Background:

Born and raised in Taladar. His parents were common stock but he showed aptitude and was apprenticed to a house wizard. His apprenticeship was cut short when the house was attacked and he fled, the manor in ruins, his master and the lord and lady killed. He remained on the run for a year (for fear, though it didn't appear that anyone was looking for him), eventually falling in with an adventuring company and after a few successful explorations into dungeons and some ruins, was able to purchase transit to Nex and gained entry into the Arcanamirium. He focused his research on the idea of storage and distribution of magical energies. Utilizing the ioun stones as a template he was trying to create a method of charging and discharging a storage crystal multiple times. His eventual goal is to create simple wands that can be used by anyone, and easily recharged when empty of energy.

He was scarred by his childhood when he was on the run. Penniless and vulnerable, he had experienced significant privation and all because the lord and lady of the household, while experienced, were not sufficient to defend the house against the predations of the neighboring nobility.

He heard about the establishment of the new lands on the frontier through traders who passed through Nex, and while it has been some time since the initial Charter, he has arrived to assist where he can and see that the fledgling land is not subsumed by its neighbors.

Also, his research position at the Arcanimirium was slightly canceled and he was forced to leave Nex by a rival. But that isn't important. His noble aims to aid the new kingdom are much more critical.

Why is he with a rogue...well:

While in Brevoy he heard that a certain barbarian band had made a foray into Numeria some several years distant and had recovered several items, one of which sounded like an energy storage device. His interest piqued, he has hit upon a plan to have a partner break into the barbarian camp, steal any magic or interesting items and then flee. With his magical augmentation and contingency options he figures there may be a chance to recover the energy storage device, along with any associated items of interest.
