Her spear going wide of the mark first time around, Arla then tries again, stabbing desperately at the large slimy toad-creature. The toad obviously tastes unpleasant, as Ash is unable to maintain his bite-hold on the creature, releasing after a few moments. Arla's attack: 1d20+2 = 19, Damage: 1d8+1 = 8
Yeah, I definitely want to expand a lot on the NPCs this time, particularly in Riddleport. I felt that was one of the things I didn't do so well last time, and I'd really like my players to get a feel for the city. I'll probably try to add a lot of extra stuff in while the PCs are employed for Saul. Incidentally, did anyone have PCs that turned Saul's offer of work down?
Hi all, After a discussion last weekend, I've been talked into possibly running Second Darkness in a month or two. While I'm reading up on the AP, I was wondering if anyone who has already run the path has any general advice for it. I did run about half of Rise of the Runelords a while back, and found that there were a few issues that came up in it that weren't immediately obvious to me beforehand (being a relatively inexperienced DM). I'm hoping to at least partly avoid this this time. Is there anything I should be watching out for in Second Darkness?

A friend actually bought me 'Founding' for Christmas - I'm about 2/3s of the way through it just now. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing. I usually don't expect tie-in books to be up to much, but Abnett's a good writer.

Montalve, I managed to totally miss the comment you left for me on dA - I haven't checked my page for a little while. I don't have facebook, so didn't see the preview, but it sounds like the fanzine was awesome! :D
There are a few new rumours for 40k that have come from the Gamesday in Spain. Apparently, Blood Angels and Black Templar codices are in the works right now, Tyranids and Necrons are also currently in the works. Dark Eldar are still at least a year away - probably more as Jes Goodwin hasn't finished the models yet. (From Bell of Lost Souls) Hope the DE players get some awesome model updates when the codex finally comes out - you guys have been waiting an age. I'm a bit biased, but I'm hoping the tyranid codex will be fairly soon. The plastic trygon rumours look rather cool, and I'm hoping that tyranid CC will be given a tweak to make it more effective (to me, tyranids should be all about claws and teeth in close combat, but it seems they aren't just now.. :( )

I do - it looks awesome :) Quick progress update - sketch with details is done and I'm partway through the shading now. Will hopefully have something by the weekend for you.

I have started working on a sketch - need to fix some problems with it and tidy up/add details still, but I think I have a basic pose down. (Unfortunately, I can't look at the one you linked just now, but I shall when I get home. :) )

Interestingly, the current trend on 40k forums seems to be to avoid hormagaunts as they're apparently not as valuable for points. I think I'm inclined to at least try using hormie broods though, as I like the way they look. As far as regular gaunts go, I was thinking of making them super-cheap spinegaunts and as you say, using them to shield other units so that they can make it across the board. I'm struggling to decide what to do with my carnifex and my (new present! :D) hive tyrant. I may try to magnetise the 'fex as per this guide if I'm feeling brave once I reach him in the modelling queue. It's a rather cool idea. :D
As far as I know, the stats in the chaos daemons book can't be used with the chaos space marines army - they get a generic statline for summoned daemons, and that's it. That's one of the things that put me off doing a 40k chaos army. I may be wrong though - I'm not an expert on the 40k rules unfortunately. :(

Try Joe Abercrombie's 'The First Law' trilogy. The first book is called 'The Blade Itself'. There is some humour in it - moreso than A Song of Ice and Fire - but a lot of it is very dark, and fits well. Lots of violence and intrigue, and some very well written characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

