Male Human Barbarian 6

Well that was fun. It's been awhile since I've died in an RPG (I believe the last time was a staff of power broken point blank in my characters face).

I must admit I haven't played a barbarian past level 1 before. I guess the whole "no tactics" approach doesn't really seem pan out very well :P *shrug* I went to exactly my negative CON score. So it goes...

Male Human Barbarian 6

Rahesh's shot echoes throughout the Jungle, but the shot may have come too late as Obo falls to the ground with a sickening wet thud.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Ignoring his grievous wounds Obo attacks the giant ape with reckless abandon.

Attack (Club) 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
Damage (Club) 1d10 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Attack (Club) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage (Club) 1d10 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Attack (Bite) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Damage (Bite) 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Male Human Barbarian 6

Nah, I run rptools all the time. Just wanted to check.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Peter, I guess both of us have learned nothing from LG... always carry a backup chain shirt.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Bleeding heavily, Obo draws his club and advances upon the great ape (B8) somewhat warily, howling an apish challenge.

Attack 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 12 - 4 = 18. Damage 1d10 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12, +3 AC for 1 round

Male Human Barbarian 6

What are you using for the map? A virtual tabletop and snapshoting?

Male Human Barbarian 6

Stupid board ate my original post. Saved my middling dice rolls, at least.

Male Human Barbarian 6

"Charu-ku! Demon apes"

Obo howls in anger, a howl that deepens and reverberates as he sustains that.

As he howls, he undergoes a transformation not unlike Balo's, yet somehow different. His teeth elongate, eyes yellow, and fine hair sprouts on his dark frame. He charges one of the smaller apes (B7), not bothering to pull a weapon but instead attacking with his teeth.

Charge attack: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 11 + 2 = 20
Damage: 1d4 + 5 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 5 + (2, 6) = 17, includes Rhino Hide.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Ready

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo smiles a wide grin.

Polyglot:
"Ah, you are a great people! May your hunting go well and may the spirits bless you."

He turns to the others "Gifts to help with thirst! Now we go, kill snakes". He looks excitedly at the thought. For just a moment, he glowers momentarily at Zafira, but it's a passing thing.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Dm feral:
Piss off the party healer, oh yeah :)

Male Human Barbarian 6

DM Feral:
Common Knowledge check for casters having familiars: 1d20 ⇒ 8

He squeezes Zafira harder, almost certainly bruising her shoulder. (Grapple: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17 Subdual: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5).

"You say the snakes are part of you? I don't know what sort of spirits you call, but if you betray us to the serpent-men, I will kill you, just as surely as I will kill them."

He growls at her and stalks off into the night.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo spends most of the night feasting and trading gossip with the other hunters, telling them of events in the colony and other lands of the Jungle. He'll give his singnal whistle to one of the kids to play with.

Later on he'll go looking for Zafira, preferably when she is alone.

DM Feral & Internal Dialogue:
Obo intends to confront Zafira. Questions run through his head. Snakes in her sleeves? Is she in league with the serpent men?

If he finds her (relatively isolated from the others and the tribe):

Obo will approach Zafira and grasp her shoulder, hard. "Tell me now: are you snake on two legs?" Motioning to her wrists "Are you spirit caller for snakes? Why are you with us? Why do you work magic for us?" Intimidate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Male Human Barbarian 6

Polyglot:
"The mission is holy! I have seen these serpent men in my dreams, I feel their evil. I have fought and killed their servants."

"Our tribe has no quarrel with yours, and your hospitality would be remembered. Maybe we could repay you with some of the weapons or magics we steal from the serpent men."

Diplomacy Aid:
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3

Male Human Barbarian 6

Hehe... with those diplo rolls it will be a fun time in the jungle tonight :P

Male Human Barbarian 6

DM Feral:
Diplomacy Aid:1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14. If applicable for Rahesh's actions: Intimidate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo scratches his bushy hair idly as he waits for the Pakwura to show themselves. He thinks for a moment, and then shouts loudly. "You are quiet, and mighty hunters, sons of the panther! Obo does not wish to fight on your sacred land. Listen to our wise-man" he says as he gestures towards Rahesh. Unconsciously he yawns, fully baring his yellowed teeth which somehow seem just a hair too large for the size of his skull.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo sniffs the air quizzically and meditates on the fetishes for a moment. "Pakwura Zenj, agassou men" . The word roughly translates as panther, but for Demitri's benefit he shapes his fingers into claws and makes a sound poorly emulating a growling cat. It looks comical coming from the grown Mwangi man in middle of the noisy, hot jungle.

Polyglot:
"Pakwura tribe is very protective of territory, proud and silent hunters like the spirit cat. Ask nicely, also perhaps give gifts to appease spirit of agassou, then maybe we could pass"

Male Human Barbarian 6

I'm curious if this is run as written or if it's homebrew :)

Male Human Barbarian 6

So what's the plan feral? We going to play this all to the bitter end or we going to gloss over a bit, once we get a rhythm down :)

Male Human Barbarian 6

If everyone is ready to travel again, we should start up again.

