About Quencyras
Born of a human father from Nirmathas and an elven mother from Kyonin, Quen was raised by the latter, Amruneraeal. Like most half-elves he didn't fit in and was treated with contempt, regardless of his archery skills and acute senses. When he was old enough he left for Nirmathas to find his father, but almost stayed in Erages where he felt a sense of kinship for the first time.
In Nirmathas Quen's youthful passions were swept up in the constant fight for independence with Molthune even though his father cared nothing for him. Some people treated him as badly as when he was in Kyonin, but he found camaraderie with others. Quen was at the battle of Deadeye's Haunt where his line of archers was brutally assaulted by a large force early in that week-long battle; they tried to scatter, but were cut down like weeds.
As Quen lie on the ground, a killing stroke arcing towards him, time slowed and anger filled his veins, anger at his heritage, anger that his fellow defenders were being slaughtered, and anger for each and every time he'd been mistreated. His bow was cleaved in two and his dagger had already been knocked from his hand, so he groped on the ground for anything with which he could channel his anger. The world became tinged with red as his hands found a large hilt and with a roar of rage he plunged the blade under the rib-cage of his attacker.
When Quen awoke it was night, but pain was his world; he was surrounded by bodies and a bloody greatsword lie in his grasp. He had vicious-looking wounds, but none were deep enough to be fatal. There was fighting in the distance. Quen found the sword's former owner and took the weapon's harness, securing the fine blade before binding his wounds. He then gathered a bow (not nearly as fine as the one from his elven homeland) some arrows, and a bloody waterskin from a fallen friend before walking away from the sounds of battle.
He traveled alone in the wildernesses of Nirmathas and then Varisia for years, eventually making his way to Riddleport where he joined an expedition for the Mwangi Expanse; he wanted to be further away from his haunted, anger-filled past. Even though he wasn't as experienced as the rest of the crew he was hired when he showed his keen perception by winning against a Varisian shell game shuffler several times in a row, even when the man cheated. He earned his keep on the ship south as a lookout, helping them avoid pirates even through The Shackles.
From Bloodcove they traveled through the Mwangi Expanse seeking ancient ruins and some famed, lost treasure. Quen still felt like an outcast, but now it was unknowingly his own perceptions that caused it for the expedition was comprised of a mix of races who were open for camaraderie. With his scouting they were able to avoid many fights, but when a battle took place he didn't fight much for he was the least skilled in a fight. He really came through for the group though when they were ambushed by some native Mwangi people; much to his horror Quen found he was good at killing humans. Shortly thereafter he left the group. For years he lived near various settlements in the Mwangi Jungle acting as a guide and avoiding fights. One expedition took him to the Ruins of Kho where he decided to move on to Osirion.
Quen spent years in Osirion in much the same way as he did in the Mwangi Expanse, except many of the ruins there were underground and presented different dangers. In Sothis he was hired by Amenopheus several times before being recruited as a Pathfinder, seeing greater potential in the scout than he was allowing himself to achieve. The Sapphire Sage worked on breaking past Quen's social defenses periodically for about a year, even getting him a new elven bow when he helped procure a desired relic. That the bow came from Quen's mother was intriguing, but it was the wide-range of traveling Pathfinders do that convinced him to join. He could now keep running from his past while working with different people each time so he wouldn't have to worry about becoming too familiar with anyone. Maybe if his travels took him to Kyonin he'd visit his mother and maybe, if things go as Amenopheus plans, Quencyras will learn to belong somewhere and unlock his true potential.
