I made this character for a Hell's Angels attempt that died pretty fast. He just needs some minor tweaks to match your creation and maybe would benefit from a roll:

4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 3) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 5) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 5) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 3) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 5) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 6) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 5, 3) = 16

Stats: 13, 9, 12, 14, 16, 13 => 22 point buy, so I'll take it and adjust Malph this evening.

Edit: By died pretty fast, I meant the DM stopped posting. Not that the character died quick. :P

That would definitely be ideal, but it's hard to say how far we'll get with this pace. Let's see what other people think.

We all have the scenario books, right? Maybe we can do something like rotating the players through GM-ing. It might be slow while we learn how to do it well, but I think it won't be this bad. My impression is that Alyksandrei would prefer to be a player anyway.

Malph dashes out of the shadows up behind the rats attacking his new friends. Well, I'm glad someone came after me, he thought. He stabs at a rat with the oversized dagger in his hand.

Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 18 +2 if successful flanking
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Sneak: 1d6 ⇒ 6 if successful flanking

I take a 10 on that to ensure a safe fall (+2 from Dexterity only).

Hearing the laughter, Malph draws out the silver dagger. Spooks, here I come, he thinks to himself. Malph hesitates to venture farther into the darkness without light, but he doesn't want to negate his stealthy entrance.

As he debates with himself, Matsudaira approaches the trapdoor with the sunrod. Malph pushes as far forward into the receding darkness as he can, while sticking to the less deep shadows.

Male Gnome (Gift of Tongues Racial Traits) Rogue (rake, favored) 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15 | T 13 | FF 13 | CMD 11 | Fort +2 | Ref +4 | Will -1 (+1 for Illusions) | Init +2 | Perc +5

As Malph hears the others talking about recent spoils (to his ears), he suddenly stops calling to the others. Maybe he should take a look in the trapdoor first, he thought. Spoils might be on just the other side.

Though usually hesitant to put himself at personal risk, curiosity was starting to get the better of him. I can come back to get these guys after I clear out some things, the little gnome thought.

Malph returns again to the trapdoor and slowly opens it, watching for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Assuming nothing jumps out at him, he slips in as stealthily as possible.

Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

Do I see anything near the door?

Haha, oh. I didn't realize that.

Having knocked a hole in the wall, Malph exits the stable and circles around the building. He knocks on the now shut door and tries to pull it open.

Does it move?

"Hello in there, I have found another door!"

Male Gnome (Gift of Tongues Racial Traits) Rogue (rake, favored) 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15 | T 13 | FF 13 | CMD 11 | Fort +2 | Ref +4 | Will -1 (+1 for Illusions) | Init +2 | Perc +5

"Oh, that was easier than I thought."

Malph carefully knocks the wall over a few bricks at a time, watching for bricks falling from above to avoid getting hit. After he clears a hole big enough for everyone else, he returns to the party.

"Hi everyone, I found a trapdoor, but I'm not terribly keen on entering alone. Anything on the other side probably heard me already. Anyone else want to come? It's just past this archway I just constructed."

Malph points to the broken wall as one last loose brick falls into the debris pile.

Malph flinches at the banging and noises caused by the other explorers. He returns to the others after watching the trapdoor for a period of time to see if anything comes out.

In a low voice, "There's a trapdoor behind the grating. The wall looks like it's about to fall over here." Malph pats the wall through which lies the end of the hallway. "A solid push from one of you bigger fellows should knock a hole for you to get through. If anyone else is interested, I can keep a lookout from the other side of the room while you all try this way in."

While everyone else looks at the other doors and loudly talks about giving up, Malph sneaks through the grating and tries to stealthily pull back and peak through the door he spotted through the grating.

Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

This risk better be worth it, Malph thought to himself. All alone on this side of the grating with no gold promised. What am I thinking?

"Is anyone able to tend to Viviana and Matusdaira's bites? Those puppies sure packed a punch."

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Malph focuses on the grate.

Disable Device: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Retry until taking a 20, if possible.

But I'm going to assume that failed. Correct me if I'm wrong.

"These spooky locks are making my skills kind of useless... Oh. I wonder if this would help."

Malph pulls out a vial of acid and uncorks it. A steady hand drips a few drops into the keyhole. Returning the cork and vial to their original location, Malph walks over the the dead dogs and breaks off a long tooth. After waiting a little longer for the acid, he jams the tooth in and out of the lock, trying to break any pins.

"This lock is a little too fresh for an unused stable."

Can Malph see past the grating at all with his low light vision? If not, he beckons Matsudaira closer. How far down does the passageway go?

If I can see up to a corner:
Malph quietly squeezes through the grate to sneak up to peak around the corner. Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

Otherwise:
[b]"Well, I can't really see down there, and I wasn't paid enough to wander alone through the dark. Rabid dogs are not my specialty."

Should we post for round 2?

Malph continues to sneak around the edge of battle, poking in at the nearest distracted dog.

Since he's separated from the group, Malph moves in to flank whichever dog he is closest to. He pokes at the dog from behind with his short sword.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Damage: 1d4 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + (6) = 9 Short sword + sneak attack for flanking

Seeing the young barbarian and Slyph slip through and hearing no cries of distress, Malph slips through after them.

Malph then hides himself in the shadows out of the crack's light.

With low-light vision, he should still be able to identify a safe place reasonably far from the crack.

Malph follows the party around once they all arrive, staying just out of the light from the sunrod handed off to Matsudaira.

Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

Malph peers through the gap in the door but has no interest in being first.

"Well the the lock is tight, but the door isn't. I can probably slip through, but can't see much. Since we split the reward, I'm certainly not going in alone. Is anyone else as slim and fit as me and able to slip through?"

Malph turns with a wink. Then he grins at Gilen.

"You look eager to smash a hole in case no one fits."

Then Malph sees Matsudaira's awkward pose and remembers the fumbled sunrod under the monk's cloak. Malph points at the dim light showing through.

"Or we can throw that in and take a glance first. I wouldn't want to go in either way if there's a spook waiting right there." Knock, knock Malph goes on the door.

Malph then grabs and rattles the chain on the door.

"I think this will keep us from being terribly sneaky either way if we try to squeeze past."

Malph continues to ramble, slightly embarrassed that the lock stumped him. Suddenly, he stops with his jaw open. "Oh wait, you!" He thrusts a finger at Alassa. "You're not human, are you? What can you see through this crack?"

Slyphs appear to have Darkvision, if I'm reading your character sheet correctly, Alassa ;-)

"Why do you look at me when you say that?" Malph winks and tries to sneakily insert his thief's tools into the lock. He doesn't want to show all of his tricks to the party just yet.

Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

"Oops," Malph drops his thieves tools and they scatter around in front of everyone. When he flails to catch the falling lock picks a sunrod falls out of his pack and ignites when it hits the ground.

"Here, hold this." A disgruntled Malph thrusts the now glowing rod to Matsudaira. "We'll probably need it inside anyway."

After finally collecting his tools, Malph gives another attempt at the door. Now that everyone has seen his secrets, Malph takes his time.

Disable Device (take a 10): 10 + 6 = 16
or take a 20, if possible

If failed:

"Hmm, this place is clearly very haunted. Magic locks or something throwing my things around and staying locked... You might as well just kick the door down."

If passed:

"Easy peasy, I believe they say." Malph grins and pushes the door open, motioning for everyone else to lead the way.

On the way to the stables, Malph awkwardly swings around his new dagger. "A little unwieldy, but the silver will be good for spooks," he concludes. Then he spends his time comparing the dagger to the signet ring. "I wonder if dagger will also get me some noble friends," he wonders. Eventually, he tucks the dagger out of the way.

Male Gnome (Gift of Tongues Racial Traits) Rogue (rake, favored) 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15 | T 13 | FF 13 | CMD 11 | Fort +2 | Ref +4 | Will -1 (+1 for Illusions) | Init +2 | Perc +5

Catching no one else’s eye, Malph instead slips the dagger under his cloak. ”I guess I can figure out how to use this,” he mutters.

He holds up the ring again. A little louder he says, ”If we’re really interested in organizing a rebellion, this should be quite valuable indeed. I certainly would like to make noble friends.” With a wide grin, he slips the ring onto his small thumb. ”I can keep it safe for now, but if anyone else needs it to sneak into new circles, I can perhaps loan it.”

Is everyone really okay with that? I feel a little bad taking both. (Though it is keeping with the character, I suppose.) Let me know if you want one of the items.

GM, should I take a penalty if I use the medium(?) dagger as a small short sword, or can I assume it’s delicate/finely crafted enough for Malph to use?

Alternatively to what I posted, if no one else wants the dagger, would I be able to use it as a small short sword?

Hey GM, if it's cool with you, after we sort out the gold, I would like to pick up some Alchemist's Fire on the way to the stables.

Malph eyes the dagger that I'm assuming is a little oversized for him. He pushes it towards one of the melee fighters that seems most interested.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

"It may not look like much, but it will help more than you'd expect against ghosts. I like daggers myself, but this is a little big for me." Feel free to subconsciously claim it.

He picks up the ring, and faces the signet at Rexus.

"Where will this signet get me? I have no idea what this symbol is. If you cannot convince me that the signet itself is more valuable than the ring, then I will only work for a solid chunk of the gold."

"Pieces of magic are valuable indeed. If you want those bracers, you should take the most risky role and lead the way into the stables. If there are truly ghosts, they'll ignore any 'bulky' armor anyway."

Are the reward items sitting on the table in front of us?

"Whoa oh ho! What is this bit about an offered reward? Do you just want us to find your mother's things?... But why do you need heroes to crawl around some stables?"

Malph squinted at Rexus.

"Was she not a little more specific about her research?"

Male Gnome (Gift of Tongues Racial Traits) Rogue (rake, favored) 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15 | T 13 | FF 13 | CMD 11 | Fort +2 | Ref +4 | Will -1 (+1 for Illusions) | Init +2 | Perc +5

"Okay then, Rexus." He extends his hand. "I will agree to work with you. However, since there are no specifics, I will also be non-specific. I will say this though. If your funds do not appear worth the risk to me, I will be, let's say, less risky."

Malph gives a small shrug. "However, I don't demand to be comfortable." He waits for the shake.

Malph speaks up from behind the more passionate protesters.

"I trust that you didn't lose all of your coin in that fire. I think I have talents and street smarts that you brutes could use. However, I don't work for cheap. Especially not when the guards would disapprove of my work."

Oh shoot. Combat? I should have said this earlier, but I'm in Amsterdam until Monday. Feel free to take over my character until Monday, GM. Sorry about this. I'll try to check in if I can get decent Wi-Fi again.

Malph watches with interest from around the corner, trying to not attract the guards' attention.

Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

While keeping an eye on the group of dangerously equipped lingerers, he also scans the ground for dropped valuables.

Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Malph glances at his small wrists and imagines being hung my them. He turns to a man beside him. "I hope you're not a captain."

The bolt of lightning from the front of the crowd suddenly catches his attention. He finally starts to notice the restlessness of the crowd. Some activity is good for sneaking, but too much is unhealthy for his small frame.

Malph tries to make it out of the crowd so he can watch from a short distance. There's a good chance he can find some dropped items or bodies when this is all over.

I really didn't want to read the AP, but I went ahead since I also don't want to be confused by the rules (as a new Pathfinder player). But yeah, it just gives a modifier, which is entirely within the Core Rulebook.

Hi Alyksandrei, can you address this? I have no problem with being caught, and I will play along in this case. I just want to make sure we have a common understanding of how pick-pocketing works. It's going to be a very important aspect of my character if I'm going to roleplay a career thief.

Malph, generally apathetic about the tension in the crowd does little to help the matter. Making eye contact with his mark, he holds up both hands as he backs away. This serves two purposes. First, he hopes to demonstrate that he not succeeded in taking anything. Second, Malph wants to make sure the man sees the daggers that were hidden under his cloak.

With his most charming smile, he disappears into the crowd, watching to see if the man follows.

This might be relevant, but I'm in France at the moment. (I'll be back in the US in a few weeks, I think.) I'm usually sound asleep during the American evening, which might be the most common posting time for you guys. Don't worry about me.

"Oh no, I'm fine." Malph says dusting himself off. The crowd's sudden movement caused him to bump into the monk a little harder than he had planned. No attempt at Matsudaira's purse could be made. "Unfortunately" Malph thought to himself.

This day was not being too successful so far, and now there was a human looking straight down at him. "Don't worry about me. This is what I get for sneaking to the front."

With that Malph disappears forward into the crowd. "Now that they're getting excited, they should be less concerned for their valuables."

When out of Matsudaira's view, Malph attempts to pickpocket one of the more distracted and well-dressed protesters.

Malph wandered onto the scene, bumping into a rather wealthy looking woman immediately. With the pass of his hands as he "caught" her, he found no exposed valuables. He flashed his most charming smile at her after separating. "Terribly sorry! I'm far too distracted today."

