About Othaniel

Description
Image
Othaniel wears a pressed, clean uniform, the Taldan symbol emblazoned on the front. His forearms are left bare showing the red gems growing in eratic patterns in his sandy-colored skin. His head is left bald and smooth. His face is broken by the appearance of several fissures in his skin, much like the fissures in the side of a mountain. He carries an impressive blade--a falcata with a bright, shining blade imprinted with the image of a mountain range and an intricately decorated gold handle, a chain running across it as a type of blade guard.

Special Abilities:
Ferrous Growth Oreads with this racial trait learn how to mimic the magic of their shaitan ancestors. Once per day, such an oread can cause a touched piece of nonmagical iron or steel to grow into an object up to 10 pounds in weight, such as a sword, crowbar, or light steel shield. This object remains in this form for 10 minutes or until broken or destroyed, at which point it shrinks back to its original size and shape.
Stone in the Blood Oreads with this racial trait mimic the healing abilities of the mephits, gaining fast healing 2 for 1 round anytime they are subject to acid damage (the acid damage does not need to overcome the oread's resistances or immunities to activate this ability). The oread can heal up to 2 hit points per level per day with this ability, after which it ceases to function.
Energy Resistance Oreads have acid resistance 5.
Self-Taught Scholar Being self-taught has made it necessary for you to scour all documentation you can get your hands on. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Linguistics checks to decipher unfamiliar languages, and Linguistics is always a class skill for you. In addition, you gain a +1 trait bonus on Spellcraft checks made to decipher the writing on a scroll.
Battlefield Disciple You are skilled at supporting your allies in the heat of battle. You gain a +2 trait bonus on Heal checks made to stabilize a dying creature. In addition, when you successfully use the aid another action in combat to grant an ally a bonus on her next attack roll, the bonus you grant increases by 1.
Combat Casting You get a +4 bonus on concentration checks made to cast a spell or use a spell-like ability when casting on the defensive or while grappled.
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Falcata) You make attack rolls with the weapon normally.
Arcane Pool (4/day) A magus can expend 1 point from his arcane pool as a swift action to grant any weapon he is holding a +1 enhancement bonus for 1 minute. These bonuses can be added to the weapon, stacking with existing weapon enhancement to a maximum of +5. Multiple uses of this ability do not stack with themselves.
Spell Combat A magus learns to cast spells and wield his weapons at the same time. This functions much like two-weapon fighting, but the off-hand weapon is a spell that is being cast. To use this ability, the magus must have one hand free (even if the spell being cast does not have somatic components), while wielding a light or one-handed melee weapon in the other hand. As a full-round action, he can make all of his attacks with his melee weapon at a –2 penalty and can also cast any spell from the magus spell list with a casting time of 1 standard action (any attack roll made as part of this spell also takes this penalty). If he casts this spell defensively, he can decide to take an additional penalty on his attack rolls, up to his Intelligence bonus, and add the same amount as a circumstance bonus on his concentration check. If the check fails, the spell is wasted, but the attacks still take the penalty. A magus can choose to cast the spell first or make the weapon attacks first, but if he has more than one attack, he cannot cast the spell between weapon attacks.
Spellstrike Whenever a magus casts a spell with a range of “touch” from the magus spell list, he can deliver the spell through any weapon he is wielding as part of a melee attack. Instead of the free melee touch attack normally allowed to deliver the spell, a magus can make one free melee attack with his weapon (at his highest base attack bonus) as part of casting this spell. If successful, this melee attack deals its normal damage as well as the effects of the spell. If the magus makes this attack in concert with spell combat, this melee attack takes all the penalties accrued by spell combat melee attacks. This attack uses the weapon's critical range (20, 19–20, or 18–20 and modified by the keen weapon property or similar effects), but the spell effect only deals ×2 damage on a successful critical hit, while the weapon damage uses its own critical modifier.
Spell Recall The magus learns to use his arcane pool to recall spells he has already cast. With a swift action he can recall any single magus spell that he has already prepared and cast that day by expending a number of points from his arcane pool equal to the spell's level (minimum 1). The spell is prepared again, just as if it had not been cast.

