Who I Am:
Varisian by birth, Galtan by migration, Mivoni by...necessity. It was a common enough story: boy meets girl, boy tells girl he loves her, heartbroken girl turns boy over to bloody revolutionary mob to get revenge.

The D'Anjous:
Marcel's father and mother were typical of the Varisian peoples: wandering folk who moved about, entertaining - and fleecing - the locals wherever they stopped. Some stops lasted for days, some hours, just depending on how quickly the locals got wise to their schemes. As a young lad, Marcel was a natural...acquisition specialist. Slight of build, nimble, with quick fingers and even quicker feet.

The trouble started when the Szcarni came looking for their cut. Marcel's father had made the D'Anjou family enterprise into a large and branching operation. He thought he was strong enough to face down the Szcarni. He was wrong.

Several dead relatives and a months-long flight to Galt later, the D'Anjous were a broken clan. In his father's mind, the unrest in Galt would make a perfect cover for the family 'business'. Without a tough central authority, he reasoned, they could grow fat on the chaos. It worked, mostly, and the D'Anjous grew somewhat wealthy again.

On My Own:
Then Marcel met Celeste. Fiery red hair, green eyes to die for, and the way she moved...it was more than a red-blooded young Varisian could expect to bear. So Marcel did what he did best: he lied. In fairness, he did have feelings for the young woman, it's just that relationships among young Varisians were often like flash fires: they burned furiously and were over quickly. It simply did not occur to Marcel that she would fall in love with him.

When word came that the mob was on it's way to their camp, looking for him, Marcel's father gave him and handful of coins and wished him luck. He would not sacrifice the new family business for any reason, even his only son. The D'Anjou family patron's reaction wasn't unexpected, so Marcel said his goodbyes and headed out as fast as his horse could carry him.

He found himself in Mivon, in the River Kingdoms. The reasonable stability of the small kingdom appealed to him after the chaos of Galt. He was further intrigued by the Aldori fighting style. The cuts and thrusts of the swordlords, the feints and deceptions of the duel, appealed to his Varisian heritage. What he couldn't stand was the rigid structure of advancement. In Marcel's mind, the List of Suitors was foolish. Why tell your rival you were coming? Needless to say, Marcel didn't advance very quickly, or at all. Unfortunately in Mivon, your rank on the List was your status and wealth. Without the rank, you were nobody. Marcel was known to be one of the most skilled duelists, but without a rank on the List, he was ignored.

When an opportunity came to explore the Stolen Lands to the north, he jumped at it.
