About Raj Ajir
Raj grew up in the village of Kelmarane, raised by both of his parents. His father would often tell him stories of the great battles of old between the genies, romantic tales of djinn falling in love with mortal sorcerers, daring escapades of cunning jann eluding the powerful efreet, and all manner of fantastical tales. His favorite story though, was the one his father said was about his ancestors.
In the story, there was a powerful wizard who led the genies into battle, and was celebrated continually for his aid in the war. He commanded many genies, binding them with his magical power, and directing them in battle. But not all the genies were happy about a human wizard meddling in their business and trying to control them. One day, a group of efreet snuck, into the city of the djinn as the wizard was sleeping, and cast him out of the elemental planes, using powerful magics to prevent him from returning, and carefully guarding all portals and gates he tried to use. But he had a djinn lover.
The poor lovestruck genie was heartbroken when her love was taken from her, and she decided to go live down on earth with him. They survived countless assaults from the relentless efreet, but eventually managed to hide in a city near Kelmarane, and as the years past, they worked their way to where present day Kelmarane is. These, Raj's father told him, were his ancestors, and he was the heir. It very much inflated his head, but he didn't care much.
His parents were taken quite suddenly from him though, when a gnoll attack decimated the town. Fortunately, Raj was playing a mile or so away, but his family had been killed. Turns out he didn't escape unscathed either; as he was turning away from his ruined home, a particularly gnarly old gnoll found him. He couldn't decide whether it would be better to sell him and buy food or just eat him on the spot, but eventually he decided on the latter. Just as the gnoll was getting ready to sink his teeth Raj, an arrow struck the gnoll in the back, killing him. Though Raj didn't know it, his saviour was a Janni who was sympathetic to Raj's family.
Raj wandered for a bit, but eventually wound up in a port city. After spending a few years working odd jobs, he heard about a wizard school in Absalom that was accepting students for extremely low prices. Remembering the stories of his youth, he journeyed to Absalom and enrolled. Compared to other institutes of magic, this wizard school was terrible, but it opened up a whole new world for Raj. He worked hard, developing a knack for summoning and teleportation. It was during these years that he first came into contact with the pathfinder society.
Though in hindsight Raj is grateful for the incident, he never wishes to repeat it. It happened when he summoned his familiar, Nemaides. Nemaides had just appeared When Raj's roommate walked in the door late at night, drunk as a skunk, and singing bawdy bar songs at the top of his lungs. Nemaides found the sound so annoying, he decided to take it out on the entire city. To this day, Raj is amazed at the sheer volume of mischief a single raven can cause in a city. When he finally got Nemaides under control, who was by now also singing the bawdy bar songs to annoy other people, it was right in front of a venture captain's house, the front of which looked like someone had take rabid cats and dive bombed them into the walls.
This was surprisingly close to the truth.
The venture captain decided to cut a deal; if Raj joined the Pathfinder society; he didn't have to worry about fixing the house. Raj of course took him up on his offer, and excitingly, for his first mission he gets to return home.
