Background:
Rheeg was born already an orphan, his parents slain before he had left his egg. Between the time he was laid and born, adventurers had come upon the kobold clan and killed them, hearing of them raiding nearby caravans. However, the unhatched eggs presented a moral quandary to the adventurers. Not willing to kill the unborn kobolds, the adventurers decided to leave the eggs in a nearby orphanage, hopeful the kobolds would not grow into evil creatures like their parents.
Rheeg’s upbringing in the orphanage proved to make a difference, as he learned less of the importance of power than of skill. While he learned a variety of skills from the villagers around the orphanage, he found himself most interested in the mechanics of locks - and began to devote himself to understanding them. It was not uncommon to see him taking apart objects such as door hinges and putting them back together, much to the ire of those around him.
When he reached adulthood, Rheeg decided to open his own locksmith shop, where he could design his own locks and occasionally help the poor sap who had locked himself out of his room or something. Rheeg boasted that he would be willing to travel anywhere to do his job, and did travel some ways outside his home. He grew some amount of fame for his devotion to the job, as well as his reasonable rates even when traveling to far vistas.
His services with Professor Lorrimor started simple at first - the professor, staying at a nearby inn, needed help opening a small box. Rheeg, after about an hour, managed to get it open, to Lorrimor’s great joy. The professor then stopped by more often, asking for something else to be opened. Sometimes it was mundane, such as his room at the inn, but others the professor brought in old safes or trinkets, with seemingly little value. Rheeg never felt he had had much impact on the man, but did find his musings (which he would say while Rheeg worked) interesting, and tended to enjoy his company.
The kobold’s job, whether with the professor or not, grew more bold. The kobold’s skill with hands extended, as he was asked to deal with traps placed by goblins, or doors to old dungeons adventurers wished to explore. Rheeg lost contact with Lorrimor at one point, but Rheeg did not notice, so overwhelmed by jobs and his own tinkering.
Thus, when the letter stating Lorrimor had perished came, Rheeg was more than shocked. The man had been a friend, albeit briefly, but Rheeg had never appreciated him. Packing his tools, as well as buying a bit of equipment, he told a courier to return a message that he would come as soon as he could. As he began to leave, he considered that he had never bothered to understand even one of his customers. With a twinge of regret for what his life could have been, and a pondering of the future, he embarked.
Appearance and Personality:
Rheeg is a gold scaled kobold, making him easily eye-catching. His draconic eyes are enlarged by the spectacles that rest upon his nose. His hands and fingers are constantly moving, usually twirling a lockpick or key between his fingers. His kobold face tends to not be very expressive.
Rheeg is hard-working to the point of stubbornness, along with a knack for tinkering and a furious curiosity. A bit sheltered, he hasn’t seen many monsters, much less fought, and focuses more on his work. In what little free time he has, he enjoys reading books on culture or stories of old. His attempts at social matters feels more a business transaction, which tends to put off those expecting a friendly conversation.
Future Plans:
Mechanics-wise, I think Rheeg will go down the two-weapon fighting line, simply because he needs it to do enough damage to keep up. Hitting will be the most difficult issue, between the TWF penalties and his 3/4 BAB. Weapon Focus will alleviate this somewhat, but overall this will be the hardest part.
Character-wise, I wish for Rheeg to expand more on his connections with others - something he never had time for with his job. In addition, I would like to make the normal cowardly kobold turn brave, as he confronts monsters for the greater good. Perhaps an alignment shift to LG would be in order, but for the current LN works fine.
