Background:
Marco felt the presence of the spirits ever since he was a child: their whispers, their callings, the echoes of lives long past. It was no blessing - it was a suffocation, as their cries stifled his ears with their noise. Such torment began to manifest itself upon Marco, as he refused to eat, could not sleep, and frequently sat alone. His parents turned to the Church of Iomedae, begging the clerics to somehow cast out the evil that had possessed their son. Bringing Marco into the church, they managed to succeed, repressing the influence of the dead upon him. But it was a temporary reprieve - the spell would only last some time. Marco would have o learn how to perform the task of casting the spirits from his thoughts himself. Thus began a long apprenticeship under the wing of the Church, in which Marco struggled to keep the spirits from his head. A cleric suggested a method of changing his focus from the spirits to something else: a hobby, or pastime, that would put his focus less on the voices and instead on the task. Marco agreed half-heartedly, only eager to find some method of finding silence. Marco began to learn the measures of swordplay and combat, joining other trainees in the acts of Iomedae. The results were not as expected. But they were effective. Marco no longer felt the presence of multiple voices, instead, it was a singular entity that spoke with authority. At first, it demanded control, to which Marco refused. To his surprise, it was simple: the voices were much more difficult to quell, the solitary voice was no threat. The spirit continued to contest, but as the effort became
Marco continued his practice of spirit channeling, telling the clerics it was an improvement to his psyche. They were suspicious, but decided that if Marco was indeed cured, it was for the best. Marco began to grow more adventurous, testing new spirits daily and enjoying the skills they brought him. He never gave up swordplay, seeing it as both a thesis to his worship of Iomedae and a tradition to the first spirit he held. As Marco entered adulthood, he joined the ranks of paladins of Iomedae, using his control of spirits as a boon to his study. He looked forward to the day of Armasse - the spirits grow much more joyous during the time, for event the dead enjoy a festival. But joy was not in the cards this time...
Backstory Steps:
1: (If you need a TLDR of the spoiler above) Marco was able to feel the presence of spirits at a young age, which quickly had a negative effect on him. The church of Iomedae came to his aid, assisting him in learning to resist the spirit’s influence. Marco turned to swordplay in order to do so, and inadvertently channeled a spirit, which in turn gave him control over it. Experimenting with his power, Marco became a true paladin, assisted by the spirits of the past. 2: Marco seeks to establish justice and peace where he can - and through his relationship with non-good spirits, recognizes redemption and seeks it for those who turn from the path of light. I would like to see Marco realize his connection to the spiritual world is just as important as the physical one - and that one does not have more relevance than another. 3: Marco does keep one secret, one he never shared with the Church. The first spirit Marco channeled was Denitch Redgrid, a deserter of the First Crusader, and was written in history as a traitor. It is from his experience with him Marco gets his feeling of redemption, as he feels if the spirits, in their grief, can find the path to good in the end, all creatures that roam the Material Plane can. Unbeknownst to him, the spirit has not yet passed - it roams still, seeking forgiveness for its crimes. 4: Darl Ongrew: Of Marco’s parents, only his father is still alive. His mother passed away from disease in a cold winter. Darl and Marco don’t feel connected as family, as Marco was raised under the Church, but Marco does find console in him. Darl is more than happy to give it, but usually warns Marco he doesn’t know much more than anyone else in the world. He serves as a simple shopkeep, selling leather goods. Yul Vustri: An elven cleric of Iomedae, Yul was the one Marco most knew as a child, as she was mostly responsible for the younglings. Strict but warm hearted, she often gave Marco advice on his future considering his condition. She still treats Marco as a child, much to his ire. Bilkon Dulgal: An older dwarf, Bilkon never respected Marco - and upon learning of his ability to channel spirits, began to put him under suspicion. Though they worship the same god, the two are always at ends, a stark difference in ideology on how one should act and serve The Inheritor. Bilkon, being more stable in thought and the elder, usually wins such arguments, but Marco never acknowledges it as such.
Marco frequently imagines himself as someone else - sometimes an imaginary person, other times someone close by. He thinks it helps him commune with spirits, acting more similar to them. Marco has a habit of snapping his fingers: when walking, talking, or when he realizes something.
Appearance and Personality:
Marco carries blondish hair and a curt smile, his armor bearing the symbol of Iomedae. When he speaks, he does so quickly, usually in good spirits. He prefers not to wear anything that obscures him or his garb, practically demanding his notice. Marco is talkative, if a bit loose-lipped, but always means well. He tends to be a bit naive and unable to read the mood, and as such, plays the fool to hide his fault. He enjoys waxing poetic, and tries to keep up with recent culture and trends. When others in trouble, he is quick to lend a hand, but tends to give a man a fish rather than teach him how. |
