he worked preparing bodies for burial and assisting in funerals. His fellow villagers have become accustomed to seeing him in times of loss and most associate the youngster with death and grief. Naturally this made Elon something of a social outcast and, in response, he remained close to his mother and lost himself in the teachings of Pharasma.
Elon only recently completed his entrance into the priesthood and still tends to the village graveyard. Although his faith in the Lady of the Boneyard is unquestionable he still feels that he is missing out on experiencing life. He watched the other youths of the village play together and grow to adulthood from afar. Now he longs for acceptance and the chance to experience life beyond the books and shovel that have been his constant companions.
His mother has been an overbearing presence in Elon's life, especially since his father died three years ago. She is a staid priestess who relishes the role of unappreciated mother would like nothing more than to keep Elon at her side until he buries her. Her only indulgence is performing harrow readings for the villagers with one of her many harrow decks.
Elon would go to great lengths to keep from disappointing his mother but he also wants to assert his independence at the same time. Days ago Elon consulted his own harrow deck and read signs that a life-changing decision must be made soon. An ember from his hearth flew onto his deck and singed it and Elon took this as a sign that there is a challenge of fire in his future.
