About Rondall Cale

Background:
They say Rondall was fathered by a monster and bawled like one when he came out. His mother Shayliss loved him but his conception and birth had causer her much grief. Once a great beauty, and the trophy wife of the rich Sembian financier Maxim Cale, Shayliss’ pampered life was shattered thirty summers ago. She and her chaperone, Maxim’s younger brother Adam, were travelling on a wagon train travelling south towards Tilverton when a warband of orcs boiled out of the Desertsmouth mountains, north of thunder peak. Most of the wagon train was slain or worse and the goods captured. The orcs used Shayliss for sport and she was left for dead, beaten and disfigured. Next morning a patrol of Tormtar travelling the other direction found the wreckage, rescuing Shayliss. Their prayers cleansed her bones and made her whole again, but nothing could cure the deep scars- bite marks covering her face and back. Worse her menses filed to come and with horror she realized she was pregnant. Her husband disowned her, banishing her to live as a spinster in a tiny Deepingdale cottage.

Rondall grew up believing he was a monster and the cause of his mother's suffering, viscerally hating his tainted orcish blood, particularly the strange birthmark on his back. The one that looked like a wolf's head if you squinted hard enough. As a young man he was bullied incessantly by the other children who were scared of his monstrous appearance. Occasionally an ostentatiously rich member of the Cale clan would visit his mother. Rondall was always locked in his room whenever this happened. He glimpsed the silks and the finery his Sembian relatives wore with such casual indifference. He resented the life of ease and comfort that was stolen away by the manner of his birth and swore bloody vengeance on all true orcs that he might find.

Without doubt his life would have followed a dark path if it hadn’t been for Brother Timothy of Ilmater. The friar was well liked in Deepingdale and his open air sermons welcome to all. It started when Brother Timothy intervened while a group of older children were tormenting Rondall. The friar saw them off and took Rondall under his wing teaching him much of the maimed god, and his acceptance of Rondall was a balm for the angry young man. In time Rondall mellowed and found a modicum of peace - he is who he is, and folks are just going to have to accept that. To this day Rondall holds ilmater dearest of all the gods in his heart, even if he makes his obedience to Mystra as all mages do.

As he grew older, Rondall proved to be both clever and charming with a good ear for languages. One fine summer’s day he caught the eye of the elderly but renowned mage Rhauntides when he attempted to copy a cantrip he’d seen the wizard cast to delight the younger children. The cantrip didn’t quite work, but Rhauntides was impressed nonetheless. Soon it was arranged for Rondall to join him in his tower on the outskirts of Highmoon as his apprentice. Rhauntides was an excellent teacher and Rondall learned much of the world from the kindly old man. Of course being resident in Highmoon he couldn’t help but interact with the local moon elves. Many of them shunned him, looking at his mixed heritage with distruct. A few however grew to accept him, no doubt Rhauntides put in a good word. From the elves he learned their language and the region's tumultuous history. Rondall was horrified by the destruction wrought by his orcish forebears and the axes of his lesser educated human ancestors. (No dalesman would put an axe to the trees of Cormanthor - but the Sembians on the other hand…)

Personality:
Think Sherlock holmes with a flame thrower! Rondall is very bright, yet charming. A meticulous planner with an eye for detail who wishes to understand the world around him but fails to understand himself. He’s horrified yet fascinated by his orcish blood. At times he rages against it, yet his orcish blood sings to him when he casts a spell and he never feels more alive than when summoning powerful and destructive forces!

Description:
Rondall has pale greenish skin, with ready smile and more pronounced canine teeth than any full blooded human. Still he has a warm smile and a mellow laugh that puts most folk at ease. Rondall is fairly short, a little over 5'5". While he'll never be an athlete, Rondanll is lean and clean shaven. He usually wears an explorer's hat with a well oiled cloak to keep out the weather.
