5' steps and Full attacks for both Aurus and the Procurer

The Procurer turns to the Umbral Agent, taunting him. "Why don'tcha pick on someone your own size..." he says, "Like Aurus here for instance!"

Pointing his blade towards Aurus, the cat reacts, moving forward with a rush and slamming its massive body into the agent. It follows up the first attack with a second, rearing up and bringing its head down onto the agent's with a sharp crack, and trying to dig its sharp, metallic claws into his shoulders.

Yeah, that trick is really the only reason Magical Girl works at all honestly. Without it it'd be way too difficult to build a combat familiar that's useful, and the Magical girl trades away most of the good vigilante stuff to get it. Most of the discussion I've seen agrees that both Chosen One and Magical Girl's familiars can take an archetype.

I think the only drawback to the familiar as-written is that you end up having to keep track of four stat blocks for your familiar once you hit 9th level.

I don't believe there's any other ways to upgrade an improved familiar however.

Prior to leaving:

As the two set out, Osborne reaches down to touch the golden signet ring on his finger, incanting words in gnomish. "Ensimmäistä holvissa päällikön ja harmaa useitakromi, anna minulle voimaa hakea sitä, mikä on kadonnut."
Spoiler:

"For the First Vault's master and by the will of the Grey Polychrome, grant me the power to retrieve that which is lost."

The ring's Abadar-inspired signet morphs into a ruby-red die and a flash of red light fills the room. When it finishes, Osborne stands clad in garrish gold and silver finery, a silver-embroidered crimson cloak and hood, and a golden mask covering his face. Slate, who had run up next to him transforms into what appears to be a felinoid earth-elemental composed of native gold with two cubic-cut rubies for eyes. It growls in a gravelly voice before sinking down into the ground and disappearing from sight. "From here on, please call me The Procurer."

Following Cai'nan, The Procurer draws a small silver shield and a short sword, rushing towards his foe, one of the Silent Shroud guards. As he begins to swing, he stomps the ground hard and a rumbling comes from the ground beneath where he'd started running. Moments later, Aurus, now significantly larger rises up from the ground, bounding towards the same guard. Hoping the sight of the massive golden beast will throw off the guard's concentration, The Procurer strikes low, aiming for the guard's gut with his gnome-sized blade.

Taking a bit of liberty since the Safehouse ability grants a fairly sizable secret lair (60x60x60') for the Vigilante.

Osborne finishes his meal, taking time to savor every bite. There was no sense in rushing, after all. After nightfall was the best time to move around, without a doubt. Certainly the penalties were stiffer, but the ability to not have witnesses was essential, as people in these parts were anything but trustworthy, especially when it came to questions from The Shrouded Ones. "Now that we've eaten, I feel like this Tyrel name sounds familiar," he says to Cai'nan. "Come, let us go check the notes."

He walks to the back of the apartment and pulls on a particularly hefty tome labeled The Excruciatingly Complete History of Trade Laws of the Inner Sea, Vol IX, one of a set of 10 awfully dull looking treatises on trade regulations. Pulling it out completely, he reaches back behind one of the other tomes and presses something, causing an audible click. The bookshelf slides in slightly and moves off to the right, revealing a passage with a ladder going down. He casts light on his ring and heads down the ladder, briefly popping his head back up to say "Be sure to close the bookcase behind you." Before he disappears a second time, Slate rushes in and hops at the gnome, nearly failing to come to a stop and clawing his way back up to Osborne's shoulders much to Osborne's dismay.

The ladder descends two stories, into what must be a portion of the basement that was closed off, revealing a small office along with plenty of storage for supplies and such. Down a small set of stairs is another couple of rooms with storage for weapons and armor, though it is almost completely empty except for Osborne's gear. Walking through, he takes a moment to light the sconces to provide more light for the room, then extinguishes his ring. "I really must get some decent magical torches down here," he says to no one in particular.

He takes a seat at the desk and digs around in the files, mumbling to himself. "Tarkin, Teller, Tormond... Tylmarande..." He stops finally and pulls out a file, "Ahh, here we go, Tyrel, Nicholas. A minor functionary and cultist of a heretic cult. Sounds like the sort of person who might be able to help us." He slides the file over to Cai'nan and walks over to the wall, where he has a map of the area on the wall, studying the best way to get there. "I am going to grab my armor and weapon," he says, walking down the steps to the small armory he maintains below. "You are welcome to store anything you do not wish easily found down here," he calls up as he strips down to don his mithral chain shirt and a fairly drab and dark-colored set of commoner's clothes he kept in case he needed to avoid using magic disguises.

"Let me know when you are ready and we can depart," he adds as he walks up the stairs again.