When have good supplies at the moment. However, when we begin traveling again, after two days of travel I'd like to change rationing again.

Due to the reduced intake from foraging, please make the following changes:

4 water rations to the 3 people with the healthiest (best fortitude saves and least ability damage.)

6 water rations to the other two.

You treat some dysentary while I go shoot some rabbits.

Male Human Barbarian 6

I guess we should stop and give Demitri and Zafira full water rations for a day or two while Rahesh administers long term care?

What exactly does Zafira do? She doesn't seem to be a cleric, as far as I can tell.

Male Human Barbarian 6

When Obo sees Demitri collapse he mutters an oath to the spirits and then circles around Demitri several times, making threatening sounds to chase off the evil ones.

Polyglot:
"His name is Demitri Not-on-back! He will lay still and and join your world. Leave him alone, evil ones!"

Obo seeks Rahesh out.

Polyglot:
"Zafira, Demitri: we stop and you use healing-without-spirits; we give them plenty water and food. Will this save them from the spirit world?

Male Human Barbarian 6
Rahesh wrote:
How much time/distance do we still have to cover, roughly?

7 days + whatever penalties are incurred for foraging.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Bam! System parameters nailed :)

Transfer 18 units of water from Obo to Rahesh, please.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Alright, given the new spreadsheet values, I think we could start with my suggestion of everyone at 6 liters/day, forage as we go, split the resultant water evenly. If we have a bad day (18 liters) we'll go to half water rations for the next day (3 liters/day). Conversely, if we have a good haul (54 liters), we'll go up to 9 liters/day for the next day.

If anybody reaches 50% of an ability score, we stop and allow Rahesh to do Long Term care (I believe that's what it's called) so that they can get double ability score healing.

This sound ok to eveyone?

Male Human Barbarian 6

How was the new Conan movie? Contemplating seeing it (w/o the spouse :) not her speed)

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo grunts in agreement with Demitri. "Yes, drink slow. Stop one, two day, hunt all day soon"

Male Human Barbarian 6

As always, your collection of bear related trivia is staggering.

You know, there are bears in the jungle. Just saying.

We will have to start foraging every day. We collect, on average, 36 pints of water in our party. If we eventually go down to 6 liters/day, we'll have a 16% water collection safety margin during our travels. Not great. This is the driest rainforest I've ever hear of :)

With 12 pints currently between the 4 party members, we'll want to go so strict rationing (at least 2 liters/day while we stop and forage... if we have a few more hits off the sponge it would help, otherwise, we'll have to go to 1 liter/day ). We will do as Demitri suggests, and forage for two days.

On the positive side, with foraging every day by the end of our journey we'll have a huge surplus of food to sell in the city, even with spoilage. Or we can give it to the poor. Have a banana.

I believe that Rahesh and Balo's lack of maniacally obsessive thread checking is working against their favor, as they can't quickly adjust their water usage against the number of days that transpire. Would they be willing to relinquish rationing rates over to me, and not blame me for any weird afflictions they get as a result :) ?

Too bad we don't have something to help us find our way. It might, you know, help us find some paths.

For the GM:
What are you doing up at 3 AM boyo?

Next time I forage, can I forgo collecting food to collect all water?

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo relishes the feeling of being under the cover of the mother jungle. In his a land he knows well. The sounds of monkeys shrieking their mocking derision comforts him, in a way. Meanwhile the sounds that are unheard... the panther moving more softly then the shadows... haunt his imagination.

Still snakes are here somewhere, hiding in the dark places. It sours the feeling of home and happiness, and puts him on edge.

Male Human Barbarian 6

For some reason can't edit the google doc.

I will cut my water consumption in half (6 pints a day) for the next 3 days.

Next time I forage, can I forgo collecting food to collect all water? Clearly that will be the limiting factor in our expeditions, since at full consumption we use it at a rate 1.5 times higher then that of food (even with losses due to spoilage, which have so far been statistically significant).

If we can't do this, I will suggest we forage every day.

Also, Rahesh will need to borrow some water to survive.

Edit: Meant to say Rahesh.

Male Human Barbarian 6

I might point out that our water will run out tomorrow, according to the spreadsheet.

When you say +2 food -8 water, what does that mean? Lbs, pints, gallons, days?

Male Human Barbarian 6
DM Feral wrote:
How much water is Obo carrying?

"Feraaaal.... google spreadsheets drank my water..."

Re-entered.

If we can get go at least a week before stopping to to forage, it would work out better and still give us "breathing room" in case our foraging rolls are poor (based on the average amount of food people are carrying).

Can our hiree, or anybody else, create water? That would help alleviate things. (at 16 pints/level, that could potentially get several people).

Maybe Demitri can hire a porter :)

Male Human Barbarian 6

Clarifications needed:

What is the Water(rations/day) column in your table?

Now the we understand the rules for travel, will we have a chance to purchase mundane foodstuffs and secure water before we leave? As 8 U.S. pints is one U.S. gallon, I currently lack sufficient water for one day.

