About Merisiel Scaeva

Merisiel Scaeva
Tiefling (Chelaxian Erinyes-Spawn Half-Elf) Alchemist (Preservationist) 1 Advanced Race Guide, Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic

Raised in an ancient Bridgefront brothel by her Elven mother, Amrunelara, who was full of stories, her old life in Kyonin, the monstrous Treerazer, the Elven Gods as well as Calistria, who held a special place as a goddess of both Elves and prostitutes; Merisiel was always curious about her father because of how different she was from the other whores' daughters. That was the only story Amrunelara wouldn't tell. As a young child, Merisiel begged all of her mother's friends to spill until she believed that even Amrunelara didn't know. That was before Gaedren's offer. The owner of the house owed Gaedren a favor which was cashed in when the slaver received a lucrative offer from a decrepit old merchant with unusual taste. Merisiel fit the bill. Before then, she had never sold herself, her mother ensured that there was no need and even saved money for Merisiel to bring her back to Kyonin when she died, but Gaedren's offer was irresistible. He had offered her the name of her father and a chance to meet him. All she had to do was please the client, who would provide her with the information when he was satisfied. The job was worse then she expected, he was the most repulsive man Merisiel had ever met, somehow worse then Gaedren. He paid when they were done. Her father's name was Petronicus Thrune-Scaeva and his funeral was the next day. Enraged, Merisiel left the house to cry and beg for guidance from Calistria at the Temple of Many. There, she met Esmerelda, a Varisian Gnome priestess who advised her that the experience with the merchant was as far from lust as sex can be. Together they decided three things. First, she would attend her father's service. Second, she would never return to the house or speak to the mother that failed to protect her. Third, she would kill Gaeden.

At the funeral were numerous old mages from the Academae. According to the eulogy, Petronicus was a gifted conjuror from a cadet branch of house Thrune. An Expert in planar binding, he coaxed many devils into sharing arcane secrets and information about the politics of Hell. A quick study and the daughter of such a gifted mage, Merisiel talked her way into an application for the Academae, the best place to learn more about her father. She spent three years doing chores for her mentor, praying to Calistria, and spending nights with Esmerelda with whom she worked as a Courtesan out of devotion. They always worked together to stay safe and committed. After two years Merisiel's mentor asked her to bring him Scaeva's Collected Bindings, Petronicus's magnum opus and instructed her not to read it. She disobeyed. The tome was full of descriptions, drawings, and names of the devils bound by her father and accounts of each binding. There was nothing of note to Merisiel, except for the entries on Vorsithia, an Erinyes first bound three years before her birth. Petronicus seemed more interested in Vorsithia's physical attributes than anything she could teach him about arcane magic or the outer planes. She was the same height as Merisiel, had the same small twisting horns and the same silvery eyes full of red clouds. Her final binding was the day before Merisiel was born. When she closed the book, she found herself in the street, without the book and with an understanding that if she ever walked into the Academae, or even cast a spell, she would be killed. The next day, she enrolled in University of Korvosa alchemy with no regrets.

GM Backstory:

1: The beginning of the campaign starts with the characters being brought together for their hatred of one man, Gaedren Lamm. You were all wronged by him in one way or another, either by being one of his "lambs" (forced child slaves/thieves) or by other reasons. You are so focused on your investigation, so what have you been doing on this front? Using your trait, how were you wronged and how do you see justice being brought to Lamm?

Gaedren told me that if I slept with an old man for him, he would help me meet my father. The client was awful and things happened that I wasn't comfortable with. Instead of a meeting with my father I was given directions to his funeral. That was years ago and now I've become a competent alchemist and have been asking around in Bridgefront with Esmerelda, my long term lover, for information about him. As a student, I haven't had much time to look for him but my faith in Calistria keeps me motivated. I believe that the only solution is killing him as painfully as possible. Trapping him with my infernal forebear, an Erinyes seems might be too lenient.

2b: Arcane Spellcasters, Wizards: Did you specialize and succeed at the Acadamae, or did you take the generalist approach at the Theumanexus College? Alchemists (Acadamae or University of Korvosa are great choices here). If you are a limited spellcaster, did you mix your training with something from 2a?

Expelled from the Academae, I was trained at University of Korvosa. I've always seen my studies as means to an end, a way to make a living and get the skills to take down Gaedren.

2c: Divine Spellcasters: Korvosans follow a number of deities, but Abadar, Sarenrae (healing aspect), Pharasma, Erastil and Gozreh tend to be most worshipped. Shelyn is worshipped, but has little influence in the city, and, of course, the Chelish citizens bring with them Asmodeus. There is a Temple of the Many, with 17 members of the pantheon being included.

I'm not a divine spellcaster, but I am an extremely devoted worshipper of Calistria and am involved with a priestess.

