Born in Longacre, Pava’s parents—like many in the small town—had retired there after a long service to the ruling Thrune hierarchy. Her father never talked much about his specific past, other than to say that he worked for the Thrunes. It’s always been Pava’s belief that he must have been some kind of spy. Her mother had been a Hellknight, and was known to have been fierce. Of course, most of this is conjecture on Pava’s part; she never really knew her parents. They were assassinated when she was quite young, leaving her to be raised by her sister. Nessa, 15 when Pava was born and only 17 when their parents died, did what she could to provide for her younger sister. Sadly, it was usually not enough, and the two grew up mostly on the streets. Vernal Trank, a neighborhood baker (note: could be Cimri), helped make sure that Pava was fed—and that led to lasting friendship that still remains—but Cheliax and Longacre aren’t the kinds of places known for compassion, so the pair struggled most of the time. Pava grew up admiring her sister’s hard work, seeing how much she struggled to keep them both alive, and to provide a future for Pava. That future, it seems, would lead to the church. Nessa would never say how she made it happen, but she got Pava into an early-entry Inquisitor training program with the church of Asmodeus when the younger sister was just 12. Early on, Pava was enamored of the church of Asmodeus, but as time went on, she realized that what she really admired was the orderly structure of Hell, and the hard work that went into building and maintaining that elegance. When she understood that it wasn’t Asmodeus, but all of Hell that she revered, she knew she had to leave the church. She’s now just returned to Longacre to find Nessa and deliver this (to Pava, happy) news, and has stopped for tea and biscuits with Vernal.
The sun was shining brightly as Pava rode into Longacre in the early afternoon. Already, her camel was drawing stares, but Pava didn’t let it bother her. Ramael’s as good as any horse; who cares if he’s a little odd-looking. She scratched his neck, then had to hold him up briefly as some street urchins ran into the street, chasing each other in what looked to be a game of “Devil May Care.” She smiled. I remember that; living on the street was never bad when the weather was nice.
Five years away didn’t make much difference to her sense of direction. Pava knew exactly where she was going. She directed the camel down a side street until she found Vernal’s bake shop. She dismounted, and gave the animal a quick command to stay put. No ropes would be needed; Ramael was well-trained, and woe to the person who felt like bothering that beast. She walked in, the bell above the door bringing a happy reminiscence. ”Just a minute,” she heard from the back, and smiled at the sound of her old friend’s voice. Vernal came around to the front of the shop, and an instant smile jumped to his face. ”Pava Arioch, as I live and breathe!” He came quickly around to the front of the counter where he embraced the young girl. He grasped her shoulders and held her out at arm’s length as he studied her. ”You’ve grown up! You still look like you, though. Healthy and strong! Your parents would have been so proud. Here, sit, I’ll get the tea on.”
She sat at one of the small tables in the front of the shop, and studied her friend as he busied himself making tea and gathering biscuits. If Pava herself was showing the intervening years by growing into a healthy adult, Vernal was showing those same years by growing old. His motions were slower, more deliberate. Is that a limp? As he brought the tea and biscuits over and sat down, he must have seen something in her eye. ”Yes girl, I’m truly an old man now. I’ve always been old, at least compared to you, but now I feel it too. Worry not; that’s the way of the world. I leave it to you, now! So tell me everything, is the soon-to-be-famous Inquisitor of Asmodeus ready to conquer the world in the name of our Queen?” Pava opened her mouth to respond, but didn’t quite know what to say. ”Well, that’s not really how things turned out. I didn’t complete the program. I hope you’re not… disappointed. I know Nessa will be.” Pava’s eyes went to her tea, where she fidgeted, dunking a biscuit too many times. Vernal’s hand reached out and lifted her chin. ”Girl, I know you, if you didn’t complete the program, there’s a good reason; never worry about that sister of yours. Tell me what happened.”
At that, the words poured out. Time seemed to pause as Pava told the tale of the last five years in the Church of Asmodeus. Octana, the Hellknight trainee who’d become such a good friend to Pava and all the trouble they’d gotten into (and the glories they’d won as well). Ruve, the beautiful and charming Inquisitor trainee (from Nirmathas, of all places) that she’d alternately fallen in and out of love with. And finally, her disillusionment with Asmodeus. ”It’s not that I don’t revere him; it’s not that at all. I just think that Hell itself is so fascinating. Everything works together in this delightful symphony of hard work and beautiful order.”That’s really what I want, real “Hell on Golarion.” That’s what would solve all of our problems. I want to be a part of that!”Asmodeus is a part of a glorious whole, but I just think the whole is the most important part.” She looked Vernal in the eye. ”So that’s why I had to leave; I’m going to have to strike out on my own on this.”
Vernal smiled. ”Is that what’s worrying you? There’s nothing wrong with that, girl, nor will there ever be.” Pava smiled back. “Thanks Vernal. You’ve been my dearest friend—sometimes my only friend—for so long. I don’t know if I can ever find a way to thank you. If you hadn’t fed me and Nessa all those years ago…. Nobody else cared about lost children in the streets.” Placing his hand over hers, the old man just smiled in response, then got up and began clearing the cups and plates.
Pava leaned back in her chair, feeling better about her decision than ever. Looking out the window, Pava was surprised to see that dusk was settling in. ”Vernal, it’s gotten so late! I need to go find Nessa, and I’ll probably have to rent a room until I can find a place of my own, and figure out where things go from here.” Vernal paused in his work, an uncomfortable look passing across his face. ”About that. Nessa’s not around anymore. I don’t know what happened. She struggled so hard raising you; when you went off to Egorian, things started to look good for her—for a while at least. She only had one mouth to feed after that, so any money she could earn was going farther, but I think maybe raising you was a focus that she needed. With you gone, she seemed to lose her direction. In the past couple of years she’d been bouncing from place to place, job to job, sometimes living on the streets again.” He looked her in the eye then shook his head. ”I know, girl. I know. But I haven’t seen her in Longacre since before the winter. I’m sorry, Pava.”
10 minute background:
Step 1:Write at least 5 concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind.
1) Pava’s parents were assassinated when she was young; she was raised by her much older sister in poverty
2) Her sister worked hard so they would survive, and sacrificed so that Pava could be trained in the Asmodean church as an Inquisitor
3) Pava had an epiphany in the church that led her away from Asmodeus in particular and towards the philosophy of diabolism instead, abandoning her Inquisitor path
4) Pava doesn’t believe in fate/destiny; values hard work above all other virtues
5) Pava doesn’t think most people work as hard as she does, and sometimes will make her disdain of that known
Step 2:List at least 2 goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.
1) Pava wants to find the truth about her parents’ deaths and her sister’s disappearance
2) I would like Pava to have the opportunity to bargain her soul to become a devil
Step 3:List at least 2 secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!
1) Even though (when she knew her) Nessa was the hardest worker Pava knows, and that work ethic is largely her own inspiration, Pava never liked Nessa
2) Pava’s parents, a retired Hellknight (father) and Thrune agent/spy (mother) died protecting a secret that involves Pava; their assassin is her current protector/friend, Vernal
Step 4:Describe at least 3 people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile.
1) Nessa Arioch – Pava’s older sister; they haven’t seen each other in 5 years (when Pava was 12 and Nessa 27)
2) Octana, a Hellknight apprentice that trained with Pava in the church, a best friend and confidante who shared many good times in the church
3) Vernal, fed/clothed Pava from a young age when she lived on the street, still a close friend that she meets and shares tea with from time to time
Step 5:Describe at least 3 mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
1) Pava never shares food and often takes more than her portion; she will pocket extra food if she can
2) Pava gets restless and will busy herself when there’s nothing to do
3) Pava is meticulous about her personal hygiene
