Where most Strix are born free in the high peaks surrounding Devil's Perch, there are some who have become the slaves of Cheliax and the orders of Hell Knights that dominate their borders.  Some taken to Citadel Enferac and rarely ever seen again.  Marek was different, however.  Conceived and born in the citadel, Marek was raised by Signifers instead of Strix due to his unusually look being seen as a curse.
From what he could understand his birth was that of experimentation on Strix females.  Forcefully bred to produce children, the Hellknights would perform rituals and other experiments on them, trying to produce a less hostile Strix population, hoping to breed out aggression in the defiant species taking roost in their lands.  Instead they birthed countless horrors or mutants, most never living long enough to take their first breath.  Marek was different.
He was rejected by the Strix as another of the Hellknight abominations for his pale skin and white feathers.  A severe albinism of thier species is exceptionally rare, but the mutation from the experiments gave him more human features.  An actual nose and the ability to move his eyes, he was a freak to his own people.  The Signifers took this as a positive step in their work.  And while he would never pass as a human, he was not a true Strix to his people.
Rather than stay and be the focus of their scorn and the Hellknight's curiosity, he managed to escape into the wilds.  Not knowing where to go, he struck northward and never looked back.  He eventually found refuge, tired and alone, in a forest cave.  It was there he was discovered by a druid of the wood.  The passing druid took the weak boy in and helped him recover from his ordeal.  An orphan himself, the druid took it on himself to help raise the outcast.
In the years that came Marek would become a member of the druidic circle, acting as a courier for their interests between the northern and southern lands.  He only recently stopped outside Heldren to resupply before making the journey back to the northern circle.
