Once upon a time, there was a peaceful gnome village at the edge of Sanos forest. They lived in harmony with nature and her fluffy animals. Then the Andoran lumberjacks came, turning the animals into furs and cutting down the forest. Desperate times called for desperate measures. The gnomes of one small village in Sanos forest had resorted to calling one of their brethren to awakening the forest fauna to assist them in defending their beloved forest from lumberjacks. Mort and his family were some of those animals awakened. The gnomes had trained them as scouts, as mounts for their war against humans. Mort was on one such scouting foray when his gnome was shot off saddle. Mort killed the humans that did it, but found that his gnome was dead. A raven, impressed by his combat prowess, flew down and offered to teach him..."some things" in return for a share of his kills. 2 humans were quite a lot to eat, so he agreed to the raven's bargain, and it seemed that something in his mind was unlocked. As he ate, he smelt smoke from the gnome village, and returned to find it up in flames. There were no survivors, only charred remains of gnome, animal, and human corpses. The rest of the awakened animals were nowhere to be seen. Mort hung around the village wreck for several days, hoping that some other gnomes or awakened animals would come and look for their brethren, but alas, none did. Feeling betrayed by the gnomes and the rest of the awakened animals, he tried to look for the perpetrators of the crime, but by then the trail was cold. Realizing that he was now alone in this world, he left the wreckage of the gnome village. Life in the wild however, was not particularly stellar. There was insufficient food, no belly rubs and scratches behind the ears, and lots of human hunters to avoid. He set out away from Sanos forest to make a new life for himself.

Secret:

Mortimer has issues going near burning buildings, and setting things on fire up close. Its a good question on where that fear came from. Is it due to his past home being burnt down, or some animal instinct?

Interesting note:

Mortimer is perfectly literate, can speak in complete sentences, and is far smarter then the average human, who would unfortunately, view him as a nice fur rug. However, he does not know about goblin taboos on reading and writing, so he will brag his knowledge when the first opportunity shows up.