Water is 4.17 lbs per 4 pints. Unless we're using the English version of pints, in which case you are correct at 5 lbs per 4 pints. However, I believe the D & D uses U.S. measurement units (U.S. pint: 16 oz, English pint: 20 oz.), since it lists a gallon of water at 8 lbs.
Pounds, fortunately, are about the same in both the U.S. and England.

You know, none of this comes up if you use an ISO system of measurement.

Thanks!

Polyglot:
"Only those strong in the spirits may prevail against monsters-of-dreams. If you have found a spirit-caller, I would pay her price."

Male Human Barbarian 6

"Have seen take many man for slaves; have seen bite makes ill, same for small cousins. Snake head, two legs. Evil. Bite makes dead men big..." he motions a large bloated face, and then waves his hands in front of his eyes "...like see evil spirit and die. No talk, only kill."

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo wanders in a bit later, slightly disheveled and with a small bead of sweat from the jungle heat. He consumes the food with relish, half chewing, half swallowing the meat and eating the fruit two pieces at a time. He doesn't touch the coffee though, after giving it a long, loud sniff. "Good night, good woman. Soon meet man snakes. Maybe kill man snakes"

Male Human Barbarian 6
Demitri Severin wrote:
"I'll take those two. I'm gonna need company all night. Food too." He grins as he points to the older light skinned woman and one of the Mwangi women.

Obo looks in amusement at Demitri.

Polyglot:
"And this from one who says it's hard to get him on his back! Hah!

Obo throws down some gold.

Spoiler:
26 + 1d12 ⇒ 26 + (4) = 30

Then, laughing heartily, he sweeps up the woman with the widest hips and largest breasts in his arms and waddles off with her to bed for the night. He seems to know the way...

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo shrugs and offers to buy the remaining potion that alleviates fatigue.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo is interested in both potions that "return strength to the weary". He asks to taste them, as he tries to determine what magic they contain.

Perception roll:
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo smiles at the mention of Safira's. It's likely any of Sahira's girls would likely cringe if they saw that smile.

"Good words, Demitri. I go also Aboba for magic-against-sickness, then ale and biggest girl" He motions with his hands to emphasize the last part.

Male Human Barbarian 6

Obo puzzles to himself.

Internal Dialogue:
A man who treats sickness and venom but does not speak to the spirits? Has he taken work with madmen? And what is this Ghun? More spiritless magic?

It's easy to tell that Obo has trouble keeping up with the conversation; his dark brows furrow as he tries to pick up on the cadence of the common tongue.

He bows his head deeply to Jindariel, then places his hand gingerly on the elf's shoulder accompanied by the same disturbing, broad grin. "Eldest Jindariel, good to meet. Obo is strong in battle." He motions to Balo. "Two-Swords-as-One also battle strong. You spirit strong? Strong spirits good against man snake"

He then turns to Demitri, sizing him up. "Demitri Not-on-Back, you are strong. Good to travel with you"

Finally Obo turns to Balo and begins speaking polyglot in a hushed tone "Balo Two-Swords-as-One, you speak the words of the Northerners better. Can you ask them if they feel strong and ready? We can leave with tomorrow's early sun."

Male Human Barbarian 6

The shorter and more plainly dressed of the two walks slowly forward. He stops a a few feet short of Rahesh and inclines his head. Then he smiles broadly, exposing yellowed teeth and extends a callused hand to lay on the left shoulder of Rahesh. The gesture is clearly meant to be friendly but coming from this squat Mwangi man it seems slightly disturbing.

"Obo Okurin lira Zenj", which Rahesh can make out to mean "Ape Man of of the Zenj". He switches to a thickly accented common "Honored person, I Obo, friend." Obo pauses a few moments as in contemplation, and turns to the rest quizzically. "Good trip? Feel well? Soon many days travel." He looks very serious. "Be strong, fight many man snake" He struggles for the words momentarily, then turns back to Rahesh and continues in polyglot. "Wise one, do you have strong magic against the snakes kiss and the breath of the tik-tik fly? I fought these awon ejo okurin (snake men) once, and they are like their small cousins. Their kiss brings death" He bows again and waits patiently for Rahesh to speak.

Salutations. I'm Jake. I currently reside in the liberal wonderland/libertarian nightmare of Boulder, Colorado where I help with endeavors relating to the U.S.'s gently declining space program (moment of silence our fallen homies: the Space Shuttle, Apollo and NERVA).

I play Pathfinder and Traveller, and I would play GURPS and Ars Magica, were they not an entirely theoretical construct of gamers imaginations with no actual players.

Full Disclosure:
I used to play with Nick, face-to-face when I lived in SoCal. Beyond having an excellent grasp of the rules, he is entirely logical and thoughtful while breathing life into game worlds: villains don't monologue, the kill the hostages; heroes live, die and gain fame by their own deeds, not merely fait accompli; the battles will be epic and memorable. He is a cogitative storyteller of even temper and a good guy all around.
