Friedrich "Berlin Freddy" LausitzBerlin Freddy is a tall, thin human, visible age around the early fifties. With his long gray ponytail and groomed white beard, he looks like a neo-pagan or an aging hippie or an artist. Adding to the initial impression, he's often prone to wearing t-shirt of long-forgotten bands, showing off his tattoo-covered arms.

One would be wrong to dismiss him, however, since the usually good-natured look in his blue eyes can turn cold in a moment, and calculating in the next. He's usually operating from his place, Der Gute Messer, a pseudo-retro bar-restaurant with Flux State and anarchist motifs, popular amongst aging deckers, hackers and wageslaves.

▷ BACKSTORY ▽:

Danyel was born in Puyallup City into a low end wage-slave family. His mother did not survive childbirth leaving him in the care of his bitter father Bayan, who was an employee with Wuxing subsidiary Cartwright Cartage and Freight Inc’s Tahoma office. Bayan had worked as a delivery driver, then latterly as a logistics clerk, after a violent heist attempt left him with physical and psychological injuries that prevented him driving. To cope Bayan leaned heavily on prescription painkillers, then when they were not enough sought the escapism that the street drug Bliss gave him.

As a result the young Danyel became the defacto driver for his addict father, learning to handle the family’s beat up Chrysler-Nissan Jackrabbit through the Barren’s run-down road networks. He showed himself a natural behind the wheel as his father’s addiction led them through the backstreets and dirt tracks of the district’s less savoury locations, rubbing shoulders with the Barren’s equally less savoury denizens.

His hobgoblin spirit - a strange mix of honour and simmering anger meant it did not take long before he drew the attention of criminal gangs. The Creeps particularly saw potential in this angry young ork, and one of their recruiters - Vyatt Guhlka took Danyel under his tattooed wing. The Creeps boasted connections to both the Ork Underground and the Salish Cascade Oak tribe.

With the lure of ¥, tales of the legendary heroes and runners of Ork Underground and teaching of the “true tongue” Or’zet - Vyatt found Danyel a sharp student. As he grew deeper into his teens Danyel reaped the benefits of operating as part of the extended Creep network, earning money on par with his downtrodden parents as part of the network of young bike couriers - "The Little Creeps" who ferryied contraband off-track and under the radar for the gang.

Proud and angry the belligerent teen scorned education and spent his “free” time working on his new ride - a beat up Yamaha Growler bought with his new payroll and scavenging in the local junkyards for choice accessories.

However Vyatt had earned the enmity of the Kenran-kai Yakuza clan, having refused their “invitation” to allow them a slice of the region’s smuggling operations. While angered that a mere “trog” the Kenran-kai began to focus their attention of his youthful “workforce” - seeing them and their family/friends as a way to grant them leverage. Without a force of couriers, the Creeps would have to come to the table…

Many of the youngsters folded, some ran and others - like Danyel tried to fight back. Highly trained and augmented, the Yakuza Kumi-in easily dealt with hobgoblin anger, beating him down and warning him that he would follow their orders from now on, lest his family be graced with terrible misfortune.

The Big House

Completed 8 years total in prison - 3 years for the contraband trafficking, and a further 5 additional years for aggravated assaults committed whilst in custody.

He spent the first two years at McMcMillin Correction Facilities, Puyallup; 1 year in Juvenile Detention wing, then 1 year in Gen-Pop (where we shared a cell with Leviticus Morrone). The old con proved to be a calming influence to the firebrand hob, but when Morrone was released in 2068 things went south for young Danyel. His hobgoblin temper saw him become increasingly violent at perceived slights against his honour and creed. An act of aggravated assault saw him moved to Darrington Correction Facilities in Everett - a maximum security penitentiary.

At Darrington he was convicted of a further two counts of aggravated assault against Yak connected inmates and a guard, and he was moved to a solitary wing where he competed his now 8 year sentence.

Danyel was released 2 years ago aged 21.

Into the Shadows

▷ CAMPAIGN NOTES - SEATTLE (ORK) UNDERGROUND ▽:

For the most part, there’s a guideline for criminals operating in the Underground ... “Take from above, not below.” Ork-on-ork crime is shameful, with theft being seen as particularly bad; every ork knows what it’s like to go to bed hungry, but forcing your kin to suffer that way is just cruel. Violence, by contrast, isn’t as frowned upon, and many disagreements are settled with fisticuffs or wrestling. The loser has to suck it up and shake hands when it’s over, setting the issue aside and keeping the community whole. People on the surface are free game, however, and getting away with crime on the surface is a mark of pride for those born below. Smuggling is the primary “undercrime,” with several pathways from the Cascade Ork to the Underground providing supplies, weapons, and drugs, the latter of which are marked up and passed on to Seattle proper. Unfortunately, there are leaks in every pipeline, and drugs, and to a lesser ex- tent BTLs, continue to be a blight on the community.

The Mafia, the Triads, and the Yakuza have all failed to make headway into the Underground, but the Seoulpa Rings did quite well, bringing badly needed technical knowledge along with an acceptance of goblins. The Skraacha (Or’zet for Scorchers) are by far the largest gang, filling a role akin to an ethnic mafia, pro- viding protection and foot soldiers to defend the community while preying on outsiders. The Bot’Kham are the next-largest, formed more of predators than protectors; they’re the leading edge of resistance to the Seattleites that are invading the new district. Beyond this, there are dozens of small gangs scattered all across under-Seattle.

▷ CAMPAIGN NOTES - THE CREEPS SMUGGLING NETWORK ▽:

The Creeps are one of the main smuggling networks between Seattle and the Salish-Shidhe Council.

It's a loosely associated group of smugglers, including the notorious Bot'Kham gang. The Creeps are a mostly ork group, with strong ties to the Ork Underground in Seattle and the Cascade Ork tribe in the Council lands. They were formerly associated with the now-defunct Black Rains gang.

Origin▸ The Cascade Ork tribe was formed by Orks who separated themselves from their original tribes and formed a new tribe which took elements of every culture and of the growing Ork cultures, thereby creating their own identity. Not only did many orks and trolls from other tribes join the Cascade Orks (who originally recruited heavily from the Awakened within the Cascade Crow), but large numbers of pinkskin orks also joined the tribe.

Legit Economy▸ Several mines are owned and operated by the Cascade Ork tribe. Of all the tribes in the Salish-Shidhe, the Cascade Orks have shown the least amount of concern about the land and therefore have been lax about effluent control and site reclamation. Tungsten and nickel were minded in small amounts in the beginning, but in 2036 they hit it big time when they discovered an extremely large uranium mine. They transport it overland to the Port of Seattle from which it is exported. Another business, legal but unethical is where they produce "art work" using computer-controlled machines and then sell it to the public as "traditional native artwork", complete with "certificates of authenticity" (produced by photocopiers). The tribe is also known to sell or trade for services rendered, honorary tribal membership. Recently the Cascade Orks established a transportation corporation, the Cascade Transit which has a good sized fleet and is earning contracts in the Pueblo Corporate Council.

Shadow Economy▸ Cascade Orks are involved in running drugs and BTL chips to the Seattle sprawl and elsewhere via T-Birds. The tribe has ties to gangs and smugglers, and it supports the smuggling routes with patrol schedules, repair facilities, fuel depots, IFF transponder frequencies, and so on. The Cascade Orks provide the SSC with kickbacks, discounted necessities, and data which results in them being left alone. When it comes to bribery, they see it as a social lubricant.