Ah, I didn't realise it was a two weapon fighting style. I tried googling the speciality, and found that a sayf (saif) is basically a scimitar, but that's all I found on it. :)
I saw this film yesterday, and I have to say, I really liked it. In my opinion, the major change that was made still worked very well, and I can understand why it was made. I particularly liked how Dr Manhattan and Rorshach turned out - they were very much like how I had imagined them while reading the GN. :) With regards to Dr. Manhattan's nudity, I would have been disappointed had they censored him. I think it's an important part of showing his detachment from humanity - he just doesn't see the point in clothing as we do. Additionally, there seems to be a general acceptance for a lot of violence in films, but as soon as there's any nudity (particularly male nudity), there's an outcry. It just seems odd to me. However, saying that, I do agree on thinking that the US rating for the film seems a little odd, given its general content. Here in the UK, it's rated for over-18s only, which I think is the right choice. Just my two cents, and another vote for the film being awesome. :)
Think I'm going to go for Assassin Slayer of the Caliphate Guard subfaction (the LBS page has details for the slayer class, so I should be able to use that). I'll need to make some minor tweaks to the original concept I had, but I think it will work. I also think I'm probably going to go for the 'Faction Agent' trait - I think it fits best. I'll start working on my character sheet sometime today - just have a couple of questions. Are the skills mostly the same as those in the L5R book? If not, are there any important skills I should be aware of? Additionally, do the factions get an ability bonus as well as the class-specific bonus as in L5R? If so, what is the Assassin faction's one? Thanks! :D
DM Shisumo wrote:
It does, thanks. I'm thinking probably either the first or the third faction, but I'll need to think on which would be a better fit for what I have in mind :) I'll get back to you on this.

Whoops, missed the 'since she's dead' part when I asked about the driving reasons behind the assassins. This changes my question to whether there are now any 'codes' that the assassins follow now, or if it's pretty much 'anything goes'?
I think I'm leaning towards an assassin. I'm guessing that in LBS, the assassins are motivated by similar reasons as their real-life counterparts - i.e. mostly politics, and what they perceive to be greed and corruption? At the moment, I'm thinking of attempting a Scorpion-esque character - charming and smooth talking on the outside, but much colder and calculating on the inside - particularly when dealing with a target. For motivation, she would have a blind (and most likely flawed) belief in the idea that she is a necessary weapon that is used to make the world a better place - similar to the Operative's belief in Serenity. Would this be fitting, or should I have a rethink? Also, could you give a little more information on the assassin factions you mentioned in the first post? I couldn't find any information on them online.
Hm.. trying to decide on how best to spend the XP. I know I definitely want to put 1 point into Etiquette and 1 point into Athletics (Given her athletics performance in the module, I think she should be taking at least one point in this :-p) My current thought is to put one point each into two of Courtier, Hunting or Go - I'm just not sure which two to go for yet. I know this means Yukari's insight rank won't change, but I feel she should have a slightly better skill spread than she currently does.
I'd also like to join, although as I said on the discussion thread, I don't have a copy of the LBS book at the moment, and it's likely to be a couple of weeks before I can buy any new books :(. If this wouldn't be an issue, I'd love to play. Was looking at the various factions on the LBS site/L5R wiki, and the Yotodai, Senpet and Assassins all look rather interesting :)

Spoiler: Ah, cool. Yukari was indeed one move away from drawing on Chigitsu. :) That's fine - I was trying to interpret the Brash disadvantage as being sensitive to attacks on her honour more than hot-tempered. I just wasn't sure if that was ok or not. In that case, I'll leave things as they are, keep Irreproachable and use the xp to buy the skills :) Thanks!

Of course :D. I only own the L5R 3eR book at the moment in any case, but I think I'd certainly like to at least lurk around this game if there are no spaces left. :) I'd love to see how the AP turns out with the setting and system.
Andrew Turner wrote: Generally speaking, the Warhammer novels are a cut above; not your typical tie-in books. I suggest Abnett's 40k Eisenhorn books. If you're looking for dark fantasy, try his Malus Darkblade books. Dan Abnett is the kind of writer who crafts scenes you will fondly remember years from now. I was planning on looking for the Eisenhorn books once I'd finished with the Gaunt's Ghosts books. :) I'll add Malus Darkblade to the list to check out as well.
