Heart of the Slums: Humans who eke out a life in a city's teeming slums must be quick and clever. They gain a +2 racial bonus on Sleight of Hand and Stealth checks, and a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks in urban and underground settings. In addition, they may roll twice when saving against disease, taking the better roll. This racial trait replaces skilled.

Rogue Archetype: Sczarni Swindler
Brawler Archetype: None

Let Fate Decide (Ex): At 1st level, the swindler can declare two different actions that rely on different types of rolls or checks, such as attacking a creature (an attack roll) or sneaking past the same creature (a Stealth check). As a standard action, the swindler then uses a random method to choose one of the declared activities, such as flipping a coin, rolling a die, or drawing a harrow card. The specific method doesn’t matter as long as there is an equal chance of either activity being chosen.

If the swindler then performs the chosen activity within the next round, she gains a luck bonus on the roll type required for that activity—attack rolls with a specific weapon, a specific skill check, a specific ability check, or a specific saving throw—equal to half her rogue level (minimum +1) for 1 minute. If the swindler performs any other action (whether declared or not) in the round after using this ability, she becomes shaken for 1 minute instead. The swindler can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Charisma modifier.

This ability replaces trapfinding.

Quicker Than the Eye (Ex): At 2nd level, when the swindler uses Sleight of Hand, creatures take a penalty on their Perception checks equal to half the swindler’s class level to notice the attempt. The swindler also reduces the normal –20 penalty by an amount equal to her class level when attempting a Sleight of Hand check as a move action instead of as a standard action.
Lastly, the swindler can draw hidden weapons or objects from her person as a move action instead of the usual standard action.

This ability replaces evasion.

Poker Face (Ex): At 3rd level, the swindler gains a +1 bonus on Bluff, Profession (gambler), and Sense Motive checks. This bonus increases by 1 for every 3 levels beyond 3rd. The swindler can also attempt to feint against non-humanoid targets without penalty, though she still takes a –8 penalty on feint attempts against creatures with animal intelligence and she cannot feint against mindless creatures.

This ability replaces trap sense.

No Fool (Ex): At 4th level, the swindler gains a +1 bonus on Will saving throws. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 levels beyond 4th (to a maximum of +5 at 20th level).

This ability replaces uncanny dodge.

Background:

Nikolai was born to a troop of Varisian wanderers somewhere near the southwestern edges of Ustalav. Raised primarily by the troop at large, Nikolai never knew his mother -- she died in childbirth.

He spent his earliest years traveling with the Varisians before his father, handsomest man in the troop and infamous as a drunk and card-cheat, lost his life after being caught cheating at cards by a band of river pirates. The pirates, not wishing to linger too long, simply grabbed the boy and informed him he was their newest deckhand. It was his 11th birthday.

Nikolai's time plying the waterways of the River Kingdoms with the pirates was not, surprisingly, as horrible as one might expect. They were hard men, and could be cruel, but by no means irredeemably evil. That being said, one beating too many convinced Nicki to jump ship at the first opportunity -- but not before gutting the man who'd killed his father with the pirate's own knife. It had been more than a year and a half but they'd finally pulled into port at a city large enough to get lost in -- Korvosa.

He spent the next two years "working" as a cutpurse, stealing for his bread -- occasionally cutting out the middle man entirely and just stealing the bread. After earning too much attention there, Niki skipped town for Riddleport. There, he soon caught the attention of a Sczarni crime boss and eventually began working as an enforcer with a local gang of thieves. For nearly a decade, Nikolai excelled in this life but, despite a certain talent for lethality and a flagrant disregard for laws, he didn't much care for the gangs' treatment of Riddleport's poorest citizens.

One night he crept into the storerooms of the gang, took everything he could carry, fenced it (with a pang of conscience for the unsuspecting -- albeit not wholly innocent -- pawnbroker who likely would be in a great deal of trouble once the goods were traced back), stole the nicest horse he could find and skipped town.

He's been on the run from one thing or another the past few years and claims to be wanted by local watches, thieves guild enforcers and bounty hunters across Varisia.

Of course, he's also a habitual liar and so it's debatable how much of his story is true, although it's true enough that more than one tavern has a permanent ban on a certain gold-tooth-sporting, mustachioed gypsy with a crooked grin. One thing about Nicky is certain though, with a knife in his hands, Nikolai is a very, very dangerous man.
