WHAT CLAN DOES YOUR CHARACTER BELONG TO?
While Aki is nominally a member of the Unicorn clan, he is as close to an exile as to a Samurai. His immediate family has always kept the traditions of the Burning Sands alife. They might have overdone things a bit with him, though - he is just as close to rejecting Rokugani culture entirely as he is to doing his part in its protection, even though it keeps him close to the top of the social pyramid.
HOW WOULD OTHERS DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER’S APPEARANCE?
Aki is a bit of a pretty boy. Despite all his desert nomad ambitions, he keeps himself in excellent shape, spends a lot of time grooming himself and his beard is his pride and joy.
He is relatively small, has straight dark hair which he braids into several smaller strands, and a traditional beard which he ties off just below his chin.
IS YOUR CHARACTER A BUSHI, SHUGENJA, MONK, OR COURTIER?
He is a Bushi, but could probably as easily (or hardly) fit into a raiding horde. He is just cultured enough to stay in the good graces of his elders sufficiently not to be exiled proper, but likely never will manage to climb the political ladder without strong favorable circumstances.
WHAT FAMILY DOES YOUR CHARACTER BELONG TO?
He is a member of the Moto who returned to the Empire at the beginning of the Totori dynastiy. The traditions of the Moto still runs very strong in his family, and he is just slightly more extreme in his views thn his parents, particularly his mother.
WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S MAIN MOTIVATION?
Aki has three major loves: Woman, freedom, and his horse, Aisha. He loves to experience new things, and generally tries to avoid any serious commitments. If pushed, he would do anything to preserve the relative freedom he enjoys on his pilgrimage.
WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTERS GREATEST STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS?
Aki is, as much as he tries to downplay it, relatively competent. He tries hard not to let it show, but he is a good fighter, as brave as most samurai, and knows the ins and outs of both the desert and several cities.
His weakness is his denial of his own roots. He is more Rokugani than he would admit to, and more than he believes, to. He is more concerned denying these roots than actually breaking free of them.
WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER THINK OF BUSHIDO?
He thinks it constraining, even though he keeps on following its tenets. He would cheerfully point out any single foible in each of the tenets code while following them at the same time.
WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S OPINION OF HIS OWN CLAN?
He would like to see them return to their nomadic ways, and would sooner raid the empire for his spoils than stand in its defense - or so he would claim in like-minded company. Privately, when the mask is off his face, he is less sure.
IS YOUR CHARACTER MARRIED?
Aki is betrothed to a young courtier of the Ide family. The two get along relatively well, considering their very different outlooks. Once he returns from his pilgrimage, he is set to marry her. They both expect it to be a smooth union, with him overlooking her political maneuvers and her his frequent slipups with woman beneath his station.
DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE ANY PREJUDICES?
Ironically enough, he considers Rokugani culture effete, ineffective in some ways, and hypocritical in others. Half of it is an act, but he would not give a poet or courtier nearly the same amount of esteem as a Matsu Berserker or one of his clansmen.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S MOST AND LEAST FAVORITE THINGS?
He likes spicy foods, most of them traditionally not native to the Emerald Empire. He is particular fond of red meats, a social impossibility anywhere but Unicorn and Crab territories. He also enjoys the wide open vistas of the burning sands, and the soft touches of a woman.
His least favorite thing is court. The few times he had to attend it, he took care not to speak, and his appearance made sure none of the other attendants had a strong desire to do so, either.
HOW WOULD YOUR CHARACTER'S PARENTS DESCRIBE HIM?
While they are proud of him, and would never publicly move against him, his parents are concerned about him, since they know his behavior will soon cause trouble as he grows out of any youthful indulgences he still enjoys. Offering the pilgrimage to him is their way of offering him time to come to terms with their new home - or disappear without too much fuss raised.
HOW RELIGIOUS IS YOUR CHARACTER?
He pays some service to his ancestors, and knows a few quotable phrases from the Tao, but all in all, he has yet to discover the spiritual side of life in any significant way. He is not so much an active heretic as being dangerously uninterested in the world beyond the mundane.
IF YOU COULD, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR CHARACTER?
Aki, if you continue along this path you're on, it will end in tears. Either become a real Gaijin, or a proper Samurai, but you're not going to be able to keep the two sides balanced for much longer. Pick a side and stay with it.
