A Backstory In Monologue:

”Do you know what the oldest lie in Absalom is? That suffering is aimless.

“That grazed knees, a cracked lip on a poor boy in the Puddles could be anything but meaningless, and not part of the fabric that drives him to greatness. Take a moment and think about this boy’s blood, how his wounds start to knit up almost instantly. See the order in it! Yes, this young boy born to haberdashers in the poorest district of a City at the Center of the World, see him playing with the other children along the schisms and crumbling chasms of the once-grand streets. This boy that looked up at the glittering towers of the other districts and wanted more. And when adventurers wandered through to kill a monster, thwart a cult, or apprehend a bandit lord, how he glared at their glittering weapons, their easy smiles, their confident gates. See the covetousness in his eyes as the bullies descended, their strength on full display as they dragged him across the cobblestones. How common a story! How many adventurers within the Society had similar beatings? Similar misfortunes? Can there be a drive to succeed without evil in the world, without covetousness to drive the people on, to pull the threads of their lives taut and give purpose where there could’ve been none? What is competition but envy pitted against envy? What is righteousness but a different kind of corruption?

“Do you know what the oldest lie in Absalom is? That power is a birthright.”
