Background:
The Balericus family is descended from the Roman Pracfectus Alae of the Auxilia cavalry attached to the VI Legion, before it departed the isles to do battle with Alaric I in 401 A.D. With no legion left to serve, the cavalry unit attached itself to the city of Dorchester as a mounted militia, and the family became one of the first Equites of the city. As time went on, new lands were added to the family's already considerable domains. One such fief was an ancient roman villa in the Earldom of Salisbury called Falt. A minor holding brought in by marriage, it was usually given to the younger brother from the main family line. With holdings now in two domains, the family decided to send their sons to train at the courts of both the Earl of Salisbury and the Praetor of Dorset; the elder child would continue squire with the Praetor, while the younger was sent to the Earl. And so it was that Quintus Sextus Balericus sent his oldest son, Quintus Septimus Balericus to train at the court of the Praetor of Dorset, while his younger son, Quintus Octavus Balericus, trained with the Earl of Salisbury. With the death of the elder Sextus, Septimus took the position as head of the house, while Octavus was left to the villa at Falt. Septimus soon had a son, Quintus Nonus Balericus, and Quintus Decimus Balericus was born just a few short months later to Octavus and his wife. The two boys never really got along, as Nonus always looked down on his cousin; taunting him with the knowledge that their villa would be given to his younger brother and Decimus would have to settle for whatever position his father could afford for him. As time went on, however, a brother was not forthcoming to Nonus, and with a string of daughters, Septiums feared for his line. He coddled Nonus, keeping him from all harm and spoiling the boy greatly. When his time to squire with the Praetor arrived, he sent his own master-at-arms to care for the boy, even though the Praetor frowned upon it. Nonus has grown up to be a spoiled, bad tempered bully that even the family has trouble controlling. Meanwhile, Decimus grew up in a loving household with his two sisters. His father was tough on his heir, but was also fair and compassionate; traits he had learned from the Earl. When his time came, Octavus went with his son to the court of Earl Roderick, who himself had just had his first boy child. He was placed in the care of Sir Leo and for the next 5 years was taught what is was to be a knight. When the great battle at St. Albans began, both his father and uncle were in the forefront of the fighting. His father took a mortal wound and died on the battlefield, while his uncle, Septiums, succumbed to the poisoning after the battle. With only one heir to the lands of the Balericus, the family forced Nonus to separate the villa at Falt from the main line's holdings, and bequeath it to the now cadet line of the family, Decimus. As he was going to be knighted anyway, the family felt that giving the small fief away was in their best interest, and helped to sever ties with the Earldom, as the political undercurrents were beginning to move against the Lady Ellen and her 10 year old son Robert.
Appearance:
Quint stands just shy of six feet with a slim, well muscled body. His black hair is trimmed short in Roman fashion, and his cheeks kept shaved. He usually dresses in his "working clothes" a set of travelling garments made of tough and durable material, but does have a set of "fancy" cloths for the rare social occasion. His armor, a gift from his Uncle, is decidedly Roman in structure, looking more like a legionnaire of the past, than a modern knight. Augustus - Light Warhorse:
