James Jacobs wrote: If folk want me to reveal the truth behind the various burning mills before Pathfinder 4 (and perhaps put in a spoiler as to HOW the PCs can figure this out before then), let me know and I can post it. It's a pretty minor part of the adventure path overall, in any event, but I can see how in some games it can get to be more important. I vote a big yes on this please. My players keep coming back to it. They smell a mystery and they're at least as interested in this as they are in the main quest. And I don't feel like railroading them away from it, since it helps solidify their feeling of belonging in the campaign and the town.
Thanks tbug, I'd already found his answer by the time I got back to this thread. Here it is. James Jacobs wrote:
Only thing, from my reading of the Hinterlands map, none of those three mills are more than 4 miles from Sandpoint, and the locals (and certainly the DM) would KNOW what kind of mill each was. There might be all sorts of speculation and rumor about the fires and who set them, but people would know whether they got flour or lumber from them before they burnt down. In my campaign, this could go either way. The PCs have already picked up on the arson rumors as a plot hook and I've embellished (like telling them that no, the Sarnetti's haven't been making a killing in the grain market, but that lumber prices have shot up dramatically because of the competing demand for timber between the Valdamar shipbuilders and the Carpenters, who need lots of lumber to rebuild the burnt mills. If two of the mills were grain and one lumber, that would actually fit what I told them just as well as if they were three grain mills.
James Jacobs wrote: It has elements that are further explored in Pathfinder 2. It may or may not have more elements in Pathfinder 4. I was looking through The Skinsaw Murders and the only element I saw where this was mentioned was on page 12 where it says: Skinsaw Murders wrote: The Scarnettis, the noble family that owns the lumber mill, have a reputation for being ruthless—there are rumors that they’re responsible for burning several competing lumber mills in the region... But my reading of the Sandpoint chapter in Burnt Offerings: Burnt Offerings wrote: Mysterious fires have claimed the Soggy River Mill, the Biston Pond Mill, and most recently the Cougar Creek Mill, leaving this mill the only functioning grain mill in the region. places the fires at competing grain mills. Which is more supported by you folks at Paizo? Were the Soggy River, the Biston Pond, and the Cougar Creek Mills lumber mills or grain mills?
I'm wondering if there's a tie-in here? Spoiler: The wheelwright's daughter, Tanethia Wheen drowned in a mill pond last year. Does this tie into the burnings? Perhaps she was unfortunate witness to the attempted arson of the Scarnetti mill and was 'hushed'? Or... her ghost is haunting mills and causing fires in some bizarre fashion?
Is there a name for the coins minted in various places?
Anyway, are there names for the coins in common distribution? Above and beyond the generic gold, silver, etc...

I'll just wait and see then. #2 will be out before the party would pursue it anyway.

I'm not 100% sure how it worked, though... if you feel you should be getting the charter subscriber bonuses, I'd recommend you contact our customer service department or post a message over in the customer service thread. Thanks James! You guys never cease to amaze me. Very helpful and open. And talented. You guys are putting out good stuff. good, good stuff.
this is what I did for the Mayor's speech <liberally cribbed from several of you, from the module, plus a good bit of my own>
People have been up for hours, several merchants have set up tents to vend their wares of food, clothes, local crafts, souvenirs, and beverages. Others folk have arrived early to gain positions near the podiums and the tables beyond. Tables loaded with a picnic buffet ready for the congregation after the ceremonies. The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly as scheduled, and the turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable. The square before the church is crowded now, the women loading the tables and the merchants hawking their goods join other locals and travelers as Mayor Deverin kicks off events with her opening speech. “Good morning everyone.” The attractive and personable woman welcomes the crowd with her usual friendly attitude. Her excitement is obvious and proves contagious as she welcomes visitors and locals alike. “I see everyone’s arrived. Even Larz Rovanky has left off tanning hides to be here. I’m sure his workers are glad it’s not their hides getting tanned, at least not today.” When the chuckles died down and Larz stopped glowering past a reluctant smile, Mayor Deverin continued. ”It's wonderful to see so many of you here to join us on this proud day, and I'd like to extend my welcome to the many new faces I see in the crowd. As Mayor, I’d like to extend welcome to you on behalf of the town. I hope you all are enjoying your stay here in Sandpoint and I sincerely hope that you're having a wonderful time. Our town has much to offer and I hope we can consider you as new friends. Spend some time in Sandpoint and you’ll grow to love it like we do. And even if you don’t stay long, spend your money while you’re here!” Several of the merchants gave that vigorous applause, and the Mayor let the crowd settle before continued over the remaining chuckles. “And to all of the old faces I see, thank you for coming and thank you for everything that each of you has done to keep this town strong. Thank you especially for all the time, sweat, and love you’ve put into building this fine cathedral. Sandpoint didn’t seem complete without a church. We’ve always had heart. The true heart of Sandpoint is you, her people. But now we have an expression of that heart, and we built it ourselves!” The crowd responded with a roar, and it was a while before the Mayor could continue over the applause. “Thank you, thank you all. And without further ado, let me introduce the next speaker our own Sheriff, Belor Hemlock!” She indicated a dark-skinned, bulky man, clearly of Shoanti descent, wearing his armor and armed with a sword that was as much symbol of office as a weapon.

Koveras wrote: Will any of the future installments of RotR have a calendar system that we can use for our group's campaign journals and such? It would be a nice treat to know the world's dating system, when the major festivals/annual events are, and even when the phases of the moon occur, just for role-playing purposes. Actually, I logged on here to ask this very question, and a couple related ones. Is there a moon? More than one? Is time kept beyond the seasons and years? (If there was no moon it's doubtful we'd have months). what are the seasons like in Sandpoint? Is there a cold winter, or is it wet and rainy? Does it get very hot in summer? If there are months, what are their names? I am guessing all these little details will be in the Gazetteer that comes out next January?
Try this thread. The first set of links is broken, but the ones further down (At the DigitalDungeonCast gallery) work fine. And the maps the guy did are great!

It doesn't seem like they've been preying on anything, and they don't seem to ooze blood. Hateful little buggers.

sort of like the relationship of chain shirt to chainmail. I like this armor, and yeah - barbarians might just use it instead of a chain shirt. Way to go Paizo!
These hills are mentioned as an arc of rocky outcroppings surrounding Sandpoint. I can't find them on the hinterlands map on page 33 of the print version. I assume they are the hills just to the west of the Devil's Platter? Possibly also continuing north across the Turandarok River, around where someplace named Ravenroost is labeled?
Sandpoint is amazing! Oh wait, that's the title of this thread. But it is. You've got the most important thing right - giving the people of the place sufficiently fleshed-out personalities that a good DM knows how they'll react to whatever the PCs throw at them. Cuz... you know them dang PCs are gonna do stuff you never expected. Side note: I'm not a charter subscriber? But I converted my Dragon/Dungeon subs to Pathfinder and I got Burnt Offerings...

Thanks James, for the heads up! My player with the gay Crusader of Iomedae will be happy to know that not only is there a homosexual Paladin in Sandpoint, but that he could have been sent to the Abby after Chopper made him an orphan. Michael F wrote:
