Background:
Maraben was born in Sargava, the son of two Chelaxian merchants. Although his parents appeared to be human, their infernal heritage showed through strongly in Maraben. The family kept him hidden, ashamed and afraid of the reaction of others.

At the age of nine, Maraben fled his lonely captivity and headed into the Mwangi expanse, where he learned the mysteries of Alchemy, Deep in the steaming jungles of the interior, he came upon an ancient Shory temple. Inside, he found a strange pyramidal artifact that spoke into his mind, expanding his perception and knowledge tenfold. The amazing knowledge that poured into him drove him temporarily mad.

A year later, the strange tiefling staggered out of the jungle and arrived at Port Peril with a thirst for all kinds of knowledge. He learned to build ships and used his shipwright earnings to fund his studies of a fast, light form of combat.

He has since worked as a pirate, a guard, a sage and a shipbuilder.

Personality:
Maraben hates slavery and hates Cheliax. He distrusts any government and sees laws as arbitrary restrictions. He is neither good nor evil, more interested in acquiring treasure, knowledge and new experiences.

He is a wonderful, loyal friend to the few people he trusts, but a scoundrel and thief to just about everyone else.
