Spoiler:
All of that is just a façade, however. As one of the Forlorn, Rix is a deeply melancholy individual. She often falls into deep depressions, and sometimes her risk-taking comes dangerously close to being a death wish, particularly after the disappearance of her sister. At those times, when she feels the touch of death too keenly, she seeks comfort and life in the arms of strangers. She tries not to show this side of herself, however, especially to her shorter-lived companions. Background
Spoiler:
Rix and her twin sister, Diz, grew up on the dirty backstreets of Altus. Orphaned at birth, they spent their first several decades with a foster family, but the two girls soon became too much for the family care for along with their other children, and so Rix and Diz were abandoned again, ending up on the street to fend for themselves. Raised outside of elven society, Rix and Diz became Forlorn elves, always watching people they knew grow old while they remained young children. They joined several street gangs, learning how to survive on the streets with the skills of petty theft and the long con. Always, however, their companions outgrew the two elven girls, moving on to bigger gangs and guilds, or meeting their deaths on the mean streets. In the end, Rix and Diz only had each other, and they developed a closer bond than even that normally held by twins.
Ten years ago, Diz planned a caper with some acquaintances, a scheme that would make them all rich. Rix didn’t like the idea, and didn’t trust Diz’s accomplices, but she was unable to dissuade her sister. Diz left one evening to carry out her heist, and she never returned. To Rix, it was like a blow to her heart. She searched everywhere for her sister, but always came up with nothing. She was able to discover that the gang was not captured or killed by the guards, but both Diz and her accomplices had disappeared without a trace. Rix was left alone. She has never given up her search for her lost sister, though these days it’s more of a passive quest than an active one. She feels strongly in her heart that Diz is still alive somewhere, but sometimes, late at night, she questions her certainty and fears the worst, falling into a black depression that she only surfaces from with great effort. More recently, Rix got involved with a human man named Aramor, a dashing young thief full of swash-and-buckle. He brought Rix out of her depression, sharing with her his love of life, and together Rix and Aramor became partners in crime. Rix began to feel that the wound in her heart left by her missing sister was beginning to heal. Rix was falling in love. After only a few months, however, Aramor seemed to grow bored of Rix. He didn’t break off his relationship with her, but he began openly seeing other human women, with no explanation or apology. Rix felt hurt, betrayed, angry, and sad, and fell once more into depression. She ended the relationship at once, and vowed never to get so close to someone again. She has replaced Aramor’s presence in her life with a series of meaningless relationships in an attempt to get back at him. Deep down, however, she still loves him, though she is seldom willing to admit that to herself, and she hates herself for it. She still sees him from time to time in the city, at taverns or with common acquaintances, and each time she does, a tiny dagger twists deeper into her heart. What Aramor could never tell Rix was that although he loved her, he was afraid of growing old while she remained forever young. Unable to bring himself to break it off with her himself, Aramor instead did everything he could to force Rix to end the relationship. Rix knows nothing of Aramor’s true feelings, and in an attempt to gain distance from her painful past, has joined up with a band of adventurers to become an adventuring rogue. Perhaps in the company of other outcasts in search of glory and wealth, she can finally find the peace that has eluded her for so long. |
