About Mugen Dirac

Physical Description: Lean with tone muscles. Medium length brown hair worn unkempt. Dresses plainly and would blend into a crowd except for the fire in his eyes. Animated in his movements and brazen in his outlook, Mugen could almost said to be manic

Background: Mugen grew up poor. A common tale for the people of his home, a land of broad class divisions separating the very rich from the very poor. The wealthy occupied all positions of power through right of birth or liberal application of coin, and few cared for the plight of the working class. Mugen managed, through a combination of luck and charisma, to gain the favor of a local dwarven blacksmith by the name Darlo as a young lad. When he became of age Darlo took him on as an apprentice and his family for the first time in memory began to hope that their situation might improve, even a little. Thus at the age of 14 he began his studies. When he was 16 he met Lilith, a sweet tempered girl whom Mugen was immediately smitten with. Two years later Darlo ended Mugen apprenticeship and hired him on as a full time smithy. Feeling high spirited Mugen took this good news and built on it by asking Lilith to be his wife. They were married shortly thereafter and Darlo allowed them to rent a small apartment adjoining his shop at a discounted rate as a wedding gift. So their lives together began, and what followed were two years of bliss.

One evening Mugen was returning home from a friends who had been holding a new years party. Lilith had remained home as she had been feeling the beginnings of a cold coming on. As he passed by the shop he noticed the front door was slightly ajar. It had the habit of sliding open if one didn't close it just right. Fearing he had forgot to lock up in his haste to get to the party he entered to make sure everything was all right. He immediately noticed that the lock on the door had been forced open and the place had been ransacked. He took this all in in a moment and was considering going for the town guard when he heard muffled voices coming from behind the door that connected his apartment to the shop! Upon pressing his ear to the door he discerned two male voices arguing. It appeared that the thieves had not banked on Lilith being sick and had expected the place to be empty. Mugen slid the door open a crack to access the situation and see if his wife was alright. She lay unconscious at their feat, tied and gagged but clearly alive. Fear jumbled his thoughts, should he take one of the weapons in the shop and try and scare them off, or run and get the town guard. He stood there paralyzed by indecision for what felt like ages, but in reality couldn't have been longer than a minute. Finally he resolved to take a weapon and defend his wife and home himself. Having never actually trained with a weapon he decided that the nearby warhammer would be best, just aim and smash. As he picked it up however the arguing in the next room rose in pitch, punctuated by a loud thud. A cold sweat broke out on Mugen's forehead and he hastily made his was back to the door. Sliding it open again he was greeted with the sight of one of the thugs whipping a red liquid off his sword, liquid the same color as the pool that was beginning to grow around his wife. Mugen slowly slid down the wall beside the door, unable to accept what the has just seen. In his daze he dropped his warhammer, a noise the thieves would surely have noticed had they not been preoccupied with the body before them. He remained where he was until the men left his apartment, using his back door. Had they decided to leave through the shop he likely would not have even had the mental capacity remaining to defend himself.

That day left him a broken man. He fell to drinking. But out of the ensuing dark depression a resolve was formed. He would never hesitate again. If he had not took that minute to debate between fetching the guard or attacking himself, Lilith might still be with him. Slowly he began to climb his way out of the mental hell he lived in. He decided to go on a pilgrimage to find his place in the world. He took what remained of his money and purchased (at a discounted price) the very warhammer he had held in his hands that night, for protection on the road and to serve as a reminder to never hesitate. Thanking Darlo for everything he had done he set out on his journey.

Alone, traveling the countryside, he had lots of time to think, and slowly a feeling within him began to grow. He began to see what happened to him and his wife in a broader context. The despots who ruled his country cared not for people like him. They benefited from the labors of the meek and rewarded them with cruelty and poverty. The violence which had visited him that night was a symptom of a corrupt political system. Yet it wasn't until he heard of the Andorans that he even fathomed the notion that something could be done about it. When he first heard of their fight to bring democracy to totalitarian governments he immediately knew this was his purpose.
