Seeing that there is no arguing with Sigrun, Rhys simply nods. "You should rest," He ventures. "Besides, someone should be here to protect Walthus in case the creature comes back."

Turning to the others, he continues. "I fear where it may go next. I suspect it could take on the appearance of us any of us and return to Sandpoint to wreck havoc. I am not myself a skilled tracker, but between the three of us perhaps we can find the creature before it sows further chaos."

Rhys is glad for the hospitality and that they were not too late to save Walthus, but still he nods distractedly as the others talk of the goblins and eat their sandwiches, clearly troubled by something. "If I may ask," Rhys begins. "The creature that was here, the Ugothol, the Faceless Stalker, is there anything you can tell us about it? How it deceived you, whether it said it wanted anything? It is still out there and I want to ensure that others are on the look out for it. Anything you could tell us about its methods would be helpful."

Unable to get closer to strike at the creature without potentially harming others, Rhys grits his teeth and keeps his sword drawn. "Ugothol!" He shouts. "You are outnumbered and unwelcome. Surrender, and I promise a swift end to your suffering."

As the creature leaps into action, Rhys's heart beats through his chest, the fear and panic bringing him back to the war from so many years ago. Trying to force himself to stay calm, he takes a moment to center himself, and to study the creature, trying to discern what they're up against. He draws his sword and moves closer, preparing to meat death head-on should it come to that.

Tearing his attention away from the bushes, Rhys follows the others across the bridge. "It's fascinating to think of all the creatures that may still live in areas like this, somehow still undiscovered by our respective peoples."

"Stay sharp," Rhys urges the others, particularly Sigrun and Yako, who he fears are more focused on sniping at each other than the tasks at hand. To help stymie any kind of further conflict, he gestures to where he saw the creature. "I saw something over there. It was human-shaped, with pale skin. Perhaps something from a nearby cave." He shakes his head, "Whatever it was, it was larger than us."

Rhys doesn't move forward to be the first to cross the river, thinking it probably not the best time to bring up that he somehow never learned how to swim.

Rhys takes up a position near the center of the group, letting those who are stronger and more fit take point, but not so far back that he doesn't still have good line-of-sight for anything that may be approaching them.

Rhys nods, contemplating the words, but doesn't reply.

Later, with their shopping finished, they begin to head back. "Soggy River monsters and red seagulls, zombies and snakes. I wonder how much is superstition. They aren't unlike the goblins themselves in that way."

"Have you battled with goblins before?"

Rhys nods. "It's an intriguing concept, I must admit." Nibbling on his beard for a moment, he pauses before continuing. "Do you always reincarnate? And how much do you feel like it influences your life now? Are there fears that you feel have carried over?"

Rhys suddenly laughs. "My apologies for all the questions, it has been a long time since I've spoken to someone about such things. With my people, our very long lives can diminish the presence of death, but that's obviously different from knowing we have lived before or will again."

"And I must say, there is an appeal in knowing that you don't remember everything from each life. I've learned that painful memories build up over the years."

After finishing up his own lunch while watching Ameiko's performance, Rhys rises and accompanies Seishin on some afternoon shopping, and learning what they can about the surrounding lands. He was certainly not prepared, nor expecting, that he'd already be off fighting goblins. 'Old habits?' he asked himself, but found he didn't have a good answer.

The journey begins in silence, with Rhys contemplating the decisions that led him here, but between shops, he glances over at the blue man walking alongside him. "You're a samsaran," Rhys broaches, less of a question and more of a statement. "I've heard tale of your kind but must admit I haven't met one before now. The legends say you have multiple lives - tell me, do you remember them?"

The beautiful owner of the inn Ameiko Kaijitsu approaches Rhys Talloran to ask for his order. She is slender, but with well developed curves. Her long black hair has a streak of white, some legacy of the horrors she has faced in her adventuring days but is meticulously cared for and also sports a couple red strings braided in it. Her eyes are slightly slanted, showing her eastern origins and her skin is almost spotless, except for a beauty-mark on her right check.

"Good Morning Rhys. What can I get for you on this beautiful day? Some spicy fish soup, deep fried tempura or perhaps something else?" Ameiko's tone is cheery and bright and her smile is genuine as she looks to take his order.

"I think that Sandru's caravan should arrive in a few days going by their usual schedule. Though with all the rain that has been lately there might have been delays. With the roads drying up quickly in this heat, hopefully they can make good time again."

She waves at Yako as he enters the bar, another smile greeding the tiefling. "Welcome and good morning to you Yako. It's good to see you on such a nice day. I'll be with you shortly, I just need to take the order from Rhys here first." She winks an eye at him before turning her attention back to the elf.