2d: Odd Races: especially Dhampir and Changelings: These races prove that the local area is dangerous, as their lineage shows activity of such creatures. Did you know your supernatural parent? Do you fully know what you are?

My father made a pact with an Erinyes named Vorsithia. I have never met her but I would enlist her help if given the opportunity.

3: Do you know anyone in the city or have any family in the city?

I live with my partner, Esmerelda and I know many faculty members and students at University of Corvosa. I don't get along with Dr. Bandobras, a halfling, my boss but we have a mutual respect of each other. I'm friends with many worshippers of Calistria, Sarenrae, Shelyn and Desna.

My mother is an Elven sex worker named Amrunelara but we're estranged.

4: Would you adventure after Gaedren is defeated? Why?

Yes, I want to protect people from men like him more than I want to be a scholar. I see my studies as a job, not a calling and my religious friends encourage me to do something more meaningful to me.

5: Who do you trust and why?

I trust Esmerelda implicitly. I love her. She's the only person I completely trust. My past has made trust difficult.

6: Do you have a family? If so, provide the known members of the family.

Mom: Amrunelara, sex worker in Bridgefront, we're estranged
Dad: Petronicus Thrune-Scaeva, a dead senior conjuror at the Academae
Demonic Forebear: Vorsithia, an Erinyes, I don't know of any appearances on the Material Plane since before I was born
Partner; Esmerelda, CG Oracle of Calistria, I live with her

7: What do you think of the elderly King Eodred and his Chelish Queen, the near-teen, flame-haired Ileosa? Do you think it is scandalous?

I don't like nobility but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the age difference. If they lust for each other that's fine with me. I worry that she was sold to him like Gaedren sold me.

8: What do you think of the minor bits of vigilantism? You know of the hero of the people (Blackjack) who is a masked Vigilante, but what do you think of his copycats and the villains that oppose them?

I support vigilantism. I don't see copycats as any worse than Blackjack, he just got started first. I hope that they don't get to Gaedren before I do. If I weren't a gorgeous six foot tall half-elf with horns, I might be a vigilante but I think I'm too recognizable and risking my life while I'm with Esmerelda would be selfish.

9: Sometimes you need to know someone, obviously your character cannot live in a bubble. So, make two contacts to know, pick one or two contacts from the below list.

I'm good friends with Lessilyn. I met her through Esmerelda who sometimes brings desperate orphans too her.

Dr. Bandobras, LN Alchemist, my boss

Bishop D'bear oversaw my father's funeral, but I don't know her very well.

Harrow Card/Roleplaying Sample:

Today was hard. I can't believe Bandobras sometimes. He never knows what he wants. You can't yell at someone for getting you a Goblin tooth if that's what you asked for. I don't get what's so obvious about that meaning Hobgoblin tooth. Ugh, at least there's no work tomorrow. I get to spend all day with Esmerelda! Thank you Lady of the Room. Thank you for helping me find such pleasure. I hope you find the same. May your enemies burn.

Merisiel arose, looking around the familiar shrine until she saw something unfamiliar. At her feet, was a Harrow Card. Everything was clear, vengeance would come to her tonight.

"Yes! Thank you Goddess"

She screamed but that wasn't out of the ordinary for Calistria's shrine.

I have to tell Esmerelda

The Tiefling started running, she was too excited to care about the attention she was bringing herself. Because of her unique appearance she was constantly catching stares anyways. Her thoughts sprinted faster than her feet. After more than twenty years it was time. The man responsible for hurting her would die tonight. Or, if not tonight it was progress nonetheless. Arriving at the one-room apartment she shared with her lover, she burst in the door. Esmerelda was in bed but awake, sitting up, evidently aware of the excitement shaking Merisiel's body. She spoke in Varisian.

"Merisiel, I haven't seen you so excited since we" She didn't get to finish her sentence.
"It's time"
"Time for?"
"It's time!" Merisiel was almost screaming again.
"Merisiel I know you love, me but you know that we can't be this loud outside of church or we'll be evi..." She was cut off again.
"It's time to kill that mons" This time it was Merisiel was cut off.
"Gaedren?"

Merisiel nodded with her whole body.

"How do you know?" The Gnome continued.
"The Lady spoke to me"
"What?, she speaks to me not"
"Did you hear me? I said she did"
"She speaks to me, that doesn't make any sense"
"She's capricious" Merisiel smiled, opening her mouth to lick her lips, revealing he pointed, elongated teeth. "When I finished my prayers there was a Harrow card"
"That doesn't sound like her"
"Shut up, you know I'm going, help me put my armor on"
"Fine. I can't believe I love you"
"You're excited for the chance to touch me"
"Be quiet, you need to get going"

Five minutes later, Merisiel was out the door. Hurrying to the townhouse.
