About Marcus Beto

Background:
I’ve reached my limit with these nobles.

Marcus slams his hand down onto the flat side of a blade resting on the table in front of him. The garlic clove hiding underneath the blade splatters underneath the force of his blow. Lifting the knife, he removes the peel from the garlic and begins to chop the mashed clove into miniscule pieces.

What about them is noble anyway? Certainly not the way they treat those who serve them. Sure, I receive plenty of praise for the meals I prepare. But one tiny mistake, and they treat me like a dog—worse, in fact.

A surprisingly tall man with close-cropped red hair, Marcus repeats the process over and over again. Slam, discard, chop, replace. Slam, discard, chop, replace.

What concerns me more, though, is what they’re doing to this great nation. They’re ruining it with their petty squabbles, their grabs for power, and their disregard for its people. Yes, that last is the most important. His mind is racing now, as if he’s finally able to put words to the thoughts that have been inside all along. The people, the common citizens, are what make Taldor great, and the nobles treat most of those people like scum unworthy of existence. We are the glory of Taldor, but they refuse to see it.

Marcus is so caught up in his thoughts now that he’s stopped preparing the garlic, now just holding the knife in one hand and staring blankly through the window in front of him.

But what am I willing to do to make a change? Do I play their games—lie and cheat my way to the top? Reaper of Reputation, guide me. Do I steal their gold, passing it to those who actually do the work? Gray Master, guide me. Or do I go farther? Am I willing to kill to save this great nation? Blackfingers, guide me.

Snapping back to reality, Marcus realizes that he’d stopped his task and reaches for another clove of garlic, his thoughts slowing. He had much to consider, especially since receiving Lady Lotheed's invitation. The Exaltation Gala provided so many opportunities.

***

Marcus Beto is the disavowed bastard son of a member of the Ulfen guard, a chef of some renown throughout Oppara, and a bit crazy. His extraordinary height and red hair are the only features that betray his Ulfen heritage, though he keeps his hair short and his face cleanly shaven. Marcus has been cooking for nobles in Oppara for most of his life, starting as an apprentice at the age of eight. He’s seen both sides of life in Taldor—the extravagant life of the nobility, and the gritty, challenging existence led by the poor in Oppara, a social class to which both he and his mother belong. This unique perspective has convinced Marcus that Taldor needs a change, and that he should be a part of that change—he just isn’t sure how far he’s willing to go to see his desires come to fruition.

Motivation:
While his interest in Taldan politics is covered in the background section, Marcus has much to offer to any who would recruit him. He would serve most ably as a spy of some sort, making use of his stealth, ability to pick locks, and strengths in disguise and deception. He has also spent a lot of time around the nobles of Taldor, and knows quite a bit about who they are and what makes them tick.

Rollplay/Roleplay:
Marcus is good with a bow, and even better when he has a chance to stalk and sneak up on a target. He can serve as a reliable scout, spy, or thief, and can hold his own in social situations (though usually through deception and disguise). He knows a lot about the Taldan nobles, and about the goings-on in Oppara and throughout Taldor, and is a keen observer of everything going on around him.

Progression:
Marcus is built as a slayer with the Sniper and Stygian Slayer archetypes, and likely won’t deviate from that class. I plan on building him to be a master of the bow, and particularly deadly when fighting from the shadows.
