BACKGROUND
Mordecai Azwell is used to being quiet. A librarian in the service of Irori, Mordecai reads and writes more often than he speaks. 7 days a week he can be found studying ancient texts on arcane and the planes, history and nobility, or local legend. What few words he does pass out are often answers to questions about his father, Jameson Azwell.
Mordecai’s father is everything he is not. Fit and strong, outgoing and adventurous, a collector of knowledge instead of an overseer of it, Jameson has long been a bright and shining star in the local Irori faith. He has traveled to Osiron in search of ancient pyramids and walked proud in the Land of the Linnorm Kings; Mordecai has never left the city of Korvosa.
Adding to Mordecai’s introverted nature is his growing doubt in his faith. Irori preaches knowledge and self-perfection; Mordecai has the knowledge part down, but he compared to the other monks and priests he is sorely lacking in the physical discipline department. This is especially embarrassing when colored under the dazzling legend that his father is. Mordecai still finds faith and solace in Irori, but doubts if he is worthy of belonging to such a church.
The one light of his life is the study of arcane theory and magic. Mordecai has read and re-read every tome the library has to offer regarding magic, planes, and sorcery. He has at times thought about seeking out a mentor to teach him more of the arcane but has so far avoided doing so.
Hook: Jameson has recently developed an interest in the criminal mind. In hopes of writing a comprehensive text and adding to Irori’s knowledge, Jameson has infiltrated the Korvosan underground. He had been keeping in touch with his son and the clergy via letters; his current communication is two weeks overdue and his last letter mentioned his concern regarding a despicable gent named Gaedren Lamm.