"Ms. Kaijitsu," Rhys greets her warmly with a smile and, without rising from his seat, short bow, bending his torso close to the table. "The fish soup sounds lovely. I haven't been this close to the ocean since... well, let's say long before your parents were born and leave it at that." He chuckles.

At the mention of the caravan's delays, coupled with the discussion of the goblins, Rhys begins to chew on the part of his beard just below his lip, with nervousness. "I do hope they are alright. Especially with this talk of goblins." He says, almost to himself.

Feeling simultaneously too old to get involved and too young to know what else to do, Rhys contemplated his options, which ranged from joining the others, to hiding under the bed, to going back home. But he couldn't ever forgive himself if something happened to Koya, especially after he'd promised her mother he'd watch out for her.

With a smirk she looks towards Rhys. "Are you going to join them as well Rhys? Or will you continue to wait for Sandru's caravan?"

He sighs. "I suppose I might." Rising now, he introduces himself to the others. "Greetings, I am Rhys Talloran, a scholar and inventor. The news of the goblins has me concerned for my friends, who are traveling here by way of caravan. If you are going to venture into the swamps, perhaps I could accompany you?"

Elf Investigator 1 [ HP: 9/9 | AC: 16 | T: 13 | FF: 13 ] [ Fort +1 / Ref +5 / Will +2 | Init +3 / Percept +7 (Low-Light) ]

One Week Ago

Rhys stood in the streets of Sandpoint, uncertain as to how he'd gotten here once again. Three times in a year was something he'd have never anticipated. When he was arriving, he'd thought the town looked charming - quite small and quaint compared to Iadara, where he was born two centuries ago.

But now that he was "in it", he felt overwhelmed. There were so many people moving to and fro, so many sights and sounds. During his first trip out, he had visited only Niska's estate, on the outskirts of the town. On the second, he had only gone to the church for her funeral, and while the town was still bustling, he had dshared a destination with others, and could follow their leads. Now... The streets all felt the same, and hadn't he passed by that same habberdashery twice already?

The only place he'd left his cabin to visit in the last few decades was Ravenmoor, a village whose population could have fit entirely inside the Sandpoint church. The kind of place that only had a single road, and was impossible to become lost in. He hadn't realised how much he appreciated that before now.

During an ensuing panic attack, Rhys was approached by a young Tian woman that had recognised him from the funeral. She invited him to her establishment, brought him water, and chatted with him until he'd calmed down. He explained that he was looking for Koya, and Ameiko said he could wait there.

Now

Now, sitting in the Rusty Dragon, Rhys watched Ameiko run back and forth, keeping herself busy, and smiled, grateful that she'd allowed him to stay. Having a place that he felt safe was more important than he thought it would be. And since Koya's caravan was still a few days out, there was no one in town that he knew. The entire ordeal was so difficult.

He was pleased that there was a decent crowd in the tavern, it was good for him to get the exposure. Over the last few days he'd been trying to get outside more and more, to familiarize himself with the streets, and get used to the crowds. It was getting easier, but that was the thing, he had to keep doing it. It got a little easier each time, but it was yet to be "easy".

The hours after dusk and before dawn were still the most comfortable for him, and last night he'd watched the sunset from the Old Light, pleased that it hadn't seemed to have crumbled any further in the last few decades. "I remember when you were all that was here, old friend." He remarked to the collapsed lighthouse.

Sipping his water, he hoped Koya would arrive soon. There was a sense of foreboding that he couldn't describe, one that had been with him since her mother's last few days. He didn't know what it meant, but he suspected he wouldn't be going back home to his cabin. [i]"Better get used to being out in the world, old man" He admonished himself. "For once, you don't know what's coming."

The idea filled him both with excitement and extreme trepidation.

Rhys nods to Tom. "Alright, I'll help with getting supplies. Get a fire going and we'll find you." Turning towards the Tien man, he continues. "Ishirou, was it? Come along."

Let's have Ishirou act as Scout since he should be more or less able to handle trouble that comes up.

Rhys shakes his head. "We should stay put until we know where we are. Once Master Amberwhinge has an idea to that effect, we can better choose a direction. In the meanwhile, I think you're right about a fire. Perhaps we should salvage what we can from the wreck, while it's still afloat." He pauses, looking at the sky with some concern. "And light out."

Rhys walks up towards the lady and flashes her a mischievous smile. "I am sure, my dear, that with your spirit, they would be truly missing out if they were to not wait until you were awake." He gives a slight bow. "Please excuse them - without knowing what happened, we could not be sure that you had survived. They did mean only to help." He kicks one of the scorpion-creatures. "After all, it was not only us who woke up on this beach."

