  • Riven (+1) - Ophelia’s husband, more vengeful in death than he was in life. Ophelia likely does not know the extent to which dying has warped him. She hasn’t yet seen him do anyone harm, short of his stints at temporarily using bodies as a means to find her, an act she discourages. While Ophelia is focused on trying to find Riven a more permanent form, Riven is himself more interested in getting revenge against the man who killed him.

  • Flint (-1) - Over the last couple of years, Ophelia has had a few run-ins with Flint. As a Spirit Trafficker, Flint is constantly trying to capture spirits to sell for a profit - to say nothing of those he keeps for his own experiments. Ophelia fears for what might happen if Flint should get to her husband before she can help him.

  • Aranna the Blessed (Purveyor) - Ophelia relies considerably on Aranna the Blessed to help with her plans. Aranna’s a cultist who lives on a barge in the Nightmarket district. Ophelia is spending more and more time learning of her religion, and poring through her tomes, both mystical and religious, searching for the answer to her problems.

    Background
___________________

Ophelia grew up in Whitehollow, a large city in Akoros. Her family noble, she was raised primarily by a series of maids and servants. By her mid 20’s, her life was what many would have called perfect - she was wealthy, a professor at an academy in Duskvol, and was attempting to get pregnant with her husband, Riven.

When Riven died, Ophelia’s interests shifted dramatically. She became obsessed with learning about spirits, and the potentials of life after death, trying to learn anything about where her husband had gone to. Luckily for her, he hadn’t gone far - Riven had been murdered, and his soul clung to this world, furious about having had its life taken away.

Capable of possessing others, he comes to Ophelia sometimes in different bodies - something she cannot bring herself to get used to. It feels wrong to drag others unknowingly into their private hell, and she instead continues to learn what she can of the arcane in the hopes of finding a way to reunite with him. As this obsession has grown, it has begun to dominate her life, and the Academy has become increasingly less forgiving, leaving Ophelia to see other employment, more in line with her new interests.

Appearance / Personality

As with most people from Akoros, Ophelia has dark hair and fair skin. She continues to dress in the proper and conservative manner expected from both her upbringing and years working in academia - typically clad in high boots, a long skirt, and a blouse with a bright blue waistcoat over it, matching her inquisitive eyes.

Ophelia is keenly observant, and can be quite dangerous. At only 34, she is still young for a widow, but shows no interest in entertaining suitors. She has embraced her independence with ferocity, despite her attempts to find a way to reunite with her husband. This single goal is the focus of her life, and everyone she meets is someone who may help her to attain it, or who may stand in her way.

While she can be kind and compassionate, her loyalty is difficult to acquire - tending to keep herself somewhat closed off and distant.

Questions & Answers

What did Riven do before he was killed?

He was a lawyer, killed by someone he was either moving to prosecute or maybe even defending. Ophelia isn't sure which, as he was never one to talk about his cases much. In all likelihood it's someone powerful - Riven was quite well-known for his talents in twisting the letter of the law.

How did Flint learn about Riven and decide to capture him?

Ophelia isn't sure - Flint denies he's even after Riven, but she knows he is. She thinks it probably involves the circumstances of Riven's death, which she's also not certain about... Her latest theory is that whoever killed him is still trying to silence him, but she doesn't know about what.

You say Riven is more vengeful... but against what? or whom? Does he have a target or has he become more like a poltergeist?

As far as Ophelia knows he's only after the men who killed him, but he has definitely become more of a poltergeist. The first signs of him sort of overstepping were in his highjacking other bodies and going to see her, convincing her of who he was, with little regard for them. He may have stayed in their bodies forever if she hadn't had a problem with it. They're both sort of becoming more unhinged. In Riven's case, he hasn't gotten to the point of violence yet, but it's almost certainly coming.

I don't really have anything in mind for the specifics of Riven's death, or what he's doing now, but I don't expect a reunion between him and Ophelia to be entirely without flaw. She's looking for a way for them to be together again, but I expect he'll need to be dealt with before that happens. I can see him either becoming more tragic, realising the road he's been on, and sacrificing himself, or becoming something of a villain.

How has the Walker family taken to your studies? I imagine with no small amount of argument against it. Also, what does the Walker family own or do?

They've all but disowned her. As much as they liked Riven, in their minds she's being "dramatic". She's supposed to just wear black and move on with her life. They've tried to give her attention, get her to come home and visit, but she's determined to pursue the arcane arts. She has become something of an embarrassment to them now - someone who gave up a fancy life to play with tarot cards. "Who does something like that?" The family themselves own a publishers and printers, putting out everything from newspapers to textbooks.
