I've got a character built somewhat like this.

I've taken the feat Preferred Spell, so I can prepare god-wizard spells and turn them into Fireballs as I need them.

Not optimal, but works for me.

Maths is there no matter what, the tension of rolling is the fun part.

One of the regulars here once posted about house ruling insubstantial back to a fifty percent miss chance, rather than taking half damage. Mathematically, the two are very similar, but rolling to see if you actually hit is more exciting than dividing your damage by two.

There were few thing I hated more than rolling miss chance.

Not that I particularly like insubstantial = half damage, but miss chance can go rot in hell in my books.

Would a Multi-classed Paladin/Avenger or Avenger/Paladin work well?

Multiclass Avenger requires 13 Wis; give Religion Training; and two rounds per encounter of Oath of Emnity: roll twice for all melee attacks against the target of the oath.

Paladin multiclassing into Avenger gets a very useful encounter power to help his big dailies & encounter powers land. On the other hand, the Religion training is wasted. Most paladins should qualify for the feat.

Avenger multiclassing into Paladin is less useful. Many Avengers won't qualify for the feat - they have little use for Str & Cha. The skill training is useful, but without Cha the Divine Challenge is less useful.
