Raymond was once a promising young noble of Taldane descent, but after what should have been a fun and adventurous weekend hiking and exploring in the Verduran forest, he found himself beset by vicious, alien creatures. When he awoke, an old crone was standing over him, his left hand tied behind him, his right arm completely limp and useless. Unable to move other than to shout at the crone because of her foul magic, Raymond helplessly watched as the crone performed a strange ritual over his right hand. Sudden, excruciating pain in his right arm sent Raymond into shock, and he passed out.
When he awoke once more, Raymond found himself being dragged through grassy terrin by his own hand. He looked down in horror to see his hand, which had transformed into a red-fleshed monstrosity with claws. He stood, and the hand tried to drag him along anyway, until he secured it with a set of manacles he'd conveniently kept with him.
Raymond drug himself wearily back to town, finally collapsing near his home, and was found by the local apothecary. Over the next few weeks, the apothecary experimented on Raymond's hand, but could find no way to reverse the curse the crone had put on him. Raymond's hand precluded him from his duties as a noble, as noblemen and women found him to be horrifying, so he was forced to resort to odd jobs and simple adventuring.