Background:
But what is it, Othaniel asked. The text seemed ancient, imposing, powerful. He poked at the bloodstained book--sword lying on top--then bent back to the dying man, where Otheniel's fingers held a bloody rag pressed to the stomach. And why me?

The man--Othaniel didn't even know his name--laughed weakly. I've asked him the same question, he said pointing in the direction of his--my, Othaniel corrected--book and sword. Othaniel looked into the distance in that direction, but it seemed this man must be mad. Doesn't matter now, the stranger said weakly. Take it. The book too. Learn to use them. You'll learn.[/b] His voice was near a whisper now.

Othaniel looked around. What this man needed was help. The wound was too deep. But there was no help. No one for miles. Othaniel had gone on this walk through the woods expecting peace. And that's what he found now. Now that he needed someone. Don't worry sir. You'll get to keep your sword, and your book. I'll keep you alive.

The man laughed again, but this time there was no reply. He simply stared into the sky, eyes fixed on a point. His eyes began to lose focus, and Othaniel tried to keep the man lucid. But it was too late. He died.

Othaniel took the book, hefting it's weight. He grabbed the sword as well. Then he stopped. [i[Was this sword always tarnished and dull?[/i] It had seemed to shine when he first found the man. But maybe that was a trick of the light.

Othaniel began walking back home. He began thinking of where he could hide the book. It obviously contained magic. If his father found it, he'd burn it or take it away, just like he had the holy symbol Othaniel had brought home before. You are a soldier. That is what we do in this family. You're even built like a soldier. Not like a priest. If you abandon what I've done and your grandfather . . . and on and on it would drone. Well not this time. This book was his.

Arriving home, Othaniel deposited the sword in a trunk--he had plenty of those--and hid the book. He came back for the book often, fascinated by the new world he found there and seeming to forget the sword entirely. He began practicing in private, trying not to let it show when he was given training in fighting. But he did learn. He could see how fighting with swords and with magic were related. It just seemed natural.

That was when the war with Cheliax broke out. Othaniel was volunteered early, by his father. But Othaniel was good. He proved himself early. A capable soldier that could be relied upon. And he was. Often placed in some of the most heated places of battle, Othaniel perfected his mix of magic and martial prowess. He did well.

One morning, when preparing for battle, he opened his trunck and found the strange sword he had received from the stranger. What is that doing here, he thought, I don't remember bringing it with me. Othaniel picked it up. It felt strange in his hands. He took a couple practice swings, blade whooshing through the air. While Othaniel was no good with the weapon, he could see its potential.

He began training with the weapon. Learned how to use it. Soon it went everywhere with him. He used this blade till it felt like an old friend. Hello. I am Therin, a voice echoes in Othaniel's head. He stopped, nearly letting a blade take off his head. Don't stop. Keep fighting you fool. Othaniel did. And somehow managed to not die.

Who are you, Othaniel managed.

I told you. I'm Therin.

But that tells me nothing. Where are you? Othenial looks around, trying not to get killed.

Right here. You are holding me. Are you really that dense?

The sword? Othaniel steps back, nearly dropping the sword.

I see I must spell this out for you. I am Therin. The sword you are holding. I am alive. Awakened. Intelligent. However you want to say it. Hello.

But. But

Ahem. I believe I have said hello and introduced myself a few times now. Any chance of reciprocation?

Erm. Othaniel. Hello.

There seems to be a mental shrug. Close enough. But my it is nice to stretch.

Othaniel finally steps back from the battle, letting someone else take his place. He looks at the sword confused and for the first time realizes it is shining again. Like before. But you're a sword.

Is this what passes for greeting now days. Well then, you are a human.

Oread actually.

Oh. Well you look the same.

It's a little . . . nevermind. I'm human. Othaniel shakes his head. He looks around, finally he shrugs and charges into battle.

Personality:
Othaniel wishes he were a cleric. He in fact often asserts that his magical prowess is a gift from Aroden. Othaniel worships Aroden, with a belief that the God will return if enough people begin worshiping him again. Though he is a strong supporter of Aroden and wishes to be a cleric, he knows little of religion--even his own. Instead he makes much of it up as he goes. Othaniel keeps his uniform clean with liberal use of prestidigitation. He does this because he believes that image is everything. Despite this he does little to change the impression he gives with his terse patterns of speech.
