Background:
Memnosyne was born in Vauntil, in the Ustalavic province of Caliphas, or rather, that's where she was found. Her parents, owners of a small but successful inn, found her left one day on their doorstep. As they had no children, they decided to raise her as their own, and gave her the name Serra. Serra grew up in what is probably the happiest town in all of Ustalav. The town is blessed with sunshine, fresh air, and the almost constant aroma of flowers, grown in great gardens in local vineyards. Best of all, every year, Vauntil holds the Last Breath festival, a great competition where artisans, chefs, wine-makers, and others compete for top honors among the visiting nobility. As thrilling as the annual fete was, what really made Serra happy was the great body of water bordering the town, Lake Encarthan. At night, she would wander down by the docks, listening to the waves lapping along the shore, watching the longshoremen unloading cargo, and feeling the crisp air on her skin. She often dreamed of the day she would leave her home to travel the sea. Her life was altered one day at the age of 15 when she was on one of her walks. While she had always felt a fondness for the water, suddenly she felt something different, an undefinable pull... like her body was no longer under her control. She froze, paralyzed with fear. After that, all she remembers is darkness and a bone-numbing chill. When she came to, her parents were standing over her, smiling broadly, and blessing the gods that their daughter had awakened. Apparently, Serra had fallen into the lake, and been rescued by a local fishmonger. She was unresponsive when pulled out and lay in a coma for nearly a week. Despite her convalescence, she felt hale and hearty. That night when she slept, she dreamed, and remembered some of her experience. She remembered the call... the pull to the sea. She remembered falling, the splash of her body hitting the cold water. But she also remembered a voice in her head. "Now is not your time child. But you have a choice to make." As she turned in the water, she saw two women, one a beautiful Garundi woman in flowing robes, the other, a hideous female humanoid, a hag. Despite her revulsion, the creature seemed to have some sort of power over her, and she felt herself drifting toward it, like being caught in an under-tow. She struggled mightily, but to no avail. Just out of the hag's reach, she turned to the Garundi woman, and threw out her hand. The woman caught Serra's arm and enfolded her. When she awoke again, she knew what she had to do. She explained to her parent's that she had a near-death experience, and was contacted by Pharasma. In saving her life, Serra would dedicate her life to the goddess. (She left out the part about the hag.) Although it wasn't the life they had hoped for Serra, they were just glad she was alive, and understood. They sent her to the city of Caliphas where she would join an order of Pharasman clerics. While there, she decided that Serra was gone; from now on she would be Memnosyne. While training, she became aware of, and interested in, the group known as the Pathfinders. Seeing as they were an organization dedicated to the acquisition of knowledge, a pursuit blessed by Pharasma, her church was happy to send her as an ambassador to Absalom. She has spent the last few years working on building her reputation among the pathfinders and fulfilling whatever missions they deemed her worthy of. |