This much was true. His ultimate goal was to profit off the distant crowd gathering for the upcoming protest. The streets were relatively empty on this block, so Malph didn't want to make a serious attempt at finding a purse. However, it would have been difficult for him to completely pass up this chance.

Since we haven't really started the game, I'm going to assume no rolls, gaining, or losing anything for now.

Bowing apologetically, Malph continued on towards the crowd. The woman, finding nothing missing, let him go. "The guards nearby don't look too concerned about me," Malph thought to himself. For the most part they were concentrating on the crowd. "As long as they don't look down during the protest, I should be fine."

Hello everyone. This is my character Malph. My name is Dan, and my experience with RPGs is limited to some D&D v3.5 when I was younger (early high school) and video games. I'm completely new to Pathfinder (basically only jumping in due to the Humble Bundle), so I'm still learning the similarities and differences between v3.5 and Pathfinder.

Here's the backstory of Malph:

Backstory:

Attracted by the amount of people and wealth the city had to offer, Malph moved to Kintargo as a young Gnome. However, he arrived unfocused, not knowing what path to pursue. He could hardly be taken seriously as a warrior among men, and he was not studious enough to pursue the arcane arts (walking away with only a few cantrips and some alchemy experience). Eventually, he became absolutely enamored by the performances of Shensen, but had no voice for singing.

After a few short years of performing odd jobs, he was at quite a loss for money and what to do with himself.

He had achieved something useful in that time though. Frequenting the local taverns and being a generally likable fellow, he had made more than a few friends. One of these friends took him aside.

"You came to Kintargo at a bad time. It's particularly difficult to make an honest living unless you know someone important in this city."

Malph didn't care too much about politics at the time, but listened carefully to his acquaintance.

"If you are willing though, I can teach you how to live off some of the city's fat."

And so Malph learned from his sly friend how to slip by unseen (or flash a smile if caught) and how to make off with a few coins or trinkets that were unattended.

When word of the upcoming protest came up, Malph knew there would be plenty of unattended purses at eye level in the crowd of people... (Looking for trouble)

Malph is not a native of Kintargo, but moved there since he was interested in the opportunities of such a large city.

He might know Alassa in passing since he spent some time as well at various odd jobs.

However, he is very much out for himself at the moment. He came in with naive dreams about what the big city would be like, but had to resort to less than admirable means to make a living. He is generally considered likable by the thieves that taught him his trade, but they thought him too young and innocent to let him join a guild. He is very confident (though a better word might be cocky), but unfocused in his pursuits.

Now in the words of Malph:

"I came to Kintargo when I was quite young, knowing that I had the ability to make it big here. I'm very good at many things, but you really have to know the right people to get paid to do anything. Instead, I met much more clever people. They always know where you can 'borrow' some spare coins that won't be missed. I mean, the wealthy of this city definitely have more than they need. But, as I was saying, if I can get myself some coins so easily, I can spend much more time mastering my other interests, such as alchemy." Malph would then wave around a mysterious vial.

I'll have the profile header updated soon.

Sounds good! I guess whichever GM gets Group 1, feel free to check out this profile. Let me know if I have anything off or if you want something formatted differently.

Awesome! I also had a question about picking a character's languages, though this might be more up to the discretion of whichever GM I might end up with. It comes in three parts:

1) For the Gnome racial variation of Gift of Tongues, can I pick any language, not just the racial languages? Since it need ranks in Linguistics, I was thinking that it's more of a studying thing than a growing up sort of acquisition.

2) I picked Infernal for that particular language because it was recommended in the Player's Guide as being a language used by the enemy. Is that too much meta-gaming? I have no problem changing it.

3) For the Cosmopolitian feat, I can pick two more languages to know. I picked ones that I figured would be heard around the shadier parts of Kintargo. Are those Strix and Shadowtongue, or are there other languages that would be more characteristic of the city? Also, the racial languages bit applies to this question.

Thanks.

Hello, I would be interested in applying for this game or any others that are run by a separate GM. I played v3.5 many years ago, but can see that there has been a decent number of changes (such as the skill system). Let me know if I should fix something. (For example, does the +1 skill point for favored class apply to 1st level?) I might also make a couple minor changes after I thoroughly read the Player's Guide for the campaign.
