Background:

Othos’ father was a man of questionable morals and even worse judgment. A renegade Aglarondan necromancer who initially cast his lot with the Red Wizards of Thay, he then went on to betray his new masters in favour of Zhengyi, the ascending Witch-king of Vaasa. Othos was born in the Witch-king’s court as the unforeseen result of one of his father’s innumerable indiscretions. Othos’ father overestimated his own power a few years later and led an ill-fated attempt to oust one of Zhengyi’s chief lieutenants and claim that position for himself; in the ensuing chaos, he fled the lich’s wrath with his young son and a large amount of pilfered valuables. The pair spent the next decade or so fleeing from agents of both the Red Wizards and the Witch-king, bouncing from city to city. Constantly hounded by trackers and assassins, they moved from Mulmaster to Westgate to Hlondeth to Mintar to Sammarash until yet another of his father’s paramours finally betrayed him to bounty hunters in Calimport. Ironically, it was neither Red Wizards or Vaasans who killed the haggard necromancer, but rather adventurers in employ of the Damaran king Gareth Dragonsbane, who also coveted the stolen relics.

Othos, still in his early teens, was left with virtually nothing - the woman his father had entrusted with some funds to guarantee Othos’ education and upbringing stole the money and then left town. The deprived, talented kid was eventually taken in and apprenticed by a kindly older wizard. Unfortunately, his new master’s kind-heartedness turned out to be his bane, as he was killed by a gang of child criminals during a mugging a few years later. Othos took his master's meager spellbook and vowed revenge upon the world that had robbed him of the only figure he had ever liked and respected. At that time, Shar began whispering to him in his dreams, and the angry young man wholeheartedly embraced the teachings of the Lady of Loss.

Though evil, Othos is not without a tender side. He is fond of unspoiled nature and small animals, and, after his years of constant travels, has a soft spot for orphans and vagabonds. He is also loyal to his (admittedly few) friends, as he realises that his father’s profligate opportunism brought doom upon him. Although he is fascinated by the Shadow Weave, he has no talent whatsoever for it, and this has made him uncertain about some of Shar’s tenets - enough so that he has withdrawn from active participation in the Sharran cult in order not to outed as a non-Shadow Weave user. The years spent fleeing the Vaasans and Thayans has instilled Othos with a pathological antipathy towards Red Wizards; also, after a childhood spent with an experiment-oriented necromancer with a demonic familiar, Othos hates undead with a passion, and is deeply distrustful of evil outsiders (especially quasits).

Othos' adventuresome companions include Absalon, Shador and Torbjørn, as well as occasional sidekicks Berzeral and Gimble. Together, they intend to leave their mark on the Realms, for better or (more probably) for worse.
