Rise of the Runelords was originally written for Dungeons and Dragons 3.5, so it's designed for books and mechanics from that system. In this case, MM is "Monster Manual". You can use the equivalent monsters in the Pathfinder Bestiary, in the cases that they appear there, but the page references will be off (and other mechanical changes will have occurred.)
I've thought a lot about this over the years, because I have a very similar point of view regarding player agency, but I don't think I'd be able to do much better than this post on The Alexandrian. In particular, it links to several series that are extremely well written synopses of non-linear and reactive adventure design. |
