I have a genius idea for making an effective character. First, we'll take a 3/4 BAB class and hand them a tower shield. Then we'll accept that we can't contribute at all if we're not flanking, and immediately take a prestige class that makes us unable to move.

Excuse me, I'll refrain from posting a Tank in a topic that wants Tanks.

James,

Huge fan, loved I'll just say "Red Hand" and the Dragon Empires is the greatest Campaign setting of all time! I love playing dwarves, and I'm wondering, will dwarves fit nicely into the game, or will I have to think outside the box entirely and play a dual nunchuk wielding ulfen samurai from Kalasgard?

I've been in a couple of the AP's and I think that Legacy of Fire would be PERFECT. It doesn't coddle the player with morality, it's mostly about freedom and taking life as it comes. Not to sound like a broken record, but the Arabian knights theme will work great for the little tykes!

Why hasn't anyone thought of this yet? Half-Orc Lvl 1 Ftr/ Everything else Rouge. Ok, get this, Wear Full Plate and Wield the Biggest melee weapon that you can (If your GM will allow it, Monkey Grip is written into pathfinder now so you only take a minus 2 for wielding a two-handed weapon in one hand)
"Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can't make optimum use of a weapon that isn't properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn't proficient with the weapon, a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies."
Next, USE A TOWER SHIELD. Ok, so now you're thinking, "How do I sneak attack, Munch?" Using the frontline fighter in tandem, you can position yourself in flanking position. Now let's add up some dam damage! 1d6 Sneak attack for lvl 1 rouge, let's say +1d12 for a great axe, and +3 Strength Damage (a 16 isn't hard to attain with the point buy system). You're looking at 5-21 damage every time you flank! How's you AC look? Let's say you have a 13 Dex, not difficult to get. 9 FP+4 TS+ 1 Dex and get Dodge as a bonus feat for a +1 and add 10 and you get: 25 AC at level 2! If you spend any points on con you can get some more HP, but I would instead get combat expertise (14 Str +2 Race mod, 13 Dex and 13 int cost 11 points in total) and now you're getting a +1 to your ac. Fight defensively and your total armor class is 28! You won't have the "Damage per turn" that a twf rouge can get, but you'll have loads of staying power (don't forget Orc ferocity!). You'll have a super low touch ac (12 :() but you're practically rouge proof (ff AC=23!). You could multiclass into Stalwart defender and then you're unstoppable!!!!!!

The Paizo folx have said they intend to use more myths and base the monsters closer to the myths or try to capture some of the feeling from the myths. So far I think they are doing that real well. I have the feeling they will keep doing so.
I'm glad to hear that. A lot of the gaming industry seems have gotten to the point that they wanted to pretend that their monsters weren't inspired by other sources, which is silly. People WANT things like actual Tengu in their games.
Kobolds are still nothing like they are in folk lore and myth.
I think in some cases, D&D has created it's own myth and lore. Goblins and kobolds fall under this. Yeah, kobolds are nothing like their germanic roots, but I think most games and fantasy sources now draw more from the D&D-ism then they do the actual folklore.

I agree. Most rpg monsters are inspired by their legacy in table top games. Besides, Orcs are completely based off of Tolkien myth, for if they weren't then they would be demons (i. e. Orcus).

Because, while I don't have a LotR replica, I DO have a Large (about 32 inches to the guard) "Badger Blade" (google if you want to check out their web site). I've used it to smash figure-8 concrete building blocks apart without denting the edge, much less snapping the blade in half.

I ask you to clarify, and provide a detailed description of my own experience, because it's important.

My sword is hard to swing around for an extended period of time, but I'm not exactly a professional soldier. That said, holding it in my hands and swinging it around, I can say with confidence that if I were a professional soldier who spent hours every day for months training to use the weapon, I could do so for a long period of time.

A proper battle-ready sword is made from Carbon Spring Steel, and requires regular polishing to keep it from rusting. A proper battle-ready sword is also balanced, to the point that I can take my 32 inch sword, put it on the narrow top of a dining room chair at about an inch from the hilt, and it balances perfectly, like a teeter-totter.

I feel the need to make a few quick point before addressing the thread topic, in order to foster a greater understanding of the subject matter:

1)Badger Blades are a poor comparison to movie swords in terms of being 'real swords'. They may be very durable, but there are many swords for similar prices that should be vastly superior in terms of handling.

2)The balance of real swords depends on many factors, such as: blade profile taper, blade thickness taper, handle length, and pommel weight. The placement of the center of gravity is not terribly important, and will vary based on blade design. A CoG of 1" is usually a tip-off that your blade is poorly balanced. (It usually comes from the maker giving the sword waayyy more pommel than it needs)

3) 32" is about average size for a Medieval or Renaissance one-handed sword, not large.

Now, on to the...

This is a bit off topic, but in Fellowship, the elves with the curved bladed "katana-things" my brother and i called them oh so long ago, were swung from their right side in a vertical circular arc. They were sort of spun using the leverage from your bottom hand to generate momentum. Maybe that's how they are supposed to be used? I always thought it was just a fancy title for a O-Tachi.
