The only thing Rodan still remembers about his human mother is that although she was beautiful, she was always bitter about her lot in life. After she was brutally murdered by one of her many clients, despite the nominal 'protection' of her Cerulean Society pimp, Rodan was left orphaned in the slums of Old Korvosa. Initially he was offered 'protection' by Gaedren Lamm, trained as a thief, and forced to line Lamm's pockets with the proceeds of his thefts. The boy proved to have a genius for picking locks and neutralizing mechanical alarms and traps.

While at first the meagre food and shelter offered by Lamm was welcome, as Rodan developed his talents and learned how the criminal underworld of Korvosa worked, he realized that he was being exploited for nothing. When the boy tried to flee, Lamm caught him and tortured him near to death as an object lesson to his other 'little Lamms'. Somehow Rodan not only managed to survive the trauma, but even to thrive afterwards thanks to his elven reflexes and determination never to rely again on the generosity of others, balancing boldness against caution.

By the time he was in his teens, 'Sly' Grynne became known in parts of The Shingles as an expert at picking locks and neutralizing traps, but he always worked alone. Despite several 'invitations' to join some of the Society affiliated gangs, Rodan has somehow managed to fend off any offers without getting a knife in his back, or irrevocably creating any feuds with more powerful criminal personalities. This inexplicable talent for preserving his independence in the stewpot of the Korvosan criminal underworld is largely why he earned the nickname 'Sly'.

Apart from the elven half of his ancestry from which his pointed ears and his lithe reflexes are gained, there is nothing particularly remarkable about Rodan in appearance. He has sandy blonde hair, which he keeps cropped unfashionably short, green eyes and numerous scars on his face and body. Even his demeanor leaves little to comment upon, as the half-elf usually keeps his own counsel, rarely offering comments to others when unnecessary, or engaging in mindless gossip.

What does stand out to an observer is the intensity with which Rodan watches everything and everyone about him, and the way he is always balanced on the balls of his feet, as though he is about to either leap for cover, or draw the wicked looking duelling sword which almost never seems to leave his side. It is the only item he still has that once belonged to his father, whom Rodan never knew, and he had to go to considerable lengths to retrieve it from his mother's former pimp... incidentally, no-one has seen that individual around for quite some time now.
