Story

From the official Commerce League report concerning Plamen’s exile from Kaer Maga
14 Abadius, AR 4713

They say a vision of what the boy would become drove a Varisian witch to curse his mother while he was still in her womb. Probably a tall tale. Visions aren’t true anymore in the Age of Lost Omens are they? Not to mention that it would be a pretty impractical way to kill a child anyway. What, was she hoping she’d miscarry or something? Why not just put a pillow over the baby’s face or arrange for him to be run over by a wagon? Or kick over a lantern in the wagon where she’s giving birth? Of course, that is exactly what happened. Or so they say. I’m sure it was just an accident.

We do know that Plamen was one of the few survivors of a Varisian caravan that nearly burned to the ground outside Kaer Maga the night of his birth. Plamen. Flame. An fitting name and an auspicious one for a Bloatmage. But names don’t really carry power. Those are tall tales too. The Varisians are full of them. Instead of being raised in a caravan on the roads of Varisia, he grew up within the walls of Kaer Maga. Knowing how the Varisians feel about people living in towns, that was probably a curse too. Maybe they should call him the Thrice-cursed instead of the Ember. But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. That would only be two curses, wouldn’t it. And Ember seems pretty appropriate too.

Once in Kaer Maga, Plamen was taken in by the Bloatmage Fifica. That fat cow. Dead fat cow. Leader of the Greens. She probably saw something in the boy. Otherwise, he would have wound up as a slave in The Warren. Or a Tallow Boy. Something worse than he became...or something better. Depends on your point of view. Life in Kaer Maga can be a b~~+* for the kids. Some of Fifica’s writings suggest she believes the boy’s lineage can be traced back to Runelord Krune. That his clan goes all the way back to ancient Thassilon. Rubbish. Thought that most scholars believed those people became Shoanti. But you know how arrogant the Greens are. Were. Lissalans. Looking to show how damned important they and their kids are. Real or adopted. Least they’re all as dead as their god now.

Nature or nurture, Plamen showed real promise. He certainly didn’t look the part. Fat, baby-faced. But, the Greens liked to test their initiates...against one another. Find out when they’re ready for the next secret. Most Bloatmages are loners. But the Greens felt that competition bred competence. Then mastery. And nowhere was competition said to be greater than among the evokers. So when a chubby ten-year old boy defeats initiates twice his age, it got attention. Mostly bad. The other initiates turned on him. Ostracized him. Refused to help him at all. Surprised he didn’t turn up as a burnt and blackened husk in a dark alley in The Warren like some of the others. Probably his demeanor. Boy looks harmless and he’s quick with a self-deprecating joke, but somewhere inside there is a steel soul.

They say he became a voracious reader. Determined to learn everything he could. To surpass them. To surpass all Greens. All Bloatmages. All wizards. Perhaps even the Runelords themselves. That’s when he met Quink. Brodert Quink. A cataloger at the Founder’s Archive in Magnimar. Fifica sent him to Magnimar to do some research for her at the Archive. Lucky for the boy. That’s when everything went to hell between the Greens and the Commerce League. Third curse. You know that story. Fifica dead and all the rest. Leaving us with what to do with the boy. Pretty simple actually. He wasn’t part of it. But, we can’t leave him to start things anew. Could make sure he quietly disappears. But, Quink written and he’s willing to take him in Sandpoint. Something about needing help with some old Thassilonian tower. End of the world. I say we let him go and never come back.