Sitting to eat, Osborne covers himself with a fine monogrammed cloth napkin. Protecting his fine, if rather drab clothing. Grumbling to himself about the 'palette of shadows' used in the textiles in this gloomy country, he gazes down at his food. A delicate wine-braised pork shank sat on the plate before him, along with a nice glass of vintage Sealord Wine next to it. At least decent food can be had for the right price, he thinks with an inaudible harrumph.

Osborne jumps as the sending begins--it never seemed to give him any warning--and shudders visibly when the words 'Mawangi Expanse' come through. They had tried to send him to that accursed steaming wilderness once before, and he had only lasted a few days before he bribed one of the other Book Club members to finish the task. There was no way he was going to be wandering around some endless expanse of swamp--a place without proper accommodations, good food and high quality alcohol. Just the mention of it sent him into a cold sweat, though thankfully it became quickly obvious that they hadn't suddenly decided to send him to that Abadar-forsaken place again.

He breathes a sigh of relief before answering Cai'nan, his guest these past few months. "I can hardly imagine! But since whomever this 'Tyrel' person is here and not in Mwangi, I am perfectly happy to try to try and help find him." Slate, obviously having sensed his discomfort only moments earlier, rubs up against his leg and lets forth a reassuring 'Meow'. "Oh shush, Slate. You're very supportive when I have food, but nowhere to be found when something bad happens and I'm without it!" he says before tossing a chunk of his pork down to the cat.

Turning back to his guest, he continues. "I suppose we should set about getting some information about this fellow so we can arrange a meeting."

Almost done for real now. Background is mostly done, will post it later this evening, and then make a couple tweaks to the items purchased and should be 100% good to go.

How melee heavy are we? Is Osborne (or his familiar) going to want to be on the front lines most of the time?

Slate (aka Aurus) is pretty beefy and should be an effective front-line tank given his DR and high AC (nearly 30 fully buffed). Osborne can handle melee as well with his high HP and decent buffed AC. After my two levels of eldritch guardian, I could in theory go Vigilante for more social talents, Eldritch Knight to trade social for combat feats for Slate, or more levels of fighter to go all-out melee afterwards at the cost of social and higher level spells, depending on what we need.

We should be ok either way as long as you can bring some healing along. We're pretty melee heavy, but more isn't necessarily a bad thing, and summons provide a lot of flexibility and utility.

One thing that might be an issue is that I am not sure we have many of the knowledge skills covered. Osborne should be able to provide aid in the form of a +4 bonus to all knowledge skills, and he gets to take 10 on aid another checks to do it, but he doesn't actually have any knowledge skills himself.

Yeah, I've arranged with leinathan to swap it out for arcane bond instead. Getting a second familiar is tempting, but would just be too much work I think. Would end up falling between the cracks most of the time.

Passing out, so if something doesn't make sense, let me know.

Questions:

1) Osborne is going on the mission because he takes his work for the Book Club seriously. He was inducted into the Book Club as a means of repaying the debt he incurred after he stole the amulet that gave him and Slate their abilities. Over the years he has become useful to the Book Club for scouting out situations throughout the Inner Sea, using his cover as a merchant to allow him to collect information quietly.

2) The Finklethorpe family originally hails from Brastlewark and were well known gnomish merchants with trade contracts all over the inner sea. They are considered odd for their worship of Abadar.

3) Osborne is perfectly happy being a gnome, and is more traditionally gnomish than his family, worshipping Abadar more out of tradition than a sense of obligation. He has become used to the powers granted him and Slate by the medallion he stole, and rather enjoys the double-life of a
spy/vigilante. He is used to living in luxury, however, and gets tempermental when he cannot seek entertainment and good food/drink, so he attempts to get assignments to major cities. In addition to his talents as a vigilante, he has taken up studying transmutation magic, something he finds rather useful

4) Violence is a means to an end for "The Procurer". In some cases killing is required, although he prefers to leave the dirty work to Slate when he can. Given a choice, however, his preference is to get the things he requires through manipulation, subterfuge, bribery and so on.

5)Without a doubt, good food, drink, and entertainement are high up on Osborne's list. He expects to live in luxury, and will always attempt to make sure he has good living quarters near the entertainment district in any major cities. He is disdainful of small, uncultured towns, finding them dreadfully boring. The only thing worse is trekking out through the wilderness without any of the amenities of city living.

6) Osborne worships Abadar partly out of family tradition, and partly out of recognition of the origin of his amulet, which will one day find its way back to the First Vault.

7)Osborne is essentially the son of gnome merchant 'nobles'. He had quite a bit of experience sweet-talking people before he acquired the amulet. A good portion of his current abilities arise from that amulet. The rest of his skills he has developed over the years in the service of the book club.

Sorry for the delay, ended up not having any free time today like I hoped I would. I've got stat blocks up, but I haven't spent any gold yet, I need to choose like 12 languages, and there are likely lots of mistakes as I'm exhausted :P

Gonna whip up answers to your questions and then the background.
