Perception 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23 Feeling a little better at having one of his allies surveying from a high vantage point, Nolan does his best to portray himself as the professional soldier that he should act like, trying not to show the excitement he feels at trying to infiltrate the baron's keep. Nolan will also cast longstrider before leaving the inn room.

Considers things for a minute. Well, we could approach him as concerned travelers. You've already established yourselves as caravan guards, so you could try and get close to him by offering your services as extra militia. If I also offer up my services as a "priest" of Abadar, it might strengthen our position. Speaking of being a priest... He pauses, and stands up straighter, saluting the group. Reconnaissance officer Nolan Jerek. Just so there isn't any confusion, I'm not actually an ordained priest. I suppose you could call me a city druid. I wouldn't want you to think there was something I should be able to do as a priest at some critical moment. I specialize in urban scouting. I can heal a little bit, I'm trained to fight, and I specialize in defensive tactics. I look forward to serving with all of you on this mission.

I believe finding out exactly what information the captain is privy too, and where is sympathies lie, is our best bet for dealing with the baron. If he is no friend of the baron's, then he may be willing to help remove him from power once he finds out he's selling the town out to the enemy.

Nolan would switch out of his priestly vestments and into his regular equipment at this point, pulling out a piece of parchment with some notes he had taken concerning his opinion of the town as per his assignment. His manner, although still friendly, is much more professional now that they are all in private rooms. Well, here's what we know. One: The baron wishes to hand over control of the town to the enemy. What we don't know, is why he wishes to do that. Of the possibley reasons, the three most viable would be that he was bribed, he is being controlled, or he's been replaced by someone with the ability to impersonate him. Along with stopping him, we should also determine which of these, if any, is the reason behind his betrayal. He would flip to the next page, taking a breath and then continuing on. Second issue: We don't know how much information he's provided to the captain downstairs concerning the two converging forces. As the captain stated, one force is coming to attack, another to defend. However, as we know the baron is a traitor, it is possible that our forces will be labled the hostile force, and the enemy will be labled as the back up. This would pose a very large problem for our own troops, as the goal of this mission is to reinforce the town without harming the civilians and loyal soldiers already here. So, we need to determine what amount of information the captain knows, and wither or not he is going to be an ally or a potential problem. He looks around, pausing to see the reactions of the rest of the group so far. Any questions so far?

Nolan would chuckle slightly at the elf's comment. Well, I do find a lot of thing's interesting. It's why I travel so much, you see. Perhaps we can talk about some of these interests somewhere a little more comfortable then at the bar? If you've a table, I would gladly sit with you.

Nolan continues talking idly with either the barkeep, or one of the nearby soldiers, being a very polite and pleasant conversationalist. Depending upon how long he's been at the tavern, he would have tried to find out the generalized opinions of the soldiers from whatever the barkeep has overheard, giving him a bit of monetary compensation if it seems that the barkeep is slightly put off by his looking like a priest. I haven't really added any money from the split myself, and I already bought myself some CMW pots, along with a few other useful potions. And it isn't really that odd for people who don't really know eachother to pool resources for a mission. After all, if you want to look at it from a more selfish perspective, giving money to a group fund to buy items in the short term makes the likelyhood of achieving a large pay off once the mission is completed. Thus, strangers might be enticed to pool money to buy items for the group at large, even if they might not normally do so. |
