Traits: Hedge Magician, Noble Born: Garess
Randragoran always seemed distracted as a kid. His mind never seemed to be where his body was. Maybe that was because his father ran the local library, and so Rand (as people would call him) was always buried in books. His mother died when he was a baby, he never got to know her. His father had to raise him, and that involved Rand sitting in the library most his days.
Rand’s family has had a long association with the dwarves of the Golushkin Mountains. His family’s library had the most extensive research on engineering and stonework in Brevoy, thus it was of interest to the dwarves. Through the years, the research has grown with collaboration with the dwarves, as well as friendship.
When Rand’s father discovered that Rand was interested in magic, he decided to send him off to the Arcanamirium in Absalon. He went with his lifelong friend, Roshgar (a dwarf) who specialized into devoloping new types of spells. Rand had a wonderful time there. He finally felt like this was where he belonged. Though he fit in with the dwarves, other than Roshgar, he never really felt a connection with them. Rand found a fascination with crafting. He spent a lot of time creating magical items, and spent even more time learning how to make them. However his stay was cut short. 3 years in, his father passed away. Rand returned home, and took up the family business of running the library.
When he took over the library, he spent many a time going to the dwarven lands, and learning much about them and where they lived. He grew to admire mountains and decided to take his life’s motto to be “Strong as the Mountains.”
It was at this time that something strange happened to Rand. His body seemed to be aging, though he was still young. At the age of 27 he looked like a 50 year old man, his skin becoming wrinkled, having somewhat of a bird like face, and grey hair. He sports a long grey beard, reaching down to his belt, which is his most valuable possession next to his staff.
Despite all his research, Rand could find nothing to explain why he seemed to be prematurely aging. He wondered if maybe it was because all he did was read. He started to look for ways to go out and do something, that maybe he needed a good purpose in his life, so he decided to spend more time with the dwarves. He ended up handing the library over to another old man “He’s a good rambler, he’ll make a good librarian”.
During his time with the dwarves, he ended up meeting an old dwarf by the name of Gimgi. Gimgi was blind from old age, but this didn’t stop him from living his life. Rand looked up to him, that his age didn’t stop him, since Rand was afraid of that very thing. In telling him about his family, he mentioned that his mom had passed away and that he never knew anything about her. Gimgi said “So you never knew she was of house Garess? Why do you think your family has such close ties with us?”
This sent a bolt through Rands life. He began researching house Garess and found that indeed, his mother had been of that house. When we went back to talk to Gimgi, to find out more about his mother, Gimgi had passed away. In his death, Gimgi had left him two things. A charter to the Stolen Lands, and a note “Find who you are”.
