Oscar was the only offspring of Vidmer Salt. His father was the smith in the Hochland town of Breland, as was his father before him. The plan was for Oscar to follow in his footsteps... then the Chaos incursion. Breland was overrun, and his mother was killed in the conflict. He and his father escaped and spent the next several years travelling the Empire, finding Smith work when they could. The young Dwarf developed a skill in prospecting as well. As they traveled he would take what free time he had to prospect for mineral wealth wherever they made their temporary farm.
Oscar was unfortunate to be born with a humongous nose, which caused him to be shy, and not make friends easily. He thus spent much more time in the wilds than trying to make friends or socialize with the other village youths.
About three years ago his father heard that Count Ludenhof was trying to rebuild the old capital, and traveled with Oscar there to try and make a permanent home. There was a lot of work in the beginning, and Oscar threw himself into the challenge, but his wanderlust never left him. As work slowed, and more smiths came to the rebuilding effort, he received his fathers blessing to leave and make his own life. So off he went. If he could only find a new vein of gold, silver, fine iron... or even dare he say it Mithril then perhaps he could make both him and his father rich and famous beyond all hope.
