BACKGROUND

Spoiler:
Ngozi is a short, ugly little man who walks with the rolling, bow legged stride of a long time sailor. His rich brown skin is covered with ritualistic scars mixed with an odd assortment of gaudy gold earrings and other bejeweled piercings. He still carries a short, straight spear and a long wooden blowgun, holdovers from his earlier life in the Mwangi Expanse, but he has since picked up and practiced using a large crossbow.

Ngozi once lived in the great ruins of Mzali, deep in the Mwangi Expanse. He was taken from his home years ago when he was captured by another tribe and sold to the slavers of Bloodcove, and from there he was sent, bound in chains with other captives, north to fight and die in the pits for the entertainment of civilized men. Fortunately for Ngozi, the ship was attacked by pirates as it travelled north, and while the entire crew and most of the slaves served only to feed the sharks after the battle, Ngozi’s ability to speak a little Taldane allowed him to beg for his life, trading his future slavery amongst the nobles of the north for a life of slavery to the pirates who spared his life. For 6 years Ngozi served aboard the pirate cutter Besmara’s Blade, until recently the Blade was sunk near Riddleport whilst it was attempting to overtake a Shadde-Quah wavecutter. After boarding the vessel, both ships were attacked from below, but by what Ngozi has no idea. He was knocked unconscious by the Blade’s falling mast, and only has memories of the water being filled with teeth and blood. When he awoke, he was drifting towards the shore south of Riddleport, still entangled with the mast which nearly crushed him yet somehow saved his life.

Since his brush with death, Ngozi has become convinced that both the Mzali child-god, Walkena, and the Pirate Queen Besmara, have blessed him with good fortune. He found his way into Riddleport and now seeks to earn enough coin to purchase passage south. He recently heard about the gambling tournament that is to be held at Saul Vancaskerkin’s Gold Goblin from Ruben Carfay, the leader of the temple of Besmara, with whom he has quickly become friends. It was Carfay that suggested that Ngozi put his new found luck to good use and enter the tournament, and was kind enough to put up the entrance fee in exchange for swapping stories over a few drinks.