Rhys narrows his eyes at the creature, and flips open the grimoire to a page he knows well. His fingers move over the page and his lips murmur an ancient incantation in a tongue that is older than most civilizations. As he reaches the final word, he raises up his hand and a black / purple blast fires out of the palm towards the scorpion-creature.

Partial success will be putting myself in a spot. My two tags are Near range, and Forceful - trying to knock it back from Mock.

Rhys looks between his grimoire, the individuals fighting, and the bodies on the shore in danger of being swept away. Grumbling to himself, he leaves the book where it lies, and walks over to the unconscious bodies, dragging them once at a time further up onto the shore. 'One of you had better know what happened.' he thinks to himself.

Rhys pushes the corpse off himself and stands up, looking Mock over. "What's a dangerous girl like you doing in a place like-" Frowning, Rhys's voice stops dead as he realises that he has no idea where they are. His eyes dart around the beach, noting both the lack of wreckage, and the presence of more of the creatures. "Let's continue this later." He remarks, charging once more towards the pile of equipment to grab his grimoire.

Looking up from where he is eating sand, Rhys sees Mock moving in behind the creature and gives the the slightest grin. Knowing how dangerous she can be with a blade, Rhys rolls over and sits up, throwing a bit of sand at the scorpion creature, trying to get it in the eyes. "Right, let's go then."

Defy Danger (Dex): 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 2) + 1 = 6

Jumping up, Rhys begins to charge across the beach, varying as necessary but otherwise heading straight towards his black, leatherbound tome.

Ryuko wrote:
Where did you learn your magic? Is your power something you were born with or something you gained?

A small degree of it came from birth, which would basically be the moves Mage Hand and the Elven Racial. A kind of weak magic sense and the rough ability to move things with thought. Nothing powerful, nothing dangerous, but it's still uncommon and the other Elves still would have been wary. The Dark Magic powers were learned later from a terrible grimoire that I'd have, ah, "liberated" from some deep, condemned archives.

Ryuko wrote:
What use are your arcane tattoos? Focusing agent, power reservoir, mark of respect, or just fashionable?

It's actually a kind of branding - Elves always brand their young with noticeable marks when finding out that they can do magic. It's less a mark of respect, and more a warning. It makes it very clear how they should be deal with if problems with their magic arise...

Ryuko wrote:
What led to your preoccupation with magical secrets?

I think the fact that I could perform magic, though it was little more than small tricks while many others couldn't would have been an interesting thing as a young man. And then having it be this taboo thing on top of that would have made it even more interesting - this kind of sexy and dangerous and unknown thing that people avoid talking about. Likely largely because they're afraid of it.

Ryuko wrote:
How does your power feel to you when it's used?

Intoxicating, but more for what it represents than any feeling inherent to casting itself. It's this feeling of embracing what you are and what you can do, when kicked free of the shackles and limitations that others place on you. It's incredibly freeing.

Ryuko wrote:
Why are you on the Jenivere?[/list]

Hmmm, if I have reason to think there is more magical knowledge hidden there in some ruins, let's go with that. If I don't, then let's say I'm on the run from my family and just jumped on the first ship I saw.

Cool, glad you like him! I'll pop over to discussion in a bit. And yeah, I'm definitely not much for the spell lists aspect. I'm playing a Shaman in my in-person game now (after playing a Thief last game) and I've found that I greatly prefer having abilities to spells.

Also, for both you and anyone else here, Runelords Recruitment is up

Ok, I threw together a class and made an alias. Link to the playbook is in my alias. Let me know if anything should be changed. It's entirely scavenged things from Class Warfare and other playbooks, so I think it might be fine.

Please do. I did expect someone to want to play paladin, so there are a couple things in store to help facilitate that.

Alrighty, here's YoricksRequiem's Paladin/Monk. The backstory and Paladin's code are both VERY rough first drafts. I wanted to at least get down what I had in mind to receive feedback before going too refined with it. Admittedly I spent more time talking about the Tengu as a people than my own character, but there is perhaps enough there to get a basic gist.

I added a (brief) backstory to my profile as well, and would also be interested in playing with 3. We'd be short a Thief type, though. I'd totally be willing to reroll if you wanted a more balanced party, but we'd then lose out on the healing (unless Ray wants to change his Talents, which I don't want to push him into), so it seems like a tradeoff either way.

<3 Ray we can be mage buddies

Thanks! How detailed do you want the backgrounds to be? Do you want everyone to start in the same city?

I think I have my crunch done, unless I did something wrong or missed something. I'm going to work on the backstory some this afternoon.

Intelligence (Cultural Lore) is the other option for Lower Class / Artist, which might make more sense with your suggested background - growing up with reservations about technology, hearing lots of stories, and traveling around for x years?
