Born some twenty six years ago on the thirty-first of Abadius, Raphael Aldric-Helene Montefiore was born into a family on the decline. It was, in fact, a family that was a shadow of its former self. As the grandson of Corentin-Estelle 'the Cretin', his birth was noted by no one of influence or means. Blessed to be born on the final day of the month devoted to Abadar, Raphael's fate seemed doomed to a life of ignominy. As the third son of Aldric and Helene-Gustav Montefiore, there would be little chance for him to distinguish himself. A few short months after his birth, the death of his grandfather -"The Cretin" was the source of much derision in Roland. The coffee shops and gossip houses throughout the city thrummed with rumors and theories about the continued fall of Montefiore. Aldric, Raphael's father, saw the writing on the wall and sold the ancestral Montefiore estate and most of the nigh-worthless assets of the Montefiore Trading Company. With a shell of a company and few assets in hand, Aldric set about creating a better legacy for his children then he himself was given by his father. 'Scraping' by as would a mere merchant, the surviving Montefiore clan lived in a state of 'poverty' that would have been alien to their forebears. Trinkets and heirlooms were sold off, piece by piece, to eager buyers and the proceeds used to see the five children well educated. The only trinket left at the end, was the piece that had earned the family its fortune in the first place. Raphael was given a good education, mostly by Abadaran priests, that has since served him well. Numbers, figures, history, law and more were his and the bright young lad soaked it up. By the time he was eight, he had surpassed his older brothers (eleven and ten) in learning. Raphael showed a unique proclivity for "Manual of City Building" and "Order of Numbers" (holy texts of Abadar) which didn't go unnoticed by his tutors. The Abadaran priests made a point of training the lad in the divine and the proper genuflections required by the Master of the First Vault. As he grew in his teens, he was introduced to the sword and bow, though he favored the bow greatly. Showing skill with as an archer and with the divine, and faced with few other prospects as a third son, Raphael enlisted into Durendal military at age sixteen. He would go on to serve with distinction for five years. He spent the first couple years stationed in a fort guarding the border with Greater Galatine. During this time he improved his shot with a bow against bandits and in a few skirmishes with the forces of Galatine. His intelligence and resourcefulness, not to mention a clever tongue, drew notice from his superiors and they soon had him serving in a more clandestine fashion. As a member of the elite special forces division of the Durendal military, Raphael honed his skills further. He showed a particular knack for covert missions across the border that sought intelligence on the still-mighty armies of Galatine. It was in serving with this unit that he befriended a young woman from a peasant background, Estelle. The bastard daughter of a minor noble and a Calistrian priest (quite the scandal in Roland), Estelle brought a spontaneity to Raphael's life that he'd previously lacked. His three years serving his country, covertly and without a heroes praise, were among the happiest in his memory. Raphael's time in the military taught him a love for his country and it's unique history. He mingled with races he'd never met before, fought as a proud Durendalan and felt a rekindling pride in his family's history as warriors. Feeling a renewed sense of purpose and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, Raphael lived a life with hope in a way he never had before. It was shortly after his promotion that he learned of the death of his father and eldest brother Jean-Marie. An outbreak of the Golden plague (supposed by some to be planted by the Galantines), had claimed two of the men he'd looked up to most. Devastated and torn between his loyalties to family and country, Raphael reluctantly resigned his commission and returned to Roland to aid his now ailing family. Over the next three years, Raphael helped his remaining brother, Arnaud, in managing the Montefiore Trading Company while learning the ins and outs of Durendalan law. These grief-stricken years were difficult for Raphael as he faced long hours work followed by long hours studying. His years in the military left him well prepared for the duty involved but there was little joy. Angry at the fates that had left him in this state, Raphael soldiered on and did his duty. His faith in Abadar and his family's future was his only solace. This changed when his old comrade, Estelle, returned from her military service. Coupled with the end of his training as a lawyer, Raphael's life began to look more promising and he turned his sights higher still. In the intervening two years, Raphael has established himself as a highly skilled attorney-for-higher and merchant. His family's businesses are beginning to show signs of great life and in the midst of it, Arnaud gave to him the Bracelet of Bargaining that was the sole remaining Montefiore heirloom. "My brother, you will be the one to lead our family to glory. I can do only so much with this, but with you, we could be great again." Accepting it and embracing his brother, Raphael has since set about building the legacy that he had longed for. With his brother at his side and Estelle his constant companion, Raphael Aldric-Helene Montefiore is ready to build his destiny.
Appearance:
Standing at five foot 10 inches tall, Raphael Montefiore is a slender man. He lacks his elder brothers' muscular bulk but makes up for it with finesse. He wears his auburn hair in a neatly trimmed ponytail tied off level with his shoulder blades. His chiseled good looks, green eyes and quiet charm have long brought him the attention of would-be suitors. So far he has decline to marry in order to focus on his success. Raphael's sense of fashion has blossomed since his return and, though he may find some of the pomp tiresome, he a notable figure striding the streets of Roland. He to dress in elegant, straightforward finery, but doesn't shy away from more convoluted, lace-covered garments if they are required. His only requirement is that his garb allows him to carry a brace of daggers secreted about his person. Old habits die hard for a military man.
