Previously, Snake Fang would not activate when Crane Wing 'deflected' an attack. (See FAQ on deflecting attacks)
However, in the most recent revision of Ultimate Combat, the description of Crane Wing changed:
Crane Wing:
"Once per round, when fighting defensively with at least one hand free, you can designate one melee attack being made against you before the roll is made. You receive a +4 dodge bonus to AC against that attack. If you are using the total defence action instead, you can deflect one melee attack that would normally hit you. An attack so deflected deals no damage and has no other effect (instead treat it as a miss). You do not expend an action when using this feat, but you must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed."
This now specifies that deflecting the attack counts as a miss.
So the question is, how does Crane Riposte now interact with Snake Fang, assuming that I am a Monk of Many Styles with Combat Reflexes?
Crane Riposte:
"You take only a –1 penalty on attack rolls for fighting defensively. Whenever you use Crane Wing to deflect an opponent’s attack, you can make an attack of opportunity against that opponent after the attack is deflected."
Snake Fang:
"While using the Snake Style feat, when an opponent's attack misses you, you can make an unarmed strike against that opponent as an attack of opportunity. If this attack of opportunity hits, you can spend an immediate action to make another unarmed strike against the same opponent."
Both allow you to make an attack of opportunity against the miss. However, we must then refer to the rules on attack of opportunities.
Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity:
"If you have the Combat Reflexes feat, you can add your Dexterity bonus to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn't count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus."
It stats that you may only take on attack of opportunity for each opportunity that presents itself.
However, it then specifies that, if they provoke two attack of opportunities from you, you can make both. In this case, one attack of opportunity is provoked because the attack was deflected, while the other because the opponent missed.
At my table, I would most likely rule that, even though two attack of opportunities are provoked, only one may be taken because I would consider an attack which missed, a SINGLE opportunity.
Thoughts?
P.S. if any Paizo staff are reading this, the PRD was edited incorrectly. The new Crane Wing rule has been put under Crane Riposte, and Crane Wing left unmodified.