Personality:
There is a glint to Raphael Montefiore's eye that can be a little unsettling. A precocious child, Raphael demonstrated from an early age that he was more perceptive then most. A product of his upbringing and time in the military, he has grown into a quiet and reserved man. When he chooses to speak, he speaks elegantly and compassionately. His precisely chosen words enthrall those around him and it's a rare day when he can't bend another to his whim give the time. His wit, generally dry, can be biting at times. Raphael is, and always has been, ambitious. This thirst for more then the hand he was dealt in life has led through hardships and periods of great difficulty. He possesses an intense love for his country and an equally intense distaste for Greater Galatine. His love for Durendal is second only to his love for his family and its legacy. Raphael is slow to anger, but when his passion is roused he is not easily calmed again (much less when family or country are involved).
Motivations:
He wants to see Durendal's star on the ascendant. He's fiercely nationalistic and would put all his resources against anything that could harm his beloved nation. He would like to see his family name restored to its former glory and rightful place as a leader of Durendal. He desires a seat on the Durendal Council so that he can help direct the nation towards its due glory. He would like to recover as many Montefiore family heirlooms as possible. He wants to see the power and influence of the Abadaran church grow as he sees it as a civilizing influence. He doesn't mind any groups calling for increased rights for citizens and could champion it.
The Montefiore family and its history:
In distant history, Raphael Montefiore's family gained its noble status at the end of a sword. It fought with brilliant honor through the wars against Galantine and its name still has respect in military circles. It managed to grow into a moderately powerful house, but one without great wealth. The family did, however, form a close and personal bond with the church of Abadar. The church's call for Durendalan unity and civilization struck true with the fiercely proud Montefiore's. The rise of the Montefiore fortune would come many years later with Raphael's great-great-great-great-grandfather. This man, with the aid of a trinket made by a High Priest of Abadar with family ties, built a trade empire centered in the capitol. From the finest luxury silks to lumber from Flamberge. This trading empire, Montefiore Trading Company, was maintained with ruthless efficiency and verve. Raphael's grandfather, Corentin-Estelle, lost the vast majority of the family's over the years after he took control. The Montefiore name was greatly tarnished in the eyes of the nobility and Corentin-Estelle earned the mocking title "the Cretin". During these dark days, the family lived in near destitution in its estates in the countryside until the Cretin passed. Raphael's father, Aldric -seeing the idiocy of holding to an estate that had long since become a burden- sold the family's estate and moved the entire clan into the city. The proceeds from the sale of former palatial estate went towards a new home and opportunities. The now-pitiable Montefiore Trading Company, a shadow of its former self, still exists and maintains a modest living for the family. A smart man in a horrid situation, Aldric recognized that his children would need to rebuild the family name. Thus, he saw to fine Abadaran education for all of his children: Raphael, his elder brothers (Jean-Marie and Arnaud) and sisters (Emilie-Gilbert and Aimee).
Contact: Estelle:
Estelle Stingborn was born roughly twenty four years ago to a Calistrian priest and a minor noble lady. Left after her birth to the Calistrian temple to raise, Estelle's life has been less then ideal to date. Raised in sect that is tolerated (and nominally disdained) by mainstream Durendalans and born with the hated blond hair, Estelle was forced to learn to fend for herself and to shrug off the insults thrown her way. When she came of age, she left her life at the temple and enrolled in the Durendalan military where she would eventually meet Raphael Montefiore. The two met when Raphael overheard Estelle speaking to a companion about her past. Raphael, naively, made a joke about her Stingborn name and was wrestled to the ground for his trouble. His arm twisted agonizingly behind his back and his face stuck in the less then sanitary ground of a military fort, Raphael begged the young woman's forgiveness and, with some time, managed to win his freedom. Over the following week, Raphael continued to apologize every time he saw the young lady. Over the course of few more scuffles (and corresponding time spent on latrine duty), the pair built a rapport that would eventually blossom into friendship. They often served together on missions into Greater Galantine and their friendship has exposed both to the radically different lives lived by Durendal's citizens. After Raphael left military service, Estelle continued to serve for a couple of years before being discharged with honors. Returning to her native Roland, Estelle found herself out of work. By chance, she happened to meet with Raphael in the street and the lawyer was shocked to hear of her situation. By pulling a few strings, Raphael was able to introduce her to the Captain of the Guard who'd he'd met during his work as an attorney. Seeing the merit of a woman with her experience, the Captain was quick to hire as into the Guard where she has since put her skills as a soldier and daughter of Roland's streets to use. Raphael and Estelle have kept a close relationship since as both friends and professionals.
Prized Possessions:
The Bracelet of Bargaining that belonged to his great-great-great-great-grandfather. This was the only Montefiore trinket not sold off by Raphael's father. A masterwork dagger that belonged to the same man as his bracelet. This lovingly crafted dagger bears the Montefiore crest ingraved into the blade. It's ornate hilt ends in an ornate black-enameled gold-trimmed pommel shaped like the Montefiore lion. The blade, while showy, is still wickedly sharp. Raphael purchased the blade back for his family from its previous buyer. He is rarely parted from it. An Ioun stone that belonged to the man who founded the family. Over the years, the brilliant magenta prism stone has been damaged and it is now slightly dulled and with a crack formed along its length. It, along with the dagger and bracelet, are the only heirlooms that Raphael possesses. A golden holy symbol that was supposedly used by an Abadaran priest married into the Montefiore clan. It was gifted to him by the Archbanker of Roland on his return for his father's funeral. It's expected that it will be returned to the church when he dies.
